A lot of farmers around here seem to dumping forward lambs into the store market at the moment, we have been dry but they have still been getting great money.
I used to have a huge bloat problem, I once lost 7 cattle in one day. Then bloat blocks came out and I never lost an animal in a paddock with a block in, then they stopped selling them. I ended up bailing (round bales) my toppings, so not much quality, no clovers just ryegrass stems . I used to use them in the spring to balance the feed, just threw a bale over the fence, the cattle could eat as much as they wanted . They chomped into the round bales even when feed was at it's best in Oct and Nov, they self balanced their feed input. This got rid of most of my bloat, not all but a huge help. Direct drilling is no longer cheap, aye. Getting marginal with present returns?
That’s a good idea. I’ve had a few people say to put hay in the paddocks. And we have a friend who puts balage in with many different classes of animals to help with digestion and as you say they self regulate. True, still relatively cheap compared to working paddocks
Will you spray out the chicory next autumn and drill in an annual grass again? I see some people just undersow italian and get another year out of it. Never tried it but interested in how that would compare
We usually try to get 18 months out of it to reduce costs. If we did that we would get better production we try to keep the weeds out of it by giving it a grass spray in June. It does keep going okay at least in the second spring but usually dies out pretty quick by the time it’s 15months. The benefit of having it in the second spring is being able to put ewes and lambs on it from August until lamb draft. If we spray out every 6 months and undersow it’s not the right timing to be able to Kill PRIME Off MUM off of those paddocks. Our neighbours rate undersowing every 6months and if we had our own gear and could reduce sowing and spraying cost we probably would consider it more.
What a cool kit that is!

Does it matter if you have the odd rock in your paddock with those seed drills?
No I don’t think so, I think the machines are fairly resilient
What's wrong with the springtail?
They suck the leaves and suppress the crop
@HillCountryFarmer interesting. They are a very important insect in biological production. They love my compost
Classic isn’t

That’s it!
