    Lying in the grass on a summer day intent on observing the passing clouds. Greeting and spending the day with an old friend long absent. A feeling of security rooted in love. A fulfillment in the events of everyday life, however mundane, knowing that they become transcendent. The unfolding panorama of life in the knowledge of God and eternity. All this I see in Bainton's Symphony, so grand but so unpretentious, clothed in gorgeous orchestral colors and eliciting majesty and sincere emotion. Everything proceeds as it should. Everything is all right. Christ died for us, and today is our opportunity to embrace Him.

      As a Christian this piece resonates with me in a unique way - something I think you're touching on with your last sentence. There is a sense of peaceful, uncomplicated joy in the reprise of the opening melody with its increasing emotional swells, and a final triumph over darkness in the final chords.

      @@frankborder -- "Then, with Micah's idols and his priest, the men of Dan came to the town of Laish, whose people were peaceful and secure. They attacked and killed all the people and burned the town to the ground. There was no one to rescue the residents of the town, for they lived a great distance from Sidon and had no allies nearby. This happened in the valley near Beth-rehob.Then the people of the tribe of Dan rebuilt the town and lived there. They renamed the town Dan after their ancestor, Israel's son, but it had originally been called Laish." (Judges 18:27-29) [This is my favorite since God approves of this slaughter in verse 6.)

    The epilogue sounds like a haunting reprise of the opening melody. Where is this recording by Vernon Handley? The 2nd symphony is on Chandos but i cannot find this in the catalogue.

    Now this man had a lively history - never conducted Schoenberg, I believe.

    • @dewarfinch1
      @dewarfinch1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Indeed. As Director of the Sydney Conservatorium Bainton turned down Schoenberg's application for the position of teacher of harmony and theory in 1934 on the grounds of "modernist ideas and dangerous tendencies."
