Host or join a network gaming session. Rediscover the joy of multiplayer games using RetroArch's builtin netplay lobby. You can also use the spectator mode to watch others play. Click the Lobby Browser button now to view Netplay Hosts! Don't forget to check out our Netplay document page!
Netplay
RetroArch enables you to play games online. You can challenge players around the world and compete on classic games like Mario Kart, Bomberman, Street Fighter, or team up on games like Streets of Rage or Sonic 3.
RetroArch relies on peer-to-peer networking to reduce network latency and ensure the best possible experience.
The lobby
The most convenient way to try netplay is to use the lobby inside the menu.
You need an active internet connection and a router that supports UPnP port forwarding.
You will also need to own the same ROM as your partner and have it scanned and in your playlists. We recommend ROMs from the No-Intro sets.
To join a netplay room in the lobby, just refresh the room list and press A on a room entry.
To host your own netplay session, press A on Start netplay host and a room will be created and announced publicly.
This lobby will also work for local rooms (on your home local network).
Manual netplay
Advanced users have the possibility to setup netplay manually.
The Network Settings enables you to tweak how the network code will behave when you are acting as Server.
If you don't need NAT traversal, it can be disabled in the settings.
When you are acting as client, most of these settings will have no effect. The only things you will have to set will be the Server IP.
After you have configured netplay as you wish, launch a game and use:
Start netplay host to act as server
Connect to netplay host to act as client

Nice video. Just a point to make, the relay server adds a lot of compatibility but also lags up the game. The best thing is for the host to port forward (can find/set port number in advanced network settings) or ensure UPNP is on.
That's a fantastic point. I'll look into that for sure as I did notice a tiny bit of lag and stutter. Thanks for the tip Ninja!
@@RetroCrisis no worries my bro. I'm actually kinda free today, so if you wanna try some multiplayer. I can play.
@@PixelCherryNinja later in the evening I'll be free if you're around?
@@RetroCrisis shout Mr when you are, if I am, we'll collaborate
Could you, if at all possible, inform us how to port forward/turn UPNP on? Is it set within RetroArch or outside it? Thanks. :)
Nice! Playing with my mate now!
Don't forget to match your versions and cores
This is the best retrogaming channel by far.
Wow thank you so much !!
I’ve been thinking about playing Super Smash Bros. for N64 through netplay. If I have the time, I would love to go back to playing some online matches with people from all over the world.
Nice work Duke
Respect 💯
U r keeping the retro culture alive
Does netplay works with ALL emulators? or just a few?
You didn't mention it but I assume client needs to have the same rom and emulator/core too, right?
According to the website, yes.
Question. How to fix failed to initialize netplay can you pls do tutor
Hi! I just wanted to ask how to solve a netplay issue im having right now, it assigns my IP adress and my port succesfully, but then it says "Your room is not connectable from the internet" I tried setting firewall on windows and my Wi-Fi device but didn't work anyways.
When i want to start the host and join in to a game, it says that my game cant joined by the Internet. Can anyone help me?
Do you have to be on the same wifi or can I plsy a buddy who lives a few states over?
I'm also asking myself the same question.
I've been searching the net for an hour now
idk why i getting this error Port Mapping Failed my router and all stuff is okay im actually playing sega genesis games via netplay but this one doesnt work :(
Great tutorial it's very helpful and easy to understand
Thank you - I hope you have fun playing online!
This is cool but is there like hub where you can go to see all hosted games being played?
Retroarch psx using zero tier vpn or another vpn does it work to play online with a friend?
Do games need tonhave ye exact same name in both devices? Do this only work on local network?
Best to have identical ROMs. Works over the internet too
@@RetroCrisis thanks
Does retroarch support only 2 players online??? Or can it be more??? I already know that locally you can do 4 players on the same device with 4 bluetooth controllers.
How to play multiplayer n64 with pokemon stadium or super smash brawl?
Only certain cores are supported. Look it up for detailed info
@@XCVIIXCVII thanks where are the details?
@@ghyslainofranc5174 literally where do we find that
Fucking dope. Surprised the smash community isn’t doing this
😦😦😱😱 literally a dream come true
@@trillspill9260 hell yeah!!
we got slippi dont need it
I don't think smash needs exactly this because every game has a way to connect PC players together. Smash64 has pkse64 netplay emulator. Smash melee has slippi (by FAR the coolest one, with matchmaking built in). For smash brawl/P+/PM there are versions of dolphin emulator for net play. And for ultimate I think there is a switch emulator that will connect, but I know people do it through parsec and just remote into the other person's computer.
Honestly I think the smash games (and every old fighting game to exist) would benefit from something like slippi. Being able to just search for a match, whether it's casual or competitive, in games over 15 years old would be really cool.
That's a huge wish for games to have. But I'm fine with 0 latency smash if I have to jump through a few hurdles. Playing smash ultimate on a switch, hard wired to the internet and having all your inputs be 1 to 3 seconds behind because the other person is on their wifi makes me despise actual Nintendo products. Fans do what nintendont 😎
@@Mitchmckeeguitar Hey, really cool info. Do you know if there is something for Mario Party?
Just wondering how this works with gba , nds , 3ds and psp is it the same method or is it non compatible at the moment
It must necessarily be completely different. The Netplay you have watched here are syncing two rpis to think they are "the same machine", so to say, where one machine is actings as joystick port 1 and the other machine as joystick port 2. What you want is more of a serial link/lan/wifi connection between two independent machines running the same game, using official supported network code. No idea if you can get that to work, but you probably have to look elsewhere.
@@Evilkingus thanks for the Explanation but I already knew this already that was the point of me asking this question in the first place because it’s multiplayer from 2 or more separate systems and not the same system
I apologize but your reply was completely irrelevant to the question (except for asking if it’s the same method which I already knew that there was no way for that Method to work with those systems without even trying) at hand and didn’t help me out in the slightest at all but thanks for the response at least , better than nothing
can play between mobile/PC ?
is it like fightcade how you can play against people from all over the world?
or does it only do close by friends like in this video?
late response but its both. although for fighting games youre better off using fightcade due to rollback etc.
thank you so much this was extreamly usfull
Glad to hear it!
How to do this on steam, friend cannot control their player but I can control mine
Are these instructions the same for retroarch Android?
Is it true you cannot copy data from retro arch gaming on a windows laptop to retro arch installed on a Chromebook or tablet? If no, are there any other video gaming emulators where you can copy data and restore it in a different type of device? Is it also true you can play retro arch emulator offline as long as you saved the data while online? Same for multiplaying? Can it handle major games like Minecraft and GTA? Also install mods on some games?
does ps1 games Dreamcast or n64 games work?
Maybe even sega Saturn
Depends if the core supports it. It varies from core to core
Can I join random people games?
i guess you can
Quick question, does Netplay work with a GBA core like Mgba since I really want to play Four Swords
I've been trying to find this out aswell. Fron what I've read it seems it can't emulate the link cable functionality sadly. On pc it looks like VBALink is recommended(can't say myself, as I've never used it). If you happen to be on android like me, Multigba S seems to be the best for netplay.
nice content! anw can FTP Netplay playing multiplayer on PS1? games like Metal Slug X and others
Thank you :) As long as the PS1 core you're using supports Netplay, it should work
Is it possible to netplay NES games? Does any NES core support it?
I believe it is possible. Best thing to do is download a few cores and have a look
hey i try click two player in a game like contra and i press down and it doesnt go down it wont get to player 2 for somereason do you know how to fix it
In contra you have to press (select) button that is next to (start) button.
In some other controllers its called (Mode) button.
@@assassinv0299 thank you but a other thing I have a problem with is I try to play punch out on the will on retroarch but it says save data will be created for punch out and I can’t move anything
Is it possible to play with more than 2?
@@NullSmashLegends yes
Will this work with gba?
It's core specific. So just make sure the core you're using supports
@@RetroCrisis i did it in gba, but it still asks for the cable link :(
Why I get error failed to locate matching content." its by either CRC or matching content
The ROM needs to be valid and must be imported into your playlist
@@RetroCrisis Ok so I try to import my content but I couldnt find the file (My game is Super Mario Kart)
@@nihr18 double check you've got the correct core installed
Failed to initialize netplay…. Any help out there?
Double check the core your using supports netplay
I don’t have the update installed cores option
Are you using the steam version?
@@RetroCrisis no the recent iOS version
@@poodahhh iOS doesn't have a core updater yet
Does this work for all cores? I tried for ps2 with my friend and it says core not supported..
It's core specific. It won't work for every core sadly.
@@RetroCrisis does it work for N64?
Updating cores causes my emulators to stop working
Rapaz, tava testando e dá pra jogar Hack online. Hoje tava jogando o Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Re-Revenge e o Streets of Rage 2 - Street Fighter Heroes, ambos feitos a partir do streets of rage 2. Muito massa, a noite vou procurar alguém pra jogar.
can i put a name to my hosting ???
How do you do this with VPN?
works great
Great!
is this safe is this local host only? I just want to trade some pkmons with myself not open connections to the world
Does this work for N64 games as well?
I believe it is core specific - so it's best to check the documentation of the core you're using
Do this work for gba games
only if the core supports it
Can you play pokemon on that
Relay most of the time will not cut it this is a lame solution - you need to go through port forwarding and using a static ip for a direct (smoother / lag free) connection
You're 100% correct. I need to make an updated video
@@RetroCrisis good on ya !
Didn't work.
It takes a few attempts
What about offline
Can I do wii games
As long as the core being used supports Netplay, then it should work
What about cable link?
Great.but how my friend can join???
I’m guessing they have to be on the same network? But definitely understand that both parties need retro arch installed. Not sure if you can play against someone across the world.
I will try that on my psvita
3:00 can I go to "Refresh Netplay LAN list" if my friend made a room while he's in the same local connection than mine?
+1 Sub, thank you!
Thank you too!
N64 plz help
