In the Doctor Who Magic: The Gathering decks, they reprinted the card Solemn Simulacrum in the 12th/13th Doctor focused deck. When this episode came out I remember really disliking the ending. I personally thought what they should have done is have one of the bots get killed (like what happens) and the other bots start to feel grief over the loss of one of their own. As they feel grief the Doctor explains to them that's what caused the original sadness in the humans and that this feeling is good and important and shows that you love and cared for someone else and can remember them. The bots learn that grief is normal and good and start to see what the humans see so stop killing them. Might be an awful idea but that was always my fix for it.

Not a bad idea, but normally one wouldn't expect the robots who have only recently gotten sentence to feel grief all at once, that would have taken ages (even in the "whoniverse" that would require a great deal of suspension of disbelief), could maybe be explored in a two-parter, but using that much time for such an episode in an already crowded and condensed season might have been considered a waste of time. I don't like the doctor's makeshift solution myself, that feels like too much injustice done to the unsuspecting settlers, besides, it is just another retelling of the magic haddock (or was it already in this episode that the doctor told it?) Well, that's Moffat and it is what it is, so take it or leave it, what else can we do 😁? (I don't mean Moffat wrote this episode, just that as the showrunner he had ultimate authority, and the last say over it...) Edit: I'm pretty sure magic haddock was in this episode. What I had in mind was monkey's paw, or the wishmaster. I haven't seen the latter movie, but as far as I know it explores the same theme...
Think you're too hard on the emoji thing...not only is it used even more nowadays (which you did elude to) but comment bots, automated text messages from businesses and automated emails overuse them as it cuts across language barriers. Really makes sense to have robots using them and understanding human emotions in this episode. I'd give go as far to say this was a bit forward thinking on the part of all involved.
The planet wouldn’t have been empty, it would have still had the neurodivergents who had spent decades learning to mask so perfectly that the robots would have no clue they were not happy.
Weirdly enough smile reminds me of wall e where a human colony over relies on technology and as a result the technology becomes defective even though it thinks its helping people
I think the first three episodes did a great job introducing Bill and her relationship to the Doctor, but also new viewers to the show itself. Episode 1 explains all the rules and 2 & 3 give very standard trips that set up expectations well. I even like the "Well I didn't really solve anything, so anyway you're on your own now." because that's so many episodes. The Doctor makes it clear they aren't there to solve every problem and they've been called out several times for just flying off after upending the situation. We even got consequences in series 1. 12 helped the robots gain sentience, explained the situation, and then told the people "hey, you can either get murdered trying to fight the robots or find a way to move on and coexist. Not my problem. I tried." So the first three give us a fantastic pilot to set up the rules and relationships, a second that isn't "that" deep but gives a basic exploration and puzzle solve, and a third that gives a more "save the day" story. One thing I'll also add for the emoji bots is that emoji are an interesting case for communication. They're universal (for the most part), but still leave so much unsaid in an attempt to find universal communication. Also, Missy dabbing will always be perfect because it felt crjngey and out of place even when the episode aired. I always thought that was the point. Missy just pretending (and not even really caring to pretend) to be her flanderized version of the Doctor. I hated the bit about the robots actually being alive. It’s obviously meant to bring to mind colonialism and slavery, which doesn’t fit in at all with the rest of the story being about toxic positivity and refugees trying to survive. I mean, the robots weren’t indigenous to this planet. The humans made them and brought them, right? Why couldn’t the robots have just been regular robots?? It’s usually a good story for sci fi but not when you already were exploring a different plot. But the rest of the episode was good.
Exactly. The reason they worked is because they weren’t alive. It imo portrays a much more accurate example of rogue AI. One that destroys by completing the purpose it was made for
In the end the humans were screwed. Friends and family killed and forced to pay the killers to survive. The robots won't remember it. Well that's ok then.
IMO Robots are just tools. Take out The idea they’re sentient cause tbh that makes no sense with the overarching narrative. It’s more analogous to a self driving car causing a crash. As a semi-retired cognitive scientist/linguist, I take exception to the idea that machines can't feel, though it depends on what you mean by _can't._ They do not do so now except in a few research programs. The problem is not the machine; it's the idea from Aristotle much exacerbated by Descartes that reduces cognition to Aristotelian binary logic. (Ironically, we can only do logic as humans because of cortical structures that feel.) We have known for some time how empathy works down to the level of individual neurons, more than enough to implement it in machines. Feeling is necessary for human reasoning, which is embodied and is very different from logic (it could conceivably be formally modeled as logic-logicians have made thousands of different logics-but it would be a waste if time as it would be too complex to work with; it is much easier to simulate the human nervous system. Of course, as in _2001,_ some would prefer to say _simulate,_ but as we face the same problem with other human minds and still manage well enough, this does not seem to me much of a problem. As we have not done the whole job, I cannot exclude the possibility of running into an insurmountable problem, but no such problem appears on the horizon from what we can see. Whether doing it would be good or bad is another question, albeit one that is equally relevant in an essential way. But it seems doable.

If a story contains AI - it's almost guaranteed that this AI is or will become evil. I'm really tired of this. And with almost all these stories, people find them profound and thought-provoking (like we didn't see this 9000 times before), while the reason of AI being evil is always terrible coding. I mean, emoji bots were created by humans, coded by humans, humans made them understand what makes certain people unhappy and how to fix this, but they didn't bother to clarify that "human died = sad"? Yes, emotions can be complex, but they are not supernatural or divine undescribable happening.

@@ko379 I suppose for a content creator like Harbo who needs to keep a very active social media presence, its going to beomce more of a stress for him though so i guess I understand why it annoyes him.
You and I may not lie about our lives on social media, but it is a pretty well known trend. Plenty of people do worry greatly about their social media presence to the degree that much of it ends up being artificial in many of the ways Harbo described. Of course, simply saying “we lie about our own lives by only posting happy things on social media” is overgeneralized to the point of inaccuracy if we take it literally - it doesn’t seem to fit you or I or some others I know. That said, I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to conclude he’s talking about the well recognized trend in many a social media circle, though. Like you said, especially for content creators like Harbo or even those who just put more stock into their social media “image.”

This episode was never good. It has good elements, but just doesn’t come together. It’s “The Long Game” of Series 10
9:45 we dont "lie about our own lives" by posting happy things on social media, we post the things that make us happy in order to share that with the world.
If ive been to an event im going to want to tell everyone about it, while if ive been indoors with a headache all day, im not going to make the headache post because its not interesting and i dont care to share.
Really good point. Especially if you want to use social media like a photo album to look back on later fondly. Why would you post the bad parts?
😂
I think that place in Valencia has been used in other things as a far future/sci-fi setting as well, I know they did in Westworld as the headquarters of Delos and I’ve got a feeling they did in Stars Was at some point too, and couldn’t agree more of how great it looks in this episode as well 👌🏻
This has to be the most nitpicky review this guy has ever done.

Really sad you didnt pick the obvious example for a collonialist force. Blink twice if youre trying not to get demonitized
I think emojis are over hated because they’re associated with young people, when their actually a universal form communication everyone can understand - I don’t think they date the episode at all considering they’re used just as much if not more! 😀🥹☺️😉😝🤓😏😭😖😫😡🥶😱🫡🤫🥴🤐🫠😵
