I’ve been reloading for 50 years, and I’m still amazed how different ammo, in the same gun can be so different. Thanks for these videos, I’m sure they are saving people some cash by testing it for them. Be well guys, and God bless.
I use the 96gr. Norma EvoStrike in my Savage 111.... 270; for varmint and they group well; sub MOA. From the information on Norma box, the EvoStrike is a lead free bullet, made from tin and coated in nickel.
My ruger american shoots .75" at 100 yards with the 168 grain ttsx bullet in 308. And took a high shoulder shot on a deer last year that was dead before it hit the ground with minimal meat damage. Really impressed with it. And to boot it manages around 2450 fps out of a 18" barrel. Straight impressive in my book.
One thing that I’ve learned and I haven’t been able to test it is when shooting copper bullets you need to start with a very clean barrel have not shot any cup and core previously. Lehigh put an insert stating that in their boxes
Nice video review! If and when the Eastern States copy California (Colorado is rumored too), the I'll be at my reloading bench making 30'06 with BARNES TTSX 168 grain bullets which I've had great results with on the range! I loved that LAB Radar unit, I wish I had the budget for one of those.
For the accuracy in some of the budget lead bullets I'm going to stick with those, I'm deer hunting so not worried about a half inch difference as long as it expands and I prefer an exit also. Love to watch and learn.
If you are using non lead bullets, try the Hornady black 168 grain or the Norma tipstrike 170 grain. My savage 110 ultralite shoots sub moa with those two loads. Currently have the 170 grain sighted in for the cold bore shot and it hits bulls eye for me.
Just my 2 cents worth but when hunting 1st shot is out of cold barrel,so when I'm testing i always give at least 7min between shots. I realize may not be feasible when making a video. Enjoyed yalls review thank you!
We tried to make sure it was as cool as possible on these videos, BUT you’re right. When filming it’s tough to wait that long. We appreciate you watching!
Maybe I missed it, did you get all fouling out of the barrel before/in between testing? Strange, however, it matters a lot. I couldn’t get any copper to shoot MOA, read about cleaning super well in between and then I was. Once you settle on the ammo you don’t have to clean that way.
Those should be called 150 LRX-- their function window is made to the same specs as the long range versions. Great bullet and ammo... I worked on both sides-- bullet press and lab testing. The 308 bullets run great at press and test well and the ammo never gives the lab problems in testing either. Goldilocks round 💯
Adrien!!!!😂😂. I had too.. Norma 150gr .308 blew me Away when all were in one ragged hole from my fn spr..I’m loadin 110varmageddons with imr 4198 and gettin way over 3400fps 24” barrel..110v max also and man if they ain’t devestating….you have no idea how many bullets I have played with and do everyday lol. All I do honestly..100yrds out front with steel at 520…I could go on for days on loads I’d like to brag about but I’ll ask you..are there any you’d like to know about..? I may have em and have tested a few…tell rocky mickey luvs ya…😉
I picked up some winchester 150gn copper impact in 308 for a new hunting rifle. Mauser m18 with some nice zeiss optics. I wasted the entire box of ammo trying to site that rifle in. Chasing holes all over the paper. Walking away a realy disappointed with about a 3 1/2" groups. I didnt touch anything on the rifle. Just purchased a basic packet of winchester power point 150gn lead cup and core. First three shots at 100y all three holes were toucone another. I realy wanted the copper ammo to shoot well as I can see the advantages not having lead fragments what your going to eat. Though the realy bad group's put me off trying anymore copper bullets as they are to expensive to be disappointed again.
I worked for Lehigh and what I saw that usually caused this is the bore diameter of the rifle is not correct. If you had a gunsmith measure the bore you will probably find it to be .309” or .310” not actually .308”. Copper bullets do not obturate the same as lead core bullets so if a barrel is over sized accuracy will never be achieved. These over sized barrels are also usually not very accurate with anything. This has been a quality control issue in the industry since the very first barrels ever made. Marlin was infamous for 44 mag barrels that measured .430” instead of .429”. Add on top of this most bullets are a little undersized as well and you get some frustrating days at the range.
If everything is torqued correctly, send it back to savage. If you chronograph all the factory ammo, speeds will also tell you that the problem is the rifle. I don’t shoot more than 2-3 different brands of factory ammo to test the accuracy of a new rifle. I chronograph them as well.
My 308 shoots the 168 at 3/4 grp. Your making me wonder if i shouldnt just stay there, though i may try at least one box to see how it does. Take care you two.
That’s weird to me. It’s been my experience that Barnes ttsx, have always been the most accurate commercial cartridge in every rifle I’ve shot them through. They’re faaaar from my favorite bullet, but they’ve always made me look like a professional benchrest shooter. Lol. Especially the 140 grain out of a 7 rem mag. I haven’t had the same luck though with any of the LRX rounds, at least in 6 creedmoor and 7 rem mag.
Just to be fair. If you want to get the best performance out of copper bullets. Like anything else, it's in the prep. If you shoot cup and cor bullets in your rifle or pistol you HAVE to clean all the copper fouling before you shoot an all copper bullet. There two different kinds of copper. Try it first before you Poo Poo it. Clean down to bear steel then shoot a few fouling shots with all copper bullets of your choice, YOU WILL get better groups, copper bullets will shoot better in your gun with the proper prep. Try it you will like it...
I assure you we cleaned this gun THOROUGHLY before we shot this test. I did the same thing with another rifle (lost the footage) at least 2 times and got very similar results. It seems this rifle just didn’t like these bullets. Thanks for the advice, though!
My comment has nothing to do with copper. A Remington 700 that normally shoots sub moa with 168/175 ammo will shoot almost 5 inches with Norma 147gr. This Remington will do great groups with almost everything above 155 with a 1/10 twist. POI will differ but sub MOA is easy.
I have a savage 308 10 fpc-k with a different load and bullets, this rifle group in a .175 in to half inch at 100 yards all a time,Federal fusion 165 gr not a reload .335 in at 100 yards,,my scope is a Nightforce 5x20-56 mm shv c 587,check on youtube Patriot Preeper.Thank,s for your video,you shoot well,it,s the ammo problem,i appreciat your video.
@@ReviewThisThing Just the particular loads he reco'd. Might help to work on your barrel a bit, too. Those can be a bit rough, even though they can end up shooting pretty well.

Good follow up test . Thanks
@donmc7959 absolutely! Thanks for watching!
I'd love to see this test with your .308 CVA Cascade.

There ya go!
I handload the 130 grain Barnes TTSX in 30-06, I average 3050 fps and that is on the lighter side of powder charge. Some load to over 3200 fps.
Oh wow. That’s fast!
Is it accurate

We didn't at first, then we did. We got about the same results, but I think we probably need to clean it again and try it one more time.
Could you test more 110 Savage on different ammunition like the CVA hunting ammunition? Thank you
Well, I would need to get a 110 Savage. I’ve been eyeballing them! 😊
I’m done buying savage and Howa 1500s. Try Tikka, Seekins precision ph2 and even the Ruger American Go Wild 😁😁
I still need to get a Tikka.

@Longtrailside 👍🏻👍🏻
I would try a few round with the muzzle break off!
That would have been interesting to see. Especially because it shoots lead very well.
Why couldn't we see live shots with the barnes vs the other rounds
There’s a little title at the bottom - I forgot to hit record on the Tactacam Spotter LR 🤦🏼♀️
Copper bullets seem to be sensitive to bullet jump. Makes finding factory ammo that works well roll of the dice.
Seems that way!
Thinking out load.........has anyone tried different twist rates for copper?
Interested to know
My mod70 has 1-12 twist, Barnes 130gr average. 5 to .75 3 shot group & chronograph @ 3128 fps 22" barrel
@keithreese9636 👍🏻
@@keithreese9636 clearly the slower twist rate is doing well with copper.
@@johnandrosemarywyatt977 130gr is only copper weight I've tried so far, as good as it performed I'll probably just stick with it

If you saw Part 1, the 150 grain were definitely the best.
Send it back to savage for accuracy issues.
It’s a buddy rifle, and it shoots lead just fine.

You should clean before shooting copper
👍🏻
trade that savage for a tikka you can thank me later
It’s a friend’s Savage, so he may not appreciate that 😂 But we have heard great things about the Tikka. I’d say you might see one next year!
@ReviewThisThing That would be cool 😎
I own 4 tikkas and they all shoot 1inch or better. I love the action and crisp triggers from tikka.
@Hondayo77 my kind of rifle!
I think that rifle has a problem 😮.
I have never seen a savage shoot that poorly.
@2A_lifestyle lead bullets do well. Those non-lead are finicky!
None of them did well, but the normal did just as good. Try again
Right!
