One other point - we still use leaded solder in the US and to be honest it is much easier to work with than lead-free solder (it just doesn't flow as nicely and it doesn't last long term - it cracks and breaks). Definitely work with ventilation and a mask with the leaded solder. I open a window and use a fan that sucks the fumes away from me and out the window.

Interesting lead based solder is still used in the states. Regardless I always work with a mask and ventilation just to be safe. Good to know about working with it vs lead free!

@@EricMorettin Of course, commercial products that are sold in other countries now use the lead-free solder, so most amps and guitars use lead-free at the factory. But you can still buy leaded solder at stores and online and it is my default. If you watch any videos done by amp techs, they will rail about lead-free solder specifically in amps because of the heat generated in an amp. The lead-free stuff just doesn't hold up well and when they do repair work they replace the solder joints they are working on with leaded solder.

One hint on the wire...if you get silicone jacketed wire, you have less problems with the soldering iron touching the outside of the wire and burning it. The silicone is much more heat resistant and the PVC jacket has some nasty fumes when it burns.
