    Have been using the Webber roasting rack for a years. Use 2 layers of standard aluminium foil with a few slots cut into it to drain fat instead of the Webber shields.

      I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the roasting rack. Because of having to import it, it was still expensive for what it was but not completely outrageous like the Weber shields. Once I use up the rest of the shields in this pack I purchased I'll go back to using aluminum foil.

      Yes same. I bought the shields once thinking it was reusable. Once the pack of ten run out I reverted to alfoil.

      I found aluminum take out lids at Sam’s club. A pack of 50 is about the same price as 4 of these. I punch holes in them with a punch.

    The DIY version has been working so well that I see no reason to get the "official" versions at all. Thanks Jerry!

    I have the rack and the shields and I used the shield as a template to make a permanent one out of a same size cookie sheet.

    Wal-Mart sells an "Expert Grill Barbecue Grill Topper" its dimensions are 13.2x9.2 for $2. I am going to try this out and see how well it works for indirect cooking. Its similar to a grilling basket so it would let a lot of heat through.
    Another option would be 1/4 Sheet Cake Sets. Some of them are sold with a cooling rack. These sets are also 9x13 and with a little modification would make an excellent reusable roasting set.

      So I am not sure the grill topper would work for indirect. I think those are intended for people to try to keep their grates clean… but the baking rack idea could work

    I have a Q1000 and a Q3200, being from New Zealand, I have the "Official Roasting Racks" (here they are called a Trivet) for both and have been using them for years - the quality is great !!
    I do not like the disposable shields, I bought an aluminum biscuit/cookie baking tray, it is just a flat piece of aluminum for oven use, I placed a disposable shield that came with the BBQ when I bought it on top of it, marked the shape, slots and holes and made my own re-usable shields for both BBQ's, which works amazingly well !!
    Keep the vids coming !
    Regards
    F

    They sell these shields locally here in New Zealand, but I don't get them for my Q. I don't know anyone else who buys the shields either.
    I just use double layer foil with the genuine roasting rack, cut my own holes in the foil.

      Great to hear from you Aussies and Kiwis who have these readily available. It's interesting to see that it seems like nobody bothers buying the shields but do use the genuine roasting rack. Thanks for commenting and watching!

    G'day Gerry, yep, another Aussie here, before the roasting trays were introduced here some years ago, we just used doubled over foil which i think is easier to dispose of, and depending on what i cook, if I use the foil trays, I may actually get 2 or 3 uses out of them, after all they are only a tray to help with indirect heat....i use them and especially when cooking pizzas, I put the foil sheet on the grill, the roasting rack (trivet) on top then the weber Pizza stone on top of that and preheat on high. Perhaps Weber didn't introduce the roasting rack to the USA as roasting is not something you guys do a lot compared to markets like Australia, New Zealand and the UK. where it's very much a tradition. The USA is Mostly about low n slow BBQ, or Hot n fast grillin'.

    Cool vid. Very interesting and informative. Def gonna stick with the diy method. But this did give me an idea… the “dollar” store has those heavy duty aluminum pans in different sizes and ima try to fabricate the shields outta the bottoms or one similar in size, just to see how that turns out.
    Solid editing by the way. Video was fun to watch.
    FYI we use yr videos all the time to cook dinners around here.

      Thanks for watching. The only bad thing I can think of about a more permanent roasting shield set up like you suggest, is that cleaning it would be a huge pain in the arse.... the simple throwaway shields or foil can get pretty nasty after each use depending on what you're making.

    • @OnlyOneG10
      @OnlyOneG10 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ChicagoGriller Lol no no , not for a permanent one just a temp one like the weber ones . .. those “pans” are like the kind someone would keep stuff warm in at a picnic or something. They are made of a thicker foil equivalent to what those weber ones are made of. Only $1.25 and pretty easy to make into something almost identical to the Weber heat shield with some scissors.
      But it’s also pretty convenient just to use the heavy duty foil roll in the kitchen cabinet. 😂

    Yep! The Weber shields are a waste of money. The rack is pretty quality but since its not available in the US I would not seek it out. I found myself a great, sturdy little rack from a roasting pan that has held up over time. Aluminum foil is readily available so I use it. I always cook like this on the Q for all my chicken legs, wings and tri tips! Its perfect!
    Thanks for another great video!

      The markup I paid for the rack wasn't too bad. But the shields cost me over $5 each which is a crazy price to pay for what it is. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for this, I suspected the official tray was a bit of a rip-off! They're outrageously expensive here in New Zealand. Would love to know the width and length of the official tray. Am about to purchase my first Weber, a 1200N (the 2023 Baby Q), so I want to find an OK-quality roasting tray that'll fit.

    A small point maybe, but those pre-cast holes are designed to drip fats and oils without touching the grill grates (according to Weber Australia). Worth the cost to save on cleaning in my view.

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it did mention the location of the holes on the back of the packaging. As you said, perhaps a minor point to save on some cleaning time.

    Very strange to me that these aren't sold in the US. I wonder why... I use the roasting trivet with aluminium foil the same way you do, personally I think the roasting shields aren't worth it.

    wow that roasting pack is like 3 yrs old. Dont understand why you can get these in USA and only here in Australia and UK. Never understood why we get way more weber q accessories here in Australia, compared to the USA.

    I am using the roasting rack only every once in a while so I don't really care about the extra buck because I think they are still affordable ... and besides that: It is kind of a lifestyle item I like, like using the original weber tongs and all the other weber stuff that could easily be replaced by no name products or DIY's - however: to me, it would not be the same ...
    Doesn't make sense, does it? So what 🤪😇

    • @ChicagoGriller
      @ChicagoGriller  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nothing wrong with loyalty. At the end of the day, you know what you're getting out something branded with Weber on it, regardless of the price paid.
