They were ready for them early the next season, though, and crushed the Chiefs at Bloomington. In the Super Bowl vs Raiders, they had a hellacious and distracting practice arrangement that Bud Grant even complained about. Spent tons of time on fatiguing bus trips to and from the practice site. They didn't have it together for the game. And, Miami just did what the Chiefs did, but less fancy - ran right at them. Vikes had a fast and quick- pursuing defense, but they DID have problems when big teams ran right at them. And, the Pittsburgh Steelers were just better than anybody in the mid-to-late 1970s.

They did their homework and the Vikings didn't. Plus the Vikings were a tad overconfident. They handily beat the Chiefs in the first game of the 1970 regular season 24-10 I believe, but they learned their lesson the hard way, losing when it really counted. KC had to wait 50 years for another SB. But they won the Big Game and that's all anyone ever remembers. Sad, because the Vikings of the late 60s to mid 70s were were such a great team with lots of Hall of Famers, mostly on defense though.

They were stacked, unfortunately, they played in what was the GREATEST ERA IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL!!! The 70's MADE NFL what it is today. Great video though a little tough to watch my Boys lose in the NFC Championship! I really wanted the Vikings to beat the Steelers!!! I was a 13 year old in 1973. Growing up in LA, I was a Rams fan and had all of the heartaches associated with the team. But I definitely remember all of the Vikings, appreciate you posting this.
Agreed That was the best 1973 post season games. I was 7 years of age and this was my first year of watching pro football. Tarkenton even praised Billy Kilmer in the post game interview. Pat Fischer got an injury that put him out of the game and Tarkenton exploited that.

Did you say amazing? Disappointing is more like it and it's compounded when 2 decades later in 1998 the 15-1 Vikings did not even get to the Superbowl.
In three of the four SBs they simply lost to better teams. The only one they had no business losing was to the Chiefs. Even without Joe Kapp, they stomped them the next season.
This was the first year I started really watching much NFL football, and it started with the playoffs and the game between the Redskins and Vikings. Minnesota became my favorite team even before this, but that weekend is the first one that I can remember watching games (at age 7) and know what was going on. That playoff game was awesome.
Carl Eller was One of the best DE ever. He gets overshadowed a bit because he played in an era with awesome linemen like deacon jones and bubba smith and claude Humphrey and a few others but that guy was a sack master for sure.
purple sword I actually went to Canton the year he made the hall of fame and saw his hall of fame speech live. Very well spoken man who definitely was one of the best pass rushers ever and one of the key pieces to one of the best defenses ever.
Jim Marshall is even more underrated. The greatest player in NFL history who isn't in the HOF yet other than maybe Cliff Branch of the Raiders. Jim Plunkett, Lester Hayes, and Tom Flores should be in the HOF too along with Steve Tasker of the Buffalo Bills

This had to be Bud Grant's best Vikings team of his career. The win over Dallas in the NFC title game kind of seals it. Dallas played in 7 of 10 NFC title games in the 70's and went 5 and 2 in them. This was their only loss at home. In fact I think it was the only time they lost one at home in their whole franchise history. Just goes to show how truly great the Dolphins were to handle them so easily in SB-7. The '73 Dolphins were better than the undefeated '72 team. The '72 team won their 3 post-season games by a collective 20 points. The '73 team won by a collective 50.
Watching football since 1969 , the Vikings had such good teams for so long , divisions , Nfc title championships, superbowls .I'm a Saints fan we got to the superbowl once and won, way it is in life and sports seems unfair

Never trust an old man’s memory. I read comments how playing outdoors in Minnesota was this huge viking advantage. Over the last 30 years of playing indoors, the Vikings have the largest difference in home wins/road wins. Yet, old men whine that their viqueens lost a huge advantage when they stopped playing their home games outdoors. I love it.

To me, Bill Brown defines the fullback - right up there with Jim Taylor and Tom Woodeshick from that era. Not a fancy runner, but dished out punishment and was tough to stop. Chuck Foreman was the best runner they'd had, at that point, IMO. He took their running game to a new level.
When Minnesota HC Bud Grrant coached for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League he insisted his players practice standing on the sidelines in a straight line holding their helmets to instill pride and discipline. Grant continued the practice in Minnesota. Minnesota's Jim Marshall thought at first it was silly but as the season went on he came to realize that this tradition had a lot of merit to it.
In those days the Vikings were a Jekyll-and-Hyde team: they'd always win their division and usually do well in the playoffs, yet would always play like a 6-8 team in the Super Bowl.

I looked this up just for that reason. They look so good here. Deep purple with those shining helmets. This game, beating the Cowboys in Dallas to go to the Superbowl may have been their finest hour. I always loved how NFL Films showcased this game. Perfect music and a stifling, dominant Vikings performance. The Vikings did have the misfortune of playing against some of the 1970s great teams. Dolphins, Steelers, Raiders and an underated Chiefs team. Everyone always talks about the Vikings defense. But their offensive line was just as good. Ed White, Mick Tingelhoff, Ron Yary, Grady Alderman. 10:45 is a great rundown of those players. Jeff Siemon and Wally Hilgenberg were top notch linebackers as well. Of all teams the Vikings moving indoors was and is one of the stupidest moves in all of sports. They took what made the Vikings special, their entire personality and flushed it all down the toilet. And then they committed the second stupidest moves in all of sports when right after the 1987 team showed such great progress they handed that progress to the Cowboys for Herschel Walker. The Cowboys then built a dynasty in the 1990s off of Vikings draft picks. And with just one of the many draft picks they got from the Vikings they drafted hall of famer Emmitt Smith. While Herschel Walker stunk up Vikings offense until disappearing three years later. They have never fully recovered except for the 1998 Vikes who went 15-1 before Gary Anderson handed the Falcons a spot in the Superbowl.
One has to wonder how a team with such a great defense in the 1970s and good offensive weaponry manages to roll over and play dead when the Super Bowls came a calling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Out-coached in SB 4 and every score in SB 9 came off a bounce or was set up off of a bounce. I know the Vikings were heavily favored in SB 4, but I think underdogs in the other three.
I agree it is not football anymore , player contact is mostly above the waist now , and check any play and nobody falls down on any given play anymore , and the ball carrier gets pushed out of bounds or falls to the ground himself , terrible and surprise no one get hurt any more (not that we want that ) whens the last time players jumped on the field and prayed on thier knees for a pulled groin ! That does happen anymore either !
And he also was qb when Vikings reached 1977 NFC title game, after Tarkenton got hurt. He also did some punting, if I remember right, in earlier stint with Vikes. His daughter is news anchor Jenna Lee.

I always liked how the Vikings wore two different purple jerseys in 1973. If you'll notice, for most of the season, they wore a uniform without any trim on the sleeves. It was simply a purple jersey with white numbers. But for the Bears game and the Redskins game, they wore their usual uniform with the stripes on the sleeves. I never knew the reason for this. But I liked it and always loved their uniform no matter which one they wore. And to my knowledge, this was the last (maybe only) season they wore that one with no stripes on the sleeves. Pretty cool.
Ahhh, always wondered why that was !! I called it the " away home jerseys". They wore it against the Cowboys in the mid season 1974 game also in the 1969 game versus the Rams....both warm weather games just to name two. In the 73 playoff game , some players are wearing both versions of the purple jersey.
After one mediocre season, the Vikings return as a NFL power, winning the NFC title after beating Washington and Dallas in the playoffs. The Super Bowl, however, was another story..

Do you mean the end of the highlight film, or the end of the added-on Super Bowl video? The 1973 Vikings yearbook video ends with "Rainbows in the Endzone". The Super Bowl video ends with "Pony Soldiers". If you check out Dave Volsky's page here on TH-cam, you'll find every piece of NFLF music you can think of, and then some.
I would buy boxed sets of these highlight films if they were available (so far only Super Bowls have been available) IF I knew I was getting these originals with the original soundtracks. These days, some idiots are always changing that to "modernize" things. GRRRRR!!!!!
You know what? I think the Vikings should go back to their classic 70s uniforms. The 49ers did it and won a Super Bowl. So if the 49ers should go back to their heyday with classic uniforms, the Vikings should do the same.

Because back in 1973 the NFL playoffs used a rotational system which is why the game was played in Dallas despite Minnesota having the better record. The year prior Miami with a 14-0 record had to play in Pittsburgh despite the Steelers 11-3 record.
Super bowls were frustrating. Bowl 4 01-11-70 lost to KC 23 to 7 then 09-20-70 only 8 months later beat them at home 27 to 10. Super bowl 9 01-12-75 lost to steelers 16 to 6 then on 10-04-76 they beat a better steelers team at home 17 to 6 in one of them most physical games you'll ever see.
These are NOT highlights of the 1973 season as advertised. it is the 1974 season. the NFL has been involved in a conspiracy to erase the greatest team and most dominant dynasty in football history from the NFL history, the Miami Dolphins Dynasty 1970-1974, and replace it with a team that the Dolphins, during the intersection of the 2 dynasties (1971-1973) annihilated 3 years in a row: the Pittsburgh Steelers. the dolphins beat the Steelers in those 3 years in every way one team can defeat another: in 1971, they beat Pittsburgh with 3 long bombs, Bob Griese to Paul Warfield (versus "the great" Mel Blount's coverage). in 1972 afc title game, they beat Pittsburgh with the single greatest running performance in NFL playoff history (in three rivers!). and in 1973, Miami beat Pittsburgh with defense, intercepting 6 passes of Bradshaw and Jefferson Street Joe Gilliam, 2 returned for touchdowns (the greatest strong safety, Dick Anderson grabbed 4 of those 4, returned to for TDs, and won Defensive player of the year, mainly based on that performance, a win which Miami didn't even need and a loss for the Steelers that lost them the central division title, made them the wild card, who were easily handled by Oakland, a week before Oakland was annihilated by Miami and 2 weeks before Miami annihilated the Minnesota Vikings in the single most dominant SB win in the history of that game. I am not now, nor have i ever been and Miami fan, even though grew up in miami and attended all their home games the entire 5 years of their dynasty. I was a Baltimore Colts fan from 1965, and hated MIami because they shut my colts out 4 games in a row.

1970's - Glory Days for the Vikings. Made the playoffs almost every year and appeared in 4 Super Bowls. A great team.

This had to be Bud Grant's best Vikings team of his career. The win over Dallas in the NFC title game kind of seals it. Dallas played in 7 of 10 NFC title games in the 70's and went 5 and 2 in them. This was their only loss at home. In fact I think it was the only time they lost one at home in their whole franchise history. Just goes to show how truly great the Dolphins were to handle them so easily in SB-7. The '73 Dolphins were better than the undefeated '72 team. The '72 team won their 3 post-season games by a collective 20 points. The '73 team won by a collective 50.
Miss the old Met Stadium, so much fun to watch football games there. The 70s Vikings were the original frozen tundra warriors.

Over the last 30 years of playing indoors, the Vikings have the largest difference in home wins/road wins.

To me, Bill Brown defines the fullback - right up there with Jim Taylor and Tom Woodeshick from that era. Not a fancy runner, but dished out punishment and was tough to stop. Chuck Foreman was the best runner they'd had, at that point, IMO. He took their running game to a new level.

When Minnesota HC Bud Grrant coached for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League he insisted his players practice standing on the sidelines in a straight line holding their helmets to instill pride and discipline. Grant continued the practice in Minnesota. Minnesota's Jim Marshall thought at first it was silly but as the season went on he came to realize that this tradition had a lot of merit to it.

In those days the Vikings were a Jekyll-and-Hyde team: they'd always win their division and usually do well in the playoffs, yet would always play like a 6-8 team in the Super Bowl.
They were just too small to match up with the bigger, stronger, younger, and faster AFC teams of the early seventies.

I looked this up just for that reason. They look so good here. Deep purple with those shining helmets. This game, beating the Cowboys in Dallas to go to the Superbowl may have been their finest hour. I always loved how NFL Films showcased this game. Perfect music and a stifling, dominant Vikings performance. The Vikings did have the misfortune of playing against some of the 1970s great teams. Dolphins, Steelers, Raiders and an underated Chiefs team. Everyone always talks about the Vikings defense. But their offensive line was just as good. Ed White, Mick Tingelhoff, Ron Yary, Grady Alderman. 10:45 is a great rundown of those players. Jeff Siemon and Wally Hilgenberg were top notch linebackers as well. Of all teams the Vikings moving indoors was and is one of the stupidest moves in all of sports. They took what made the Vikings special, their entire personality and flushed it all down the toilet. And then they committed the second stupidest moves in all of sports when right after the 1987 team showed such great progress they handed that progress to the Cowboys for Herschel Walker. The Cowboys then built a dynasty in the 1990s off of Vikings draft picks. And with just one of the many draft picks they got from the Vikings they drafted hall of famer Emmitt Smith. While Herschel Walker stunk up Vikings offense until disappearing three years later. They have never fully recovered except for the 1998 Vikes who went 15-1 before Gary Anderson handed the Falcons a spot in the Superbowl.
One has to wonder how a team with such a great defense in the 1970s and good offensive weaponry manages to roll over and play dead when the Super Bowls came a calling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree it is not football anymore , player contact is mostly above the waist now , and check any play and nobody falls down on any given play anymore , and the ball carrier gets pushed out of bounds or falls to the ground himself , terrible and surprise no one get hurt any more (not that we want that ) whens the last time players jumped on the field and prayed on thier knees for a pulled groin ! i remember the monday night game vs the falcons and bob lee which was their first loss after opening the season 9-0.
on the winning TD throw by lee he should've been sacked but made a great play to get free and throw a deep one for the score.
And he also was qb when Vikings reached 1977 NFC title game, after Tarkenton got hurt. He also did some punting, if I remember right, in earlier stint with Vikes. His daughter is news anchor Jenna Lee.

I always liked how the Vikings wore two different purple jerseys in 1973. If you'll notice, for most of the season, they wore a uniform without any trim on the sleeves. It was simply a purple jersey with white numbers. But for the Bears game and the Redskins game, they wore their usual uniform with the stripes on the sleeves. I never knew the reason for this. But I liked it and always loved their uniform no matter which one they wore. And to my knowledge, this was the last (maybe only) season they wore that one with no stripes on the sleeves. Pretty cool.

They wore it against the Cowboys in the mid season 1974 game also in the 1969 game versus the Rams....both warm weather games just to name two. You know what? I think the Vikings should go back to their classic 70s uniforms. The 49ers did it and won a Super Bowl. So if the 49ers should go back to their heyday with classic uniforms, the Vikings should do the same.
Why did they play the NFC Championship in Dallas, when the Vikings had a better record than the Cowboys?
The following season (1974), the NFL instituted many telling rule changes: moving the goal posts to the back of the end zone, moving the hash marks inwards, and introducing "sudden death" overtime for regular season games. I'm pretty sure it was also when "home-field" advantage for the playoffs, based on W/L records was introduced.

Because back in 1973 the NFL playoffs used a rotational system which is why the game was played in Dallas despite Minnesota having the better record. The year prior Miami with a 14-0 record had to play in Pittsburgh despite the Steelers 11-3 record.

Super bowls were frustrating. Bowl 4 01-11-70 lost to KC 23 to 7 then 09-20-70 only 8 months later beat them at home 27 to 10. Super bowl 9 01-12-75 lost to steelers 16 to 6 then on 10-04-76 they beat a better steelers team at home 17 to 6 in one of them most physical games you'll ever see.
These are NOT highlights of the 1973 season as advertised. it is the 1974 season. the NFL has been involved in a conspiracy to erase the greatest team and most dominant dynasty in football history from the NFL history, the Miami Dolphins Dynasty 1970-1974, and replace it with a team that the Dolphins, during the intersection of the 2 dynasties (1971-1973) annihilated 3 years in a row: the Pittsburgh Steelers. the dolphins beat the Steelers in those 3 years in every way one team can defeat another: in 1971, they beat Pittsburgh with 3 long bombs, Bob Griese to Paul Warfield (versus "the great" Mel Blount's coverage). in 1972 afc title game, they beat Pittsburgh with the single greatest running performance in NFL playoff history (in three rivers!). and in 1973, Miami beat Pittsburgh with defense, intercepting 6 passes of Bradshaw and Jefferson Street Joe Gilliam, 2 returned for touchdowns (the greatest strong safety, Dick Anderson grabbed 4 of those 4, returned to for TDs, and won Defensive player of the year, mainly based on that performance, a win which Miami didn't even need and a loss for the Steelers that lost them the central division title, made them the wild card, who were easily handled by Oakland, a week before Oakland was annihilated by Miami and 2 weeks before Miami annihilated the Minnesota Vikings in the single most dominant SB win in the history of that game.
