That opening shot with the backlighting on the exhaust smoke is fantastic. Some good old Cat dozers there. Surprised it was decided it was fit to run after all that.
The Covered Hopper was derailed and on its side, not to much damage. When they left the car was destroyed, 10/12k damage to the chutes and gates alone. Not 1 safety appliance left on the car not bent beyond recognition. 40,000 dollar rail car reduced to scrap, Great Job, lucky they didn’t get injured.

Great video. Cool shots. I am going to southern Arizona in January. I’m going to rail fan the up sun set route. What stops are the best for railfanning there.
East of Tucson it's a bit difficult to access good spots, but west of Tucson you'll find a lot of nice spots. Follow the highway that parallels the line. My favorite spot is Shawmut in the desert just east of Gila. I have a playlist on the channel main page with several videos from this line. Just check it out :)

So, with enough effort, anything is potentially repairable. While there is a lot of twisted metal on this car, i have to wonder, would it have been refurbished and returned to service? Part of me looks at it, and thinks, that can be reworked. The big factor is labor vs value. If it takes too much labor to fix too many problems, then you can tip the scales toward replacement... I guess I don't necessarily see that here, unless maybe the entire thing got twisted. Then yeah, I could see it being scrapped. Do you know what they did with this hopper?
I have seen these cars on tanker trains that pass through the farm on the BNSF here in central Texas, but for the life of me I cannot recall the writing on the car, but it is, at least from what I've seen, a 'special' buffer car. I'll have to keep my eyes out for the next tanker train.

What I don't understand is why CSX hasn't learned that heavyweight trains require a pusher in the middle or at the rear of the train like UP and BNSF to avoid delays and track tie-ups when a train stalls.
+norman mckenzie Well, occasionally they do. They actually experiment quite a bit. I've seen a coal train that had the DPU put in the last third of the train, so neither in the middle nor at the end.
