As an EV owner of many years let me say that range anxiety isn’t a thing. The vast majority of drives are so far below my range I honestly don’t think about it. On those not infrequent occasions where work or my personal life takes me on a longer journey yeah, I’ll charge (at home) to 100% (I normally only charge to 72%) and have to spend a few minutes considering my route to account for charging needs, which isn’t a big deal. I get that motorcycles are about the freedom to ride, but really how many rides are completely unplanned? One of the great things I’ve seen over the last few years is the number of cool places that have figured out EV chargers bring business... crazy weird fun places like petting zoos (seriously I thought it was just a charger and diner but *bewm,* petting zoo!!), reptile farms, museums etc. So not only are there *_way_* more chargers, they bring you to fun places :) Oh, and btw, that listed charging time can be cut in half... it takes just as long to charge an EV battery pack from 0-80% as it does from 80-100% regardless of the speed of the charger or battery chemistry so you only charge to 80% unless needs must (which they really never do). Besides, it isn’t as if we’ve never seen a car or motorcycle sitting on the side of the road because they ran out of gas... it’s not the end of the world.
Motorcycles and cars are used differently. I wouldn't really mind an electric car because it would be primarily used to get to work and home. For me and many other riders a long Saturday ride can be 2 fill ups and planing a route based on electric charging stations isnt something I want to do. I like to get lost and discover new roads outside the city. So I don't like the idea of an electric motorcycle just yet. We'll see what the next few years bring.
@@grendelum Depends on the bike. My Ducati Monster gets about 150-175 miles per tank. My Road King is about 200 or so. A 400 mile Saturday ride for fun isn't uncommon
As an EV owner I can tell you range anxiety absolutely can be a thing. My commute is between 30-55 miles depending on where I'm working. Most of the time, my commute is my commute, and I'm not really worried about it. I know my car can make it to work and back, I know my zero can make it to work and back. But occasionally I have to go out of my way and do a couple more errands. I've made it home on my Zero with 1% battery. It's not fun, it's really anxiety inducing, and it's a real thing. If I didn't have the power tank the range on the Zero wouldn't be adequate for me.

I test-rode a Zero back in January and was completely blown away by the performance. It put my BMS K1300S to shame on everything except top speed. What prevented me from buying one was the moped-like styling. They looked like toys. This new model finally has me interested in buying one.
There is a lot to like about this motorcycle. The phone app that it comes with is incredible, the information that it gives you and the way it connects with the bike, is phenomenal. I was thrown off by the fact that you can hear a bike behind you shift, takes a little to get used to. Fun ride Chase.
YOU NEED TO TEST RIDE ONE! I’m 64yrs old, peddled a ‘85 VMax for 20yrs, & a ‘05 Triumph Speed Triple for the past 14yrs. Dead quiet, no vibrations allows you to enjoy riding even more. Zero dealers have all 4 models available to road test. I took the SR/F out for a 15 min ride, & didn’t want to return it. 60-100mph was quick but I’ve been on faster bikes. But from a dead stop it’ll out accelerate practically any IC engined bike, once they need to start shifting & falling behind you. Showa suspension, the brakes are J.Juan which is part of it’s all Bosch operating system, & performed excellently, great feel/power, rear brake was typical of all bikes, nothing great. Engine braking s mild, engine heat/noise is nonexistent, which in FL is a major summertime riding drawback.. It’ll top out at 125mph, but I need a bike capable of 150 to feel fully satisfied. The future of motorcycling is gonna spoil us,,,it’s about time👍.
do want! I never go more than about 100 miles at a time anyway, so it feels like it would be a good fit for me. Having double the torque of my old 919 sounds fun as well!
Electric bikes might be the norm in the near future if theres a breakthrough in battery tech. Graphene batteries possibly. With better range, so many people would want these.
Regarding regenerative braking: "Normal day to day probably not gonna see a lot." I would presume that in normal stop and go situations you would slow down quite often allowing for some regeneration to occur.
Not only does the ZEROS have adjustable brake regen, which I keep at 100%, but they also have coasting regen which I keep at about 20%. So coasting down steep mountain grades, you'll hardly ever need to brake. Just like engine braking on an ICE bike.
@@robertkossak7261 Thank you. I hope this gets back to Chase so he can update his future electric bike reviews to indicate that regenerative braking will be utilized often.
Tesla has the infrastructure in place now. And most of the time you fuel up at home every day or two so charging stations are only necessary if you go on road trips.
It's great to see and hear your enthusiasm. (I've been riding electric motorcycles for a decade and really enjoyed my first ride on an SR/F last week) but FFS do some homework before you ride. The sad truth is that the SR/F has less range than the previous models; the battery is the same size (14.4kWh) and the bike is heavier....AND, unlike the SR and DSR, there's no power tank option to increase the range...I agree about the daft name too.
Less range and more weight is due to the bigger, more powerful engine. There are always tradeoffs. Just like a car, bigger engine = worse fuel economy.
I test rode the first one that came to the nearby dealership. I think I was the third guy that tried it. I was beyond impressed. Way way above anything that I expected especially, after first trying the mid range model which was quite disappointing. While I was waiting at the traffic light, an old guy rolled down the window of his truck and told me how he liked the bike. I wouldn't spend $22k for base trim on the road but, it is really nice for those who are willing for such sacrifice. What I don't understand is claims about longevity. There are many parts there that can fail and replacing any of them would be extremely expensive. My laundry machine lasted almost 15 years but, the electric motor eventually died.
So much silliness over the bike being too quiet. "They won't hear you coming." Modern cars are sound proofed to hell an back, the Doppler effect is still a thing, and the bit that all the happy sounds come out of is pointed the wrong way. Hate to break it to ya, but *they already can't hear you.*
If you're looking to go Tesla then you already shouldn't be worried about the infrastructure. They have superchargers everywhere. If you can charge at home then it's also no hassle (actually I find it a *negative* hassle. I no longer have to spend time at gas stations at all). For road trips it's as you say: since you have the range you plan your stops around lunch/coffee breaks which you'd take anyways.)
no1bandfan Wow, the dates on this youtube video about a guy's impressions of an electric motorcycle are off by a full digit! That pretty much ruins the entire video... I got mine on Friday. Spent some time at the Rock Store on Mulholland yesterday and had a crowd of bikers surround me taking pics and asking questions. They all thought it was great. I told Harlan Flagg of Hollywood Electrics we should hold a demo ride out there.
Holy shit. I had no idea an electric bike looked this amazing. I was commenting on the other Zero video saying that electric bikes look crude. I take back what I said. When I clicked on this video my jaw dropped. WOW. This is a beautiful machine, every detail is just mesmerizing. The fins on the batteries are the primary piece, along with the visible finned motor. The fins are what make motorcycles look good, you can't have a motorcycle without cooling fins on everything!
Zeros are GREAT bikes for daily commute (drive to work, and back, charge at home overnight. Then take it somewhere for a ride at night (where you won't piss off you neighbors blasting around), or on the weekends where you can have lunch or dinner while you fast charge. The charge tank I think is a MUST!. For most commutes, chagrin in 4 to 5 hours works fine. Being able to recharge in under 2 hours, lets you go somewhere, shop, get some food, walk a bit, and drive back home. Also, if you blast around range is not so good, but cruising at 45- to 55 mph you can get a lot of range (font' recommend for a road trip, though it is do-able with planning) but if you live in a busy city, like Los Angeles, again, great commuting option. Having said that, if you hav never risen one, Got to a dealer and try it! Is a Blast and somethign everyone should try! (whether you care for electric motorcycles or note)
Agree about the two issues. SR/F might stand for Sitting Recharging /Fail. eBikes will remain toys until battery price drops to half and capacity doubles. Maybe in the interim they should consider a hybrid with a little constant RPM gas generator, at least make that an option and design the frame to have space for it, then those that don't want it can use the space for more storage.
Do it. The normal S is still very quick. And I've done absolutely no routine maintenance in 25,000 miles and counting. Replaced brake pads, tires, and belt only once recently. And I can still keep up with the 1000's until highway speeds.
@@the.communist : Performance sells sport bikes, and ease of use / lack of maintenance. Range anxiety / charge times are all holding back EV deployment. TIf you have environmental transport concerns, your only way to redemption is to walk everywhere, or keep your old car/bike for another 2 decades - embedded CO2, etc, due to manufacture of a new vehicle will nearly never be offset meaningfully. Prices will become realistic at the same tiime as ... wait .. never (relatively), because straight petrol vehicles will get "banned" and the EV rideshare model will give EV manufacturers any incentive on competing with "dino-burners" (jk). Don't get me wrong, not a hater at all, I would love to chuck an EV (20-30kWh, unfortunately a battery of that size will cost in the order of $15-$25k -AUD, motor, torque splitter and power electronics are the cheap part) hybrid powertrain in my current truck to allow low cost / free local travel - using home solar power, replacing petrol consumption is a better proposition than getting a low Feed-In-Tariff..
FYI most mountains and other camping sites / areas have RV chargers which will fast charge the bike. :) I so want you to to take the SR/F to the mountains, plan to charge it once at an RV stop, and you'll be good to go, mainly because I wanna see how you like mountain driving on this thing.
This is a revolution. To be able to recharge a battery this size in 4 hours standard is amazing. Also you can plug it in at night and tell it when you want it to start and stop charging. The performance and stability seem to be on point. This jumps way ahead of all those new electrics announced recently like the Harley Livewire, which were hoping to be the Zero killer. Now they have a new bar to jump over and it's not gonna be easy. This bike can do it all, except maybe long distance touring. I agree with the name thing. I like bikes with names: "Panigale", "Brutale", "Katana", "Ninja", "Hayabusa", "Rocket", "California", "Daytona", "Rune" "Speed Triple", are all badass names and we all know what emotions and feelings those names evoke. I hate just letters and numbers, they carry no emotional content, no descriptive power.
Grafight23 SRF. Essareff. Street Racer Fast. Names are better, for sure, but at least with Zero there’s not a whole lot of models to keep track of - yet.
An Indian brand of ours named revolt solved this range problem with replaceable batteries. So you can either charge them at your own or you can replace them in a nearby station or even have them delivered to your house!

Tho _”regen”_ is acceptable as once you own an EV *_everyone_* asks about regen... I think they missed a trick on this bike by not putting a clutch pedal or grip to use like regen paddles in a car.
Idk where you live but in California you can take a state-approved motorcycle course where the bikes are provided, and if you pass you're exempt from the road test for licensing.
I think it's cool, idk if I'd ever own one though. Personally I like the whole motorcycle experience of being raw to the elements, manually shifting, having an engine screaming right under you. Taking out so much of that would get rid of some of the enjoyment and rawness of the motorcycle I think.
I understand why you like the noise since you grew up with it, and for generations, car and bike people associated noise with power. Also shifting is something all bikers get used to, but in reality, a transmission is a heavy, maintenance liability that is only needed because ICE bikes and cars have crappy torque at low RPM. Once you experience a bike that has lots of power and torque without any noise, and no need for a transmission, you will change your mind. Try it, you'll like it.
the range is not the problem, 322km is more than enough for 90% of people be it car or bike, 320km on electric bike is impressive and its more than any petrol/gas powered bike will do on full tank. Plus rapid charger will charge it fairly quickly, not as quick as refueling, true. Obviously it wont be enough for all those posters here that go on their adventure trips 24/7 365, the special category of humans.
John Jacob - what distance is two fill ups?
@@grendelum Depends on the bike. My Ducati Monster gets about 150-175 miles per tank. My Road King is about 200 or so. A 400 mile Saturday ride for fun isn't uncommon
@@grendelum On my cb1000r Usually somewhere around 150 give or take depending how I'm riding.
What a great electric bike review! Unusually full of enthusiasm and honesty. In fact one of the most enthusiastic bike reviews I’ve seen, electric or gas. I’m seriously considering getting one and watching your first ride has certainly given me the necessary kick up the ass to arrange a test ride myself. Thanks.
Nice, I rode the SR 3 years ago and was a blast. The SR/F looks amazing and if it's indicative of the newer latest model, this one will be the gte (go to electric) motorcycle.

There is a lot to like about this motorcycle. The phone app that it comes with is incredible, the information that it gives you and the way it connects with the bike, is phenomenal. I was thrown off by the fact that you can hear a bike behind you shift, takes a little to get used to. Fun ride Chase.
We live in noisy environments. Our brains arent used to silence, pity cause its the best thing
Another thing to think about is even if you ride the piss out of it you can charge it at night and have it ready by morning!
I ordered my 2020 SRF. Arrives in October. Can’t wait for it.
A bike I can start at 3am to go for a ride without my neighbours filing a noise complaint.
Electric bikes might be the norm in the near future if theres a breakthrough in battery tech. Graphene batteries possibly. With better range, so many people would want these.
Solid state batteries are coming soon. In a few years, worries about mileage will be as dead as ICE vehicles
Please ride the electric Harley when it comes out later this year so we could get a comparison

Power tank available in the fall
Off the charts torque, literally
God I want one. I love how it's just so quiet and so low maintenance. I just don't have to money atm.
That intro was so corny, make more please
i've watched countless e-bike reviews and one thing i have not heard mentioned once is the benefit of no handle vibration
That sound check was epic
Hate to break it to ya, but *they already can't hear you.*
they hear all of my bikes and cars... bah lee dat...
@@WintedTindows1 news flash, the inattentive driver could not care less about the "cool" sounds your bike makes.
Where's the dove to help with the review?
when your use to a sportbike with full bodywork deflecting wind off your chest, its hard to ride a naked at speed blasting you

the actual motor is braking and regens some energy back when you are braking. you can get like 20-30% energy back depends on the situation.

Looks better than the HD Livewire.

Quiet is cool!!
The future of transportation no matter how many wheels!
The reason it turns so light is because of the lack of an engine which has a gyroscopic effect on the handling.

I kind of want an electric motorcycle as my first bike for commuting, mainly because of the lack of maintenance more so than gas savings or torque...
Do it. The normal S is still very quick. And I've done absolutely no routine maintenance in 25,000 miles and counting. Replaced brake pads, tires, and belt only once recently. And I can still keep up with the 1000's until highway speeds.

"Different" mindset, not "wrong".
I so want you to to take the SR/F to the mountains, plan to charge it once at an RV stop, and you'll be good to go, mainly because I wanna see how you like mountain driving on this thing.
Wow that torque is a killer the future of motorcycle's. 👍👍👍
I want one as my first bike but I can almost guarantee they won't let you take the driving test with a clutch-less/gear-less bike.
Idk where you live but in California you can take a state-approved motorcycle course where the bikes are provided, and if you pass you're exempt from the road test for licensing.
You can bring any street legal bike in... the places that I've asked.
If you want rawness, boil down your ride to you, the power, and the wind and nothing else. Learn how a true ride feels without the rigamarole
I don't know why but it looks like an MV Agusta Brutale 800
the range is not the problem, 322km is more than enough for 90% of people be it car or bike, 320km on electric bike is impressive and its more than any petrol/gas powered bike will do on full tank. Plus rapid charger will charge it fairly quickly, not as quick as refueling, true. Obviously it wont be enough for all those posters here that go on their adventure trips 24/7 365, the special category of humans.
No the problem is price, range is just unnecessary excuse if we were to be honest.
