  • My giant cloud rainforest ecosystem vivarium, Pantdora, has been a dream tank. Its unique plethora of flora and fauna, all connected via the food web, and lead to some amazing insights into the workings of Mother Nature! But the time has come to create a second ecosystem vivarium, an attachment to Pantdora, as an extension to the biological world we created. In this episode, I travel to the biodiverse island of Borneo and Australia to explore different biomes, and decide on what animals, plants, and fungi, I might be able to house in our next world. Hope you enjoy this Episode 5, Season 2 of my ecosystem vivarium series. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

    The rainforest canopy is basically insect heaven and there would be plenty of opportunities to see ants, mantises, spiders and predatory beetles hunt for food.
    The canopy also feels like a natural extension of the first vivarium and you could probably move some of the species between the two vivariums if need be.

    Canopy connected vertically to Pantdora gives habitat for sugar gliders & other mammals, as well as a refuge. Since a lot of people want to see a cave, I'd say make a small cave connected to Pantdora in the room like you said. Creatures can then go up into the canopy or "down" into the cave. I think having places where creatures can "leave" Pantdora for a nearby biome will give the most unexpected surprises!

    I love the idea of a second vivarium. For biome my preferences are as follows
    1. Canopy: I love love love the idea of a canopy, a place for fruit trees to grow with really cool plants, combined with tree dwelling animals. I also think it fits very nicely into Pantdora as it exists already.
    2. Glassland: This one is because of the sheer difference to the existing pantdora, it would be quite different to the one we know.
    3. Cave: I'll admit I am not that interested in the cave as a environment in of itself, however it existing with pantdora, acting as a safe haven for animals to me sounds really healthy for pantdora
    4. Swamp: This one sounds like alot of work, and while cool in my opinion it won't mesh the best with existing pantdora
    5. Lowland rainforest: I don't hate the idea, I just see it as too similar to what already exists

    Not sure why but I've been drawn to water my whole life. I've had a childhood experience with a pond with a clean out drain. It had a flowing water source in and a levy to let out on the other side.

    My vote order for the second (and maybe future third?) vivarium:
    1. Canopy: the biodiversity, the fruit and refuge to help the cloud rainforest below, dormouse and other intersting critters
    2. Cave: cool air and refuge to help the cloud rainforest, cool water feature(s), cool crystalline and interesting shaped formations
    3. Lowland: biodiversity, flowers, marmoset enrichment events
    4. Swamp: would be very interesting if a shore-type area was added, more amphibians and aquatic reptiles and fish, cool aquatic plants; but not as self-sustaining
    5. Grasslands: bug refuge, rodents; but hot, bright sunlight and needing to constantly replant (so not as self-sustaining)

    1. Cave - I like that it will provide a refugium for our favourite Pantdora residents.

    PERSONAL OPINION: Grassy Plains with Caves below in one!
    Grassy plains is by far the best one. Flowering plants, pollinators, grasses, etc offer something your current system doesn't. If you had leaf cutter ants they'd probably love grassland too. You could even use sandy soil that is poorer in nutrients so mostly only grass and wildflowers thrive there but don't get too crazy. It'd be very different to a jungle as it's slightly drier and will have less nutrients in the soil. You could even install large basking rocks and dead wood for reptiles that also act as places to drop offering to the inhabitants. Overall I think a place with actual flowering plants, less rainfall, pollinators etc would be so much more interesting than the other biomes. It would offer true variety and you would be able to see which biome your ant species prefer. Another thing to add is grasses typically have shallow roots, so you could install hollow caverns below the grassland with entrances and that you can place cameras as well as view them from the outside of the glass.
    Edit: I also noticed in the video you said you might need to replant grasses in case they get eaten but grasses have evolved to be grazed you should not be concerned about that.

    16:35 HECK YES.
    20:38 swamp is not easy to house in a vivarium with the same size of your pantdora. if you ever make one in that size it would just be look like a dirty aquarium and like you said it requires a lot of human intervention and filter system.
    30:54 your idea of canopy is a really good one and very possible to execute.
    35:35 i think the best and suitable vivarium is either cave or canopy as both of them are not easily accessible for human insights. so it would really be nice to see how the process of life cycle happened on both.
    as for swamp, lowland, and grassland. for lowland its more like pantdora and you already have it, as for swamp i already shared my opinion at the beginning of my comment, and for the grassland it also requires a quite lot of human intervention and like you said it will required a ton of light so its either make that vivarium outside of your house or you gonna have to make a roof opening, so grassland will definitely required you a lot of work and renovations in your house.
    Nevertheless, i think your main plan here is which to make first as i believe your end game here would definitely building all of those ecosystem. so for me go for either cave or canopy first, then lowland but bigger than pantdora so you can introduce larger animals now than your typical sizes for your vivarium, then swamp or lowland which you'll gonna have to create outside of your house now or better make separate building for it which would definitely a big project which will be a good addition for you content so make sure to save this idea for future reference.
    anyway, although you started on ants and we started watching because of it plus pinoy e syempre suporta tayo sa kababayan, vivarium contents made me watch more as its more entertaining and gives more knowledge on how kinda ecosystem works. learning the behaviors of different insects and animals. so yeah i'd definitely looking forward for you to complete all ecosystem vivarium. xD

    Hi mikey, im a licensed vet tech who works specifically w/ primates (including marmosets & tamarins). I think your primate idea is a good one if you decide to go that way. Despite your aviary being well above the minimum size, it still feels a wee small to me for them to live out the rest of their lives in. THAT SAID.... they are captive bred, so of course they aren't going to have the space that their wild habitat would afford them, and I think you're probably leagues ahead of anyone else who would buy them as pets anyway. So if they must be pets, you're definitely the best option imo. I also think it helps a ton that your plan would be to let them explore a different area when you film. That alleviates a lot of my concern over the size of their space, because you'd still be giving them plenty of opportunity to encourage their natural curiosity & exploration. You really couldn't ask for better enrichment and captive care. And no doubt your aviary will provide plenty of enrichment to them for a long while as well, but they are highly intelligent creatures that require mental stimulation (i.e enrichment) on a daily basis. After they grow used to their environment, I would suggest coming up with new ways to spice things up for them, and challenge them. I do have a few warnings for you: they smell. MUSKY. worse than ferrets. they're fast af and if they don't like you, they'll go for your eyes.

    • @exidy-yt
      @exidy-yt 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

    • @ItsTheLaw
      @ItsTheLaw 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @exidy-yt you know, full disclosure, I actually have a medical condition where I don't have a sense of smell 😅 so my ideas of what animals smell are based purely off of second hand information. People tell me ferrets smell, and tbqh I have no choice but to take their word for it. Tams and marms on the other hand are potent enough that even I can get a faint wiff, and that's when you know ur cooked 😂

    • @ItsTheLaw
      @ItsTheLaw 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @pixazelz yeah I don't entirely disagree. If this were a wild catch situation, I'd be 1000% against it. But captive breds are never going to released, even if someone wanted to release them, they would just die in the wild. And while I think the MOST ethical option would be to source them from some kind of rescue, if possible, I also think, just realistically, most people don't have access the resources Mikey does. he has the means to care for them better than probably anyone else would. If he can ensure that even two of them are properly cared for then I'm happy with that.

    Since the cloud forest was your first one I suggest a grassland prairie as the second. The natural progression would be this anyway. Mountains become grasslands. It would also allow an underground viewing window to actually see under the soil for you to see the ants better. Prairies don’t get that much rain normally so it’s a good way to observe species that like drier conditions.

    As someone who lives in a swamp (Louisiana here), I think the potential of swamps is unlimited. It does not necessarily need to be all water. In fact, the most interesting thing about the swamp ecosystem is the bridge between water and land. Clearly, I think keeping crocodiles (alligators on our side) is not right and also unreasonably dangerous. But varieties of snakes, turtles, bugs, and ants are limitless. With this said, I gather that the swamp is not going to be the one selected. With everything left, I definitely vote for the lowland rainforest. I also feel like you were most enthusiastic about this one.

    My personal favourite right now would be the following:
    - Divide the new big Vivarium into two open & adjacent biomes, 3/5 of that lowland rainforest and the other 2/5 either swamp, open grassland or a cave system. Emphasis for that 2/3 should maybe better go towards a refugium for animals used as prey to give them a stable and save environment to multiply.
    - Once both Vivariums are thriving, combine both with a 3rd Canopy one on the second ant room floor like you suggested yourself at 30:26
    This, in my opinion, would be the most stable and diverse option and interesting to see how different each biome would develop on it's own and interact with each other aswell.

    • @Nphen
      @Nphen 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I was thinking something like this, too. Pantdora needs a refugium both above & below. A lot of people want canopy, so that's a must. He already has glass floor panels ready to expand up there! After that, perhaps on the same level as Pantdora, and connected, a swamp leading to a cave?

    Each of these choices would be magnificent, and I do not doubt that you'd blow us all into the next galaxy with the ecosystem in which you decide to design. I've dreamed about having a saltwater fish tank for years, and your videos have inspired me to finally fulfill this dream and build a 100-gallon reef tank.

  • @andrewschwitzgebel9685
    @andrewschwitzgebel9685 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +30

    I think a swamp has the potential to be the coolest addition, but because it would require so much maintenance and help it isn't a good addition. The best part about Pantdora is how it is largely self-sustaining and self-regulating - a true ecosystem behind glass!
    For that reason, a cave refugia where creatures that are having trouble with the heat can escape to is probably the most practical. Personally, I'd love to see a cave addition and a canopy addition down the line! The canopy strikes a good balance between serving the greater ecosystem and offering cool potential for new creatures.

      @@AntsCanada Hey, I used to care for a marmoset exhibit full time at a former job. I'd strongly reccomend against it. There is a huge list of reasons why, but mainly they have long lives, complex needs, and aren't easy to handle. Please feel free to DM.

      @@AntsCanada personally I'd agree, primates are smart, have complex social lives and a high degree of freedom of movement in nature. Its hard to imagine a way to provide an equivalent life in captivity

    I was reading a paper on biology, and the writer kind of changed how I view things.
    He said that we usually use "biodiverse" to mean "good", when in reality, it just means "stable" or "resource rich." A long-lasting ecosystem is biodiverse because it's had enough time for lots of species to adapt to it, and a lot of potential food sources.
    To that end, I want a grasslands biome. Living on the North American prairie, I've learned that people often don't appreciate just how diverse the ecosystems can be. They're not as biodiverse as rainforests, but they're gorgeous.

    When I started watching this channel years ago, it was all ants. To see you go through a pandemic, lose colonies, build the ant house, and now this. 5 years ago I would have never ever thought this is where you would be. Your story telling has immensely improved to the point I feel I’m watching a full blown production show! Please never stop.
    And P.S.
    I want to see those blue ants again some day!

    Canopy for sure! It makes perfect sense to go along with the current rainforest.

    . While I think Cave would be easiest, Swamp would be hardest, and Canapé would be coolest, Lowland rainforest is really close to what you already have, I think Grass land would be most beneficial for your environment overall.
    How to do this wouldn't be to difficult. Fine-leaf fescue only needs 3-6 hours of direct sunlight so a large window is all it needs. You could also get a few tubers, flowers, and shrubs for plants, maybe a berry. As for predictors the biggest would probably be a mouse. Then set it up like a hill sloping down to the window, it wouldn't need a lot of maintenance being so small. Though it would need several gallons a year, it's not an acre, and evaporation would simply recycle into the system.

    When there is 1 there is 2. When there is 2 there is 10. Eventually the entire room will one giant vivarium. So excited you are adding on, never let this series die. The cave system would be really cool, but I think that should be the 3rd Vivarium... The swap would be so cool, but because of not being able to self regulate, and the want for the Caiman. I think that should be the last ecosystem made, and maybe you can find a way to connect some of the natural filtering systems from the other vivarium's to help the swap system regulate itself. Rainforest is a must eventually. And I would love to see it first, which might be best as you will need the time to tame. Canopy would be so cool as a house feature let alone a video series. I think that has to be the next one, it would look so cool and be an awesome edition. I think we all know which one will be next!

    My vote:
    I think that YOU sounded the most excited about the canopy and grassland biomes. I think I originally voted swamp when you first put up the polls. But now I think canopy is the best idea.

    The Canopy sounds the most interesting. The others seem to bring with them complications that can't be gotten around. The swamp and grasslands brings with them the most human intervention which acts counter to the intentions of your vivariums. The cave also sounds really interesting and would love to see some form of glow worms, but while in my mind perhaps I'm not being creative enough, the cave might bring with it complications in how to shoot (camera angles and such) for it without interfering much. The lowland rainforest to me sounds as though you'd be closely or similarly be recreating Pandora, just with different species in flora and fauna.
    Just depends on what you're willing and not willing to do and how the community votes. Could surprise us and do all of them as one of those classic 'got ya' moments. Either way will be worth the watch and journey.

    A cave system is the least represented biome of the lot. The opportunity to spread knowledge of this underappreciated diverse biome cannot be understated. Not to mention the awesomeness that can be preserved through film of the natural interactions between various animals in this particular biome.

      Definitely need the balance of the cave in the eco system, but I'm gathering from the comments that idea is lost. Perhaps I'm taking to logical an approach.

    2) Canapy
    3) Cave
    4) Lowland Rainforest
    5) Grassland
    I have a feeling the swamp won’t happen but idk like to see it. And I think having the marmosets would be cool if you decide to keep them☺️
