  • In this video we cover how to change the output jack socket of your guitar, in this case, a Stratocaster. A Switchcraft jack socket is used.
If you play regularly, at some point, you will need to replace the jack socket of your guitar. This is pretty much necessary on the majority of far eastern made models. It's very cheap to replace and worth it.
Changing the guitar's output jack is incredibly simple to do - this video shows how to do it and uses diagrams for a clear and concise tutorial.
To change the output jack of a guitar that uses braided hook up wire (ie a Les Paul for example) this video is available here - • How To Wire A Guitar J...

Awesome video! I ran into exactly the same problem on my David Gilmour Black Strat partscaster build. One moment I was all excited to finally plug it in to test the pickup selections, and the next, thoroughly disappointed when I could feel the pole pieces being activated/ magnetized (with the screwdriver-tip tap-test), but couldn’t hear any sound of the tapping through the amp. So after checking the pickguard to ensure all my solder joints were intact and correctly wires, I just unscrewed the output jack from its place, and voilà, now I could hear it. So I removed the jack cavity shielding and now I’m in Black Strat heaven. I think the small Strat jack cavity is very prone to metal/ metal contact, and like you say, I’m not sure the small chance of EMI pickup is worth the very real possibility of the sound cutting out. Your other videos on Strat wiring and the DG wiring are very helpful too. I learned a lot, considering it’s my first “build”. Thanks mate!

Cheers for this! I'm having a go at this tonight. First time I've done soldering since school back in the 80's.

Switchcraft sockets are good, as are Neutrik, but _Pure Tone_ sockets are outstanding. I've fitted them to all my guitars.

A screw to attach the jack plate (some are football shaped and curved) may be long enough to penetrate the 'hot' wire to the jack and no sound at all is transmitted. A shorter screw is needed. It seldom happens, but I saw it once on a Cort G200 and shorter screws (2) were an easy answer.

Just put a bit of electrical tape over the shielding where the jack is making contact

I got a question for you. I 'm installing an input jack in a new build (strat) and ordered some wire. I received shielded 2 conductor cable. So i know how to wire the two leads (thanks to your excellent vid on this), but what should i do with the shield. Should i just ignore it, solder it to the volume pot along with the grounds on one end, and the other end to the copper shield in the control cavity, or should i just get new cable such as 1 conductor, 1 shield? Appreciate any help,.

Hey man, I had a question. Im modding a squier tele for a friend, changed out the pups and rewired for a 4 way system. I was wondering if itd be a good idea to add a dummy coil or just shield the thing, and i was leaning more towards the coil because its not hard to make one, but I was wondering how to wire it, and if you had any guesses to help?

Hey man, can honestly say I've never used/installed a dummy coil. This link seems to have all the info you need though! www.frettech.com/frettech/dummy/index.html

yeah we used to all the time before bothering to invest in a hot air gun. Just don't burn it.
