What a man Elvis was! I'll never stop being blown away by this fantastic human being... :D
Elvis was born in a 1 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. He always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. But he was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (th-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/w-d-xo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.
Also, Elvis's maternal grandparents were 1st cousins.
You don't mention that Elvis was also part Jewish and paid homage to his Jewish ancestry. I believe there is a Jewish star by one of his family member's tombstone. Definitely the Native part shows in Elvis's hair. He also had French and German ancestry.

Another stellar performance. And, yes, he was born in total poverty and grew up in the poor side of town. But that gifted him with the music of the gospel and blues music of the neighborhood and he was welcomed into their churches because he loved the music so deeply. It shows.
Elvis grew up dirt poor, in Tupelo Missisippi, his black friends were sorry for him, he went to church with them. He went against his manager to do this song, it was too lmportant to him, though people were sure doing this, would kill his career. It used to be basically illegal to film him from the waist down, the wowsers said his hip wiggling was from the devil.
Oh yeah! the way he moved and danced was scandalous, especially when he was starting out in the 50s! My mom actually saw him in concert back then she was only 14 in 1956 her mom took her and her little boyfriend to see him when he was in Arkansas. She screamed over Elvis so much, her boyfriend got jealous and broke up with her the next day! 😂😂😂

The song wasn't Elvis' idea, but he loved it. It was Mac Davis who wrote this, influenced by his childhood in Texas, separated from the African American community across the tracks, but yet had an African American friend that was a child of his dad's co-worker, he used to play with after school. He couldn't understand as a child why the African American s community was treated so poorly etc. he was just a kid. This song was relevant then c a. 1970 and still is. That makes me sad. The day we don't need a song like this because everything is right....well that will be a day of glory. I was a white student and school teacher of a diverse population.

He could sing just about anything he wanted to. My mom was a huge fan. She had all his Albums, his movies, tapestry, plates and spoons. Anything she could find she would get.

Just so no one misunderstands, Cissy Houston is not in this vid (filmed Aug. 13, 1970, at the International Hotel, in Vegas, for the documentary, Elvis: That’s the Way It Is). Cissy was with Elvis for just 5 weeks, ending Aug. 28, 1969 (1 week rehearsal & 4 weeks of shows). She had a solo contract & left the Sweet Inspirations to work on her solo career & spend more time home with her children. Of her brief time with Elvis, she said; “He was wonderful” “I loved him” “He was such a gentleman” & “so good looking, you didn’t even want to look nowhere else.”
Great song from the later part of Elvis's career. I saw some other people mention to check out the trailer for the new Elvis biopic movie coming out & I agree ... saw it as a preview with Batman and it gave me chills. Can't wait to see the whole thing this summer.

I recommend the Gospel production number from his 1968 Comeback TV Special. Darlene Love was one of the background singers. You WON’T be disappointed. He loved Gospel music.

Back in the 50s/60s - Elvis wasn't shown below the waste because of his gyrations - so the leg movement was a pretty significant catch!! lol
Elvis had two really big songs that were civil rights themed. This one and the powefully amazing "If I Can Dream". Elvis was very much aware of the plight of the poor and underpriviledged, be it of any race.
Yall should listen to the studio version of this. I think its better. As awesome as Elvis was live during this period, his vocals were many times rushed and the song hurried. I think he just had so much energy that he sped things up. Still a great performance.
Its funny you noticed Elvis looking back at the backup singers. What Elvis was doing there is connecting with them. He was a gospel singing man and his backup singers had that vibe. It was a spiritual experience for Elvis. He was appreciating them and acknowledging them more so than checkin them.
A little side note about his back up singers. The first were the Jordanaires. In his early years. All men. Then later he others such as these ladies and even The Imperials (way popular gospel group in the 70s-90s)
Here is the thing though. Elvis would listen to a playback of a song he was recording and many times tell the engineer that the back up singers needed to be turned up.
Here was "Elvis" one of the greatest voices of all time and he wanted the backup singers to be turned up to match and even sometimes louder than his own beautiful voice.
Thats humble man. That is giving. But he loved the voices around him that were singing. He admired them as much as they admited him vocally and personally.
I get it. Im a singer. Have sang in choirs and groups with harmony all my life. There is a oneness when you sing with a group. Its like its one big voice. Its like pieces missing in your heart that get filled when you hear the blending of other singers with your own.
When I was singing with choirs at a competetive level I was the leader and one of the main voices. Not bragging just saying that to say this: I would sometimes just stop singing and mouth the words to listen to all the voices around me. Sounded like I was in the middle of angels singing. One of my friends asked me once if I stopped singing and why? I just said "Because it is great to sing with this choir but sometimes in order to sing better you have to listen and hear what the other voices are doing and need"
All that is to say Im sure Elvis had that same connection with the backup singers here.. "The Sweet Inspirations" ..good name for them. They inspired Elvis as much as he did them.

Sir EP did not write these songs but he wanted to sing these songs because it delivered the messages about injustice, being poor etc. He snag these songs in Las Vegas to the people from all over the world who came to see him. No one else had the guts to do these songs at time of segregations etc. That look is obviously he in tune with all the beats and they gotta do it right😁
I read somewhere, can't remember where, so I can't attest to the veracity of this. Elvis was like a stage director. He would have a movement or a look and that sent a signal to his band. We didn't think much of it, but that's why his songs were so tight.

I would however beside Sir called him King of Hearts. And you don't have to be knighted to be called Sir.
