Skillfully done and an amusing application of Buzz Lightyear. When I teach wood turning, I recommend using all common senses except taste. In this case, the carving sound tells a story about the wood, grain and the cutting edges even though it is behind the narration and music.

All my carving tools belonged to my grandfather, they are English Sheffield steel they hold an edge well. When I use them they always remind me of my dear old grandpar using them. Love that store but it's definitely hard on my bank account! I wonder if you would find more control and power if you had the workpiece lower. A carver's vise holds it kind of high, but if you had the workpiece say 6" lower, you would get more power from your shoulders. Look at your body mechanics at 4:13 and you can see what I'm talking about, you're mainly using your forearms and wrists. All in all a very good video though.

Carving time depends a lot on the design, the methods you use, the wood you're using, and your level of expertise- both general expertise and practice with a particular shape. For spoons I regularly carve, like the butter paddles we make, I can go from log to completed paddle in about 20 mins.

I've never worked with green wood before. If you do use a green blank, do you need to allow it to dry it before sanding (or however you want to finish the surface), or applying finish?

I usually rough carve my green blanks and wait a week or two to finish carve so they've got a chance to dry out a bit.

That looks really good. Did you give that spoon the “star treatment“ because you were filming it? 😬

Haha definitely not. It might have actually been the fastest spoon I’ve ever carved. 20 mins start to finish!

Hi, Anne! I’m a new follower and I’m wondering about the Skorp (?) is it bladed on both sides? I didn’t see a link for that particular tool and I dig it! ;)
