Can quite see you edging into your new rank. For sure, the leap from a 2nd Mate's responsibility to a Chief Mate's is a vast one. The CCR will more or less be your 'office' (and also the main deck) from 0900 to 1200 while at sea. You will eventually get used to waking up at 0345 hrs but you'll have the pleasure of getting the 'siesta' from 1300 hrs to 1545 hrs 🙂. Online sources revealed that the 'Aldebaran' is a Japanese built vessel. Jap yards do not provide integrated bridges like on the ships built in South Korean yards. The DWT of 19697 makes your vessel a 'handy' sized one. I have served on tankers (sister ships) of a similar DWT, but they were single hulled ones with a pump room. In my entire career on tankers, they turned out to be the toughest ones I worked on as they carried only veg oils and palm products. Tank cleaning using portable machines would push me and the deck crew to the limits. We used to discharge heated palm products in the thick of winter in Europe and then had to clean tanks while in the turbulent waters of the North Sea. Cargo would be waiting for us in Poland and we then had to cross the Atlantic and get battered by hurricanes until we reached a port in the U.S. East coast. I have called in at San Lorenzo quite a few times. We used to mainly load soyabean oil for China and sometimes sunflower oil. I hope your Magellan Strait transit will be done using the 'inner route' from Punta Arenas to Ancud. It will be a memorable experience. Looking forward to an upload of this transit. Lots of stuff for you to upload in the future given your new rank which I'm sure will have both quality and quantity like all the previous ones😊.
So so kind of you to share your experience, single hull tankers have been seen in books and videos only in my little experience out at sea! You are absolutely correct about the difference between jap and korean ships, my last few vessels as you said correctly were korean built! Ah palmoils and veg oils are what i have carried for a part of my career, i do understand how hard it is to discharge in the winter, and i do believe i shall have plenty such experiences on a regular basis in the future! Tank cleaning for ex veg oils in colder climate is definitely tough. As the series continues i hope to be able to show that! Also! Just so that u know these videos are back dated! I have safely completed my contract and returned so i can relate in my little experience as mate to the hardships that u had faced in ur vast experience! I hope to hear more from you!
