That size hat never would've sat on that man's head without completely covering it. They should've scaled the hat down to fit on that Emperor's head, then I wouldn't have even noticed. It has nothing to do with him looking nice.

Also about the painting of the emperor. Qing era artists who painted portaits of the emperor always had to follow a set of rules. One of the rules was that the whole painting should be symmetrical so one side of the emperor's face was the exact same as the other. That might have caused the "bad look"

I'm only familiar with the first 6 emperors bc of dramas. The last few are never talked about in dramas
