Thank you for displaying the Flag on the wall correctly. I have some oak from a giant tree branch and was thinking of trying a spoon or two. This looks like the way to go.
I have watched dozens of tutorials on spoon carving and so far, yours are the most detailed. I have learned so much from watching your videos. Keep it up and thank you!
I'm new to spoon carving and I've watched a lot of videos, I now have my favorite stop for instruction! You're awesome! Thanks for the perfect play by play!
Good advice regarding the grain, thank you. Twenty-five years as a blacksmith taught me that the more you work with a straight back, your head directly above your feet, the longer your back will last, and the less pain you´ll suffer when you´re 71, like me. It is so easy to maintain an uncomfortable position - ( ¨ just ´til I get this bit done ¨ ) but that leads to a working lifetime of discomfort. Here in Spain we put a finished spoon in the oven, with olive oil -- the hot wood really sucks it in and gives a lovely finish. Thanks again for an excellent video.
Next time you refinish your spoon you may want to use a different kind of oil, olive oil goes rancid after a while, so I prefer to use nut oil or salad oils that have a longer shelf life.
@@AnneofAllTrades I´ve used olive oil for many years, on my motorcycling leathers, gloves, boots etc, never had any problems with it going rancid, I believe it has some anti-biotic properties. Also with spoons the heating process seems to render it inert. If it shows any signs of making my spoons rancid I´ll take your advice, but it would definitely be a first. Have you actually tried it, or are you passing on what you´ve heard ?
@@kerryburns6041 I tried it, and I couldn’t use the spoon again once it had turned because it had gotten into the pores of the wood, and that particular flavor is especially gross to me, but is probably subtle enough most people wouldn’t notice.
Thank you so much for honoring the wood! This is really the first spoon tutorial I've watched that encourages the carver to listen to the wood rather than just force it into compliance. Now to sharpen all my tools!
A handmade, wooden spoon used to be my FAVORITE wedding present; no kidding. 20 years down the line, when toasters, mixers, and silverware is broken and lost, that old spoon will still be in the kitchen sliding drawer, accompanied by a "wonder where he is now?" cheers...rr Normandy, France
I totally agree! I love thinking about my spoons and the many kitchens they live in, the meals they help prepare, and the people that gather to eat them.
Skillfully done and an amusing application of Buzz Lightyear. When I teach wood turning, I recommend using all common senses except taste. In this case, the carving sound tells a story about the wood, grain and the cutting edges even though it is behind the narration and music.
Whayhay! Someone else who prefers gouges to hook knives for the bowl. I have hook/spoon knives, but I also have Swiss gouges and I find they are sooo much nicer for shaping the bowl. Each to their own.
Great video. I've been bodging for abiut 5 years now and the favourite finish I've found is just burnishing the spoons with a collection of differently shaped pebbles from the beach. Works really well with Ash keeps the wood a lovely white colour .
@Anne of All trades. Channels on the net that are dedicated to trades are generaly quite bad at greenwood working. Obviously, it is not your case. You own the tools and know how to used them. Good work to get the attention on this wonderful hobby.
Very nice looking spoon, I agree the hardest part of spoon carving (from my limited experience) is in the transitions where the grain changes direction so often. I really liked how you explained the way to deal with these problematic areas, thanks for sharing!🙌
Awesome spoon there Anne. nice knife techniques. now all you need is some kolrosing on the spoon. One tool you can make yourself is a carving apron--piece of wood on a rope to hang around your neck so it covers your sternum when you are carving at yourself. and keeps the spoon from digging into you. some of these are slightly cupped so it traps the work to the center. thanks as always for sharing your wonderful work with us all.
What a fantastic video...and your vibe is top notch to boot. Just started spoon carving 3 days ago and I'm so excited. Its not just enjoyable but helps with my PTSD. Keeps my mind, body and creativity going. Your video was absokutkey inspiring and I truly learned a ton. Thanks so much. Subscriber now!!
Thanks so much for the encouragement! I have so many friends with PTSD who have taken up working with their hands and have seen so much improvement. It feels good to get our bodies moving, our minds occupied, and have a tangible result from our labor! Keep carving, reach out if you ever have questions!
I just started making my own spatulas and spoons. Your explanations for the grain made a lot of sense and cleared up what I was doing wrong, I’m exited to try again tmr. Great vid keep up the good work 👍
Love the explanations on the grain. I remember 4 spoons. Stirring Tasting Swatting And the medicine dose spoon which looked like the others but seemed to hold a pint of castor oil.
Hi Anne very good video on using hand tools and using them safely. I have several spoke shaves. All my carving tools belonged to my grandfather, they are English Sheffield steel they hold an edge well. When I use them they always remind me of my dear old grandpar using them. Carving is skill and a whole lot of patience. Well done Anne. Ashleigh 💖

alexandradeahl I can’t remember if it’s a lie Nielsen or lee valley in this video, I have and use both fairly interchangeably. I prefer a curved bottom shave.
Haha you earned a thumbs up for not editing out the mistake of saying knees instead of elbows. Not only did you leave it in, you made a joke out of it. More I see, more impressive you are.
Anne, I’m a new subscriber and enjoy your videos, which are both informative but easy to understand and appreciate due to your style of presentation. Looking forward to your future videos.
Loved the video. It was informative and entertaining both. New video suggestion: I would like to see you play some of the other instruments you mentioned. Especially the violin.
I carved a “love spoon” last year and it took me about three months! Of course it was a lot more intricate (Celtic knots and roses!) and not intended for use in spaghetti sauce. lol I enjoy your instruction style, clear and detailed with a little humor mixed in. My dad was my teacher. I saw this star he had carved and I was like “how did you do that?!” He grabbed a cube of wood, drew an X on each side, handed it to me and said “now cut away everything that isn’t an X.” 😅👌
I may have to resort to making a bunch of utensils like this soon. During our move to the new house it seems we have somehow misplaced all of our silverware and kitchen utensils. Makes cooking and eating a bit interesting to say the least. Plastic forks and spoons are saving us for now, but need to do something soon. haha Great video and I love how informative and easy to understand your content is!
Very well done. I haven't carved any spoons yet, but my wife wants me to so it will be a thing. :) I make archtop guitars which take a lot of carving so have the tools to do so other than the very expensive scorp. I have tools that will do the same thing. Really enjoyed your video.
Would love to see a slotted spoon and laddle version of this tutorial. I always see spoons and spatulas, but only see laddles from wood turners and have yet to see a hand carved slotted spoon (not drilled holes).
Hey from this Texas gramma. So helpful. I have wood spoons that the handles are thick and I’m on a mission to thin them down so they fit my crock holder. The spoons are measuring spoons (Amazon). I have always loved how wood feels and smells. But I know where to start. New subscriber.....

Just liberated a nice log of sweet gum wood from the forest in my backyard can’t wait to find the spoon inside it!
Carving hard maple dry! I'm Highly impressed! Tough Task there! Good Job!👍👍

Not overdoing the finish as the spoon has stirring times ahead. Well said. Balance between a showpiece and an implement. And now I'm hungry.
