  • Sub-20 minute repair job from cover off to cover on and running like new. It looks to be a decent enough switch. The idle power consumption off the 12 V rail is 300 mA, and it seems to increase by 30 mA for every ethernet plug you connect.

    I have bought one of those exact switches back in 2010 and it is still going strong. 24/7 use with about 6 devices connected to it, not to mention the multiple LAN partys every year with all the ports being used.
    Certainly worth the 70€ it cost me back then. Also i'm glad that you made this video so in case mine fails in the same way which is not that unlikely i know what to look for :D /)

    Nice find. You can see at about 0:40 the discoloration on the top lid as you remove it... and again at 4:32 around the IEC socket cut-out on the rear chassis.

    Nice switch. I've got the desktop version (slightly narrower case) plus an 8-port behind the TV for all the gear gathered there and a 5-port in the attic (more gear).

    I replaced my switch because I thought the was no longer working. I bought a brand new switch and for some reason it's not distributing any signal out the other ports. All the lights are lighted up green.

    Nice tons of space to put some supercaps on it, I'm thinking of getting this and put some supercaps on it so I can have a tiny-ups-like for short power cut offs(we get many on rainy days and they last half a second or even less ..just enough to turn off your devices), a supercap at 16.2v(to use 12v) would be enough for it

    It is always a nice feeling when you trash pick something nice and then you spend 20min on it and make it as good as new. And also that the protection film is still there lol!!
    I love it, last summer i found a disassebled samsung 40" smart tv in the trash... Was it any faults with it no?! LOL people are nuts since your from finland do you also talk swedish?

    I have a question. I did see in one of your other videos that you spell light (ljus). So you could be from Sweden. And if you are, how do you find this stuff? I have trouble finding anything actually. :/

      +Ekras I'm from Åland. I started digging through trash as a kid, and I've made quite a few friends in the right places over time, through school internships and so forth. The trick is to just ask around everywhere if you can have free broken shit.

    I know this is probably a very basic question but I don't know much about electronics... I see the power cable that connects the two circuit boards has 2 red and 2 black wires, but when you connect your external power supply you only use 1 red and 1 black? Please can you explain why there are 2 red and 2 black wires, and if I can get away with only using 1 red and 1 black does it matter which of the circuit board pins I connect it to? Thanks in advance.

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They use 4 wires to get more copper. It's the same as using 2 thicker ones, but that's more expensive. Reds and blacks are conneced in parallel, respectively.

    • @SamWomersley
      @SamWomersley 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      FFcossag Thanks for the reply. Why would they need more copper? I have a replacement 12V / 2A power supply but it only has 1 red and 1 black, will that be ok to use?

    Haven't taken it apart yet to see if there's any obvious damage inside

    The caps didn't look damaged, but looks can be deceiving. I wonder if You could change the board caps with corresponding solid polymer caps? I don't know if there are solid caps with corresponding specs - capacitance, resistance, etc.

    Newer ones with the single heat sink destroy themselves with heat, if you added a 12v fan it would last forever.

      A video like this just proves again what we all know, that the other's garbage, is a valuable thing for me (sometimes good things for parts/raw materials, and sometimes just a minor repair that brings the device back to life).

    PMSL, any respect I had for you was immediately vapourised when your foot came into the frame. Socks and sandals?! Are you taking fashion advice from your grandfather?!
    Otherwise a good video, though you should've included some footage of the actual act of trobuleshooting if your aim is to educate the less-technically-inclined.

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My workshop is in an uninsulated basement. I challenge you to dwell within it without socks for more than ten minutes without freezing to death.
      As far as showing the troubleshooting process, I think I basically did; I measured the caps on a hunch and replaced what was bad. I've done this so many times that it's turned into one of those automatic things.

    • @yorickhunt3371
      @yorickhunt3371 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      FFcossag Bah, you're only a kid! Back when I was your age... ;-)... The comment was actually about your use of socks with sandals, something people only expect to see either very young children or very old men wearing.
      This was the first of your videos that I saw, so don't know what level of proficiency your average subscriber/viewer has. I know most "newbies" wouldn't start at the caps.
      Either way, you've earnt yourself another subscriber :-)
