As good and powerful as this song is If I Can Dream is Elvis' greatest song and performance by far! Its in honor of Dr. King.

I’m 51 years old and when I was in my 20s I knew Elvis was a good singer. It wasn’t until the last 10 years that I realized that he was from another planet. He was so insanely talented.
Elvis knew what it was like growing up in the ghetto he grew up in tupelo ms and lived in a 2 room shot gun shack that his dad built for them. There were days his family didn't even have drinking water or food.. he grew up in a mostly black community..but he never forgot where he came from.

My Mother was arrested at 9mths pregnant (w me😊) while marching w MLK in front of a TN restaurant that didn’t allow blacks to dine inside. This was her 2nd favorite Elvis song, the 1st being If I Can Dream (a tribute to MLK- look for the 68 Special white suit version) & the 3rd was Walk A Mile In My Shoes (look for the live w story version). All 3 were played often & early in our home- not just songs, but mantras… Models by which my parents raised myself & my siblings. How very blessed we were!!!❤️🙏🏼
Mac Davis who wrote the song originally took it to the late GREAT triple threat African American talent Sammy Davis Jr. He said- I’m sorry, I can’t sing this song. I don’t know how; I’ve never lived this way. But I do know who has… Take it to my friend Elvis Presley. And the rest as they say is history.

And I should have added- while Elvis didn’t write the song, in the end (literally) he stepped in on arrangement! That final ‘…and his Mama cries…’ was not in Davis’ original arrangement. Elvis wanted to add it- felt it *needed* to be added. Davis would later say he wasn’t so sure, but Elvis persisted & insisted, and- ‘he was RIGHT!’ Those 4 words repeated at the end drive home the cyclical creature that is the ghetto. For me, it is a gut punch.

This one gets to me my mom grew up very poor in two and three room shacks without running water and knows what it's like to go hungry for days with her eight brothers and sisters.
In the Ghetto. Where to begin. So NO ONE would record this Mac Davis song IN THE GHETTO as it was too raw, especially during the race riots in the 1960s. A top RCA executive said we can't release it. Elvis heard it and said, "That's my next single, son" and walked away. The great Sammy Davis Jr famously turned it down. Sammy stated that he felt that he could not record it because he didn't grow up in a ghetto, but that he know someone who did (who understood growing up poor and hungry, and understood the worst parts of the Great Depression and segregation), Elvis Presley.
Only Elvis was willing to risk his career and life to get that record on the air-waves. Only Elvis could have performed it and gotten the radio play when it came out in the late 1960's, during the Civil Rights Movement. A decade of very famous and tragic assassinations. JFK, Robert Kennedy, Dr Martin Luther King. So Elvis knew the risks. He made it his platform. One of his major public statements on the issues of racism and poverty. Without uttering a single press release or public statement. Not a single political word or comment. Not a single talk show to sell people on his ideals. He spoke solely through his music and back stage actions when the lights and cameras were off. Elvis was a strong supporter of the Civil Rights Movement long before he became famous. Amazing power of song by a very brave and loving human being.

I was just a baby when Elvis Presley died, but I grew up watching his movies on TV and listening to his music on the radio and on my mom's records, and this is 100% my absolute favorite song by him. He didn't write the song but it's so powerful when he sings it. I always loved it because I myself grew up very poor, and this could so easily have happened to me or to somebody I love, like my cousins, who've been in and out of jail and rehab more times than I can count, and my sister who stayed in an abusive relationship for way longer than she should have because she couldn't afford to take care of her kids if she left him. In fact, this song is probably one of the reasons I'm a social worker now. Because it's so powerful. And, sadly, because almost nothing has changed since the song came out in 1968.

RIP Mac Davis, a great song writer and singer in his own right. Elvis didn't write songs period. Elvis even said himself, "I've never even had an idea for a song".
I think Mac, himself, was the original recorder of the song.
Thanks from a third generation Elvis fan. I used to sing this to my kids as a lullaby. My mom sung it to me, hopefully one day my kids will sing this song to my grandkids. Thanks for keeping Elvis alive in 2022
A great country artist and songwriter named Mac Davis wrote and recorded this song.
One of Mac Davis' most well known songs that Mac recorded is "It's Hard to Be Humble". Which is a funny song. He had a good sense of humor. Another really good song by him is "Don't Get Hooked On Me".
Mac passed away about 2 years ago, unfortunately.
Mac Davis originally wrote this song for the Righteous Brothers who turned it down saying it would be bad for their image

He didn't have to write songs. Every song writer wanted him to sing their songs and there are thousands to choose from and he made each one a great song to enjoy.

I remember when that song came out. The song was written by Mac Davis. Mac wrote three or four songs Elvis recorded.
It's all about the cycle of poverty. The struggle today is the same as it was 60+ years ago. It never ends.

all those songs back then were around 3 mins tops. Pre digital and social media days Top 40 radio ruled and they had to fit as many songs between commercial breaks as possible.
Credit must go to Mac Davis who wrote this and many songs for Elvis, and became a performer as well. He was inspired by his own experience having a African American boy for a friend in Lubbock Texas [his dad worked with the boy's father]. But he never understood why the boy lived in such dire conditions worse than his own white neighborhood being a poor section of town. so Elvis didn't tell the story of own, but close, very similar experiences as Mac. BTW-Whitney Houston's mom, Cissy, is one of the background singers...the Sweet Inspirations.

Yes Miaaa, it is a powerful message and song. It has it's own story and Elvis was moved to not just write and perform the song but to do all he could to end the stigmatism of life in the ghetto. Not just to raise awareness but to raise money and then hopes of all people to rise above. As he grew up in Memphis he saw all this in a changing world and did what he could and few people give him credit.
Mr. Martin Luther King didn't speak for all to have America's Freedoms. He spoke for the Black men and Woman. Not that Mr. King was uncaring, he could admittedly only do for his own people and he did just that. Like a soldier in war, Mr. King gave his life so others would live free. It's a shame so few grab the chance and fewer even try to rise above.
As a Dad of a Black Son and a Grandpa of Black Grandchildren, I cannot fight their fights, but I do have their back and I'll jump right in when asked.
Elvis Presley did this song and many others about lifting the human spirit above conditions to find richness in God.

Wow that's interesting. And if you like this, you might really like if I can dream, the tribute to Martin Luther King that was the finale to his 1968 Comeback Special on television. They wanted him to do a Christmas song but he chose to do that instead because he was so broken up and mainly about the assassination of Dr King but also just the racial strife and Chaos of the time and also the assassination of Bobby Kennedy and it was just such a crazy time. I was a little kid for that and I never even saw this performance until a year ago. Thanks youtube! He's got two different versions but the one that most people react to and the one that most people consider to be one of his most iconic performances ever is the so-called white suit red tie version. But but this song in the ghetto, just like if I can dream, we're really watershed moments because here you've got a white guy with immense popularity and he bucks management and everything else and even the record label to do these racially conscious songs. This song for example, was first offered to a couple other people and they wouldn't touch it with a 10-ft pole. Then it was offered to Sammy Davis Jr and he really wanted to do it but he just didn't feel like he could do it. But he recommended it to Elvis and Elvis said screw it I'm doing it, against the advice of a lot of people and it worked, that's Elvis he can make that kind of thing work. That's the background he came from and he never forgot it. And finally, by the end of the reaction I realized that your hair was reminding me of Michael Jackson at a certain phase, except you're a lot prettier, which is really saying something because Michael Jackson was fairly pretty for a guy, laugh.
And after 50 years, the cycle still continues today.
The part I find interesting is that Elvis never says what race they are.
So why do everyone just assume that if they live in the GETTO they are black.
