- Let's do a ballistics gel test and review of the 6.5 Creedmoor Hornady Outfitter 120 grain CX fired from a Ruger American chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor with a 22 inch barrel.

All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.

Clean the bore before switching to mono.
I agree. CX tends to need a cleaning less though, its actually not a mono but an alloy, however it is homogeneous. Ive had good success with them even eithout cleaning in some rifles, others needed it.
Whats the reasoning behind that anytime a bullet is to be carried it should get its own clean barrel
It's not "anytime" it's just with the solid copper or alloy. It is suggested you clean out the guilding metal from standard jacketed bullets before using the solids. The solids cause higher pressure because they are harder and the metal can't flow properly into the bullet grooves. This is what affects accuracy.

I'm hearing you - but I'm just not sold on the slower 6.5's if you already have a larger faster caliber or a .223 for smaller stuff.
Rather get some better glass for the money.

I know you state you normally aren’t so concerned with velocity, but I appreciate that you still consider it in your testing. From what I understand Hornady suggests an impact velocity of 2000 fps to achieve 1.5X expansion, so with a muzzle velocity of 2700 fps that is absolutely something to consider at longer ranges.
Barnes minimum impact velocities are considerably lower - around 1500-1600 fps depending on caliber and weight.
Shooting all copper bullets clean ur barrel as wat was stated below for better accuracy make sure u clean it real good

Do some 7mm-08 testing
I had similar results testing the barnes 120 ttsx. They only opened up to .45" at a 100 yards. The downside to lots of penetration, is a skinny wound channel. My father has shot 5 deer now with them and they all ran quite some distance while barely any blood trail. Pretty much just a quarter sized hole punched through them.

It seems with monos the best bet is to find the lightest weight possible and push it as fast as you can. Cant do that tho with factory ammo, obviously. In 6.5CM, they really should have loaded it with 100g. Heck, i load my 270win with the 110g ttsx. Its movin on. Lol
@John_Redcorn_ yea the factory 6.5 stuff is pretty anemic, a 120 at 2800 fps is pretty dam slow. I shoot 125's in my 308 at 3100 fps. You don't need much bullet weight with the mono's to get good penetration.

Have you used Sako Deerhead ammo? Very little reviews available but I am assuming it's great on heavier animals. Just asking around...
Thanks for the testing. These mono metal bullet shot just as poorly, as far as expansion, are like shooting a flat metplat bullet from a 30-30 or 45-70. Sure it punches through anything but is it a good bullet to hunt with?
This is the only ammo I use. My buddy let me field test the CX bullet in 140 grain. Put 2 deer down last year from my new 6.5 with it. Wonder what the price point difference is for the ELDX vs CX?

I'm wondering if I can get this 150g load to perform well out of my Ruger compact 308. I want to run copper, but not sure velocity will be up enough.
What is your max distance? Some years ago a guy posted a video regarding a Barnes TSX, either 150gr or 165gr, not expanding on an elk. As it turned out I think it was a long shot. I've also heard bullets like a TSX at 300 and beyond act like full metal jackets. I have no personal experience with a TSX at that distance but I do with TTSX and they worked just fine. I know this video is on the CX by Hornady but same concept.
With monolithics I almost always load light for cartridge. I'm using the 130 TTSX in my 308s
Drop down to 130g or even 110g. The rule of thumb with monos is to drop 1-2 steps below “normal” weight.
Did you happen to test 160 grain in 7PRC?
The PRC cartridges are way, way down the road
@@masonleather Oh ok. I have a Tikka T3x 7PRC shooting that Outfitter ammo really well, one hole cloverleaf 3 shot groups frequently. I need to clock them. If I draw cow elk for this season it's one of the rifles going with me
That velocity is really disappointing. 150 average fps slower than stated and a 75 fps swing?
Has anyone found the CX load to be accurate?
Consistent 0.7 to 0.8 MoA from Tikka T3X CTR in 6.5CM. Not a match load but then not designed to be. YMMV.

0.5 MOA from my Blaser R8 in 6,5x55 NOR. Have 2900 fps from a 21 barrel.
I am not very familiar with the CX bullet, but I would consider a close range shot that only mushrooms back 1/3 of the way to be a fail. Will that bullet open up at all at 300 yds.? On weight retention, it sounds great, but you can easily see that the mushroom is packed with ballistic gel! I think you need to remove that gel to get a true weight retention number, which I bet will still be 95% or better, but with the gel, it is a little skewed. Good job on the testing.
I get all the gel out I can with a pick and tweezers, it’s a lot harder to remove than it may appear, especially when the petals curl like that. What remains is extremely negligible weight wise.
gel weighs almost nothing compared to the copper or lead
The CX is basically the updated version of the GMX. Oddly enough, the older GMX had a better BC 🤷♂️

Yea hornady must do there velocity testing with 37inch barrels. Bunch of liars! inflated numbers on the box.
Most manufacturers test using a 26 inch barrel, gaining 50 fps for every inch of barrel is not unheard of.
I’ve heard they use 26 inches for 6.5C, which is completely ridiculous and disingenuous. The majority of 6.5C’s used for hunting have 22” or shorter barrels.
@@masonleather They should use different barrels for hunting loads, but if they publish their test barrel length, it is not "fudging". However, with the technology of today's printers, they should redo their velocity numbers for loads that use a different powder than those for the "original" loads. Since they constantly test their batches, they could easily state if a load is 100fps slower of faster than a previous one.
Your exemplars are consistant for your location and may differ from conditions at the factory range, but so will everyone else's.

@@masonleather I own 2 old 270s, and both sport 22 inch barrels. Both ammo manufacturers, and reloading manuals should either give velocities for various barrel lengths or for a more reasonable length.
In real world these acts just like full metal jackets 😢
