Sheep and Beef farming in the central North Island of NZ. (Gumboot country)
The Ultimate New Zealand Docking Video
Docking Mixed Aged (2-5Year Olds) and 2ths (1 Year Olds) 2024.
I hope you enjoy this insight into my day and docking/Tailing. Thanks for watching!
I'm Will Duncan and I farm on my Family's Hill Country Sheep and Beef Farm in the Rangitikei District of New Zealand, we are farming 2500 Ewes 80 Cows and trade 100 steers.
I hope to bring insight of what we do to the consumer, ultimately we're doing this for you. New Zealand Lamb is a very nutritionally dense food that has a high amount of fat which is paramount to a healthy diet as well as being a "superfood" it has a very low environmental impact.
The rugged terrain of this country means that it is limited to certain land uses, Kiwi's have been developing a sustainable and highly productive land use over two centuries now. Sheep have proven to be very productive and have a low impact on hills as steep as these. Good New Zealand farmers can produce in excess of 210KG of lamb per hectare per year with few imputs.
This process seems hard on the animals and although they don't enjoy being miss mothered they are amazing how they can find each other and get back to normality in only a few hours.
The results were okay but I will strive todo better each year and set my ewes up for success. This year the lambing conditions were good so I am surprised to have such a gap between scanning and docking percentages.
The lambs look well and very few came in with any kind of deformity. The only comment on the cradle (Docking shoot) was that there were plenty with turned eye lids which is a common thing but obviously prevalent this year.
Thanks to epidemicsound for the music.

Dead $2000 Steer, This is what I've done
มุมมอง 3.2K23 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
After loosing a 450kg steer to bloat I decided to give 40 of our best rising 2 year olds a bloat capsule and put them on the most risky pasture. I get the 44 steers back from Ohingaiti, they have been there now for 8 weeks eating kale. I give them a Copper, Selenium and pour on drench as well as a weigh. I hope you enjoy the Video!
Life In Spring, Sonny Bill Lambo too quick for me.
มุมมอง 1.8K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
4:10 - The big side step Its a quiet time at the moment between dockings. The earlies are growing and the Mixed Aged ewes are not quite finished lambing. I do some battening and find a calf that has not mothered up the way I'd like so they are taken to the yards. I think the cow was happy to get some real feed into her. Sonny Bill lambo does some impressive foot work to get away from being capt...

If your not into watching Farming and its processes please don't. For some this practice seems cruel but for the small amount of pain there is a big reward. We dock our early lambs and it gives us another glimpse of the production we will get this year. Scanning in these girls was back by 8% at (160%) and back 15% from where I'd like to be, but I am pleased to have only lost 20% from scanning u...

The final process before these girls have their lambs is to give them a clostridial vaccine. A Long Acting Drench (LA Drench) is also given to the young girls. This is usually a moderately large job but this year because I spread these girls out early it took a little longer with all the mustering involved. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the video.
Following Trends - Matching the growth curve.
มุมมอง 2.6Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I attempt to explain the growth curve and how our stock at lambing and calving time increase their pasture intake as the pasture increases in growth per day. The hills are looking good and we even have our first Hill Country Lambs on the ground. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the video and it provokes thought and comments. Cheers, Will

Farmers anxiety - Before you get scanning results.
มุมมอง 3.2K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Another lot of scanning! We scan our ewes so that we don't carry any dry ewes through the winter when feed is as scarce as hens teeth and every blade of grass is counted for. It also gives us the ability to feed ewes with more than one lamb better. Its an exciting time of the year and this year although our results were back Im not unhappy with the season so far. Cool video mate. Thanks
Cheers!
this is an awesome video, thank you for sharing it and your knowledge
Thanks very much! Cheers for watching!
Great job! Bit of an expert at everything when your a farmer.
Yeah I wouldn’t say expert more like have a go Harry😅. Cheers
Great scenic shots plus all the action of docking. Showcases how productuve your farm is on very steep country.
Cheers!
That lamb that was missed….do you go looking for it or just let it be?
If I miss them then they find their mother when the mob goes back to the paddock. It depends some that were missed I gathered up but some I left.
What's the scratch for mat. Love watching those dogs of yours working. Cheers
It’s for Scabby mouth, a parapox virus. It causes scabs around the mouth and can cause lambs to struggle to eat or suckle.
Tailing 😂
Docking 😅
Steers are looking good! Do you give them salt/mineral block in the paddock too or is a copper and selenium jab sufficient? I've just been using mineral blocks so far but a lot gets wasted and not sure how effective they are.
We don’t use mineral blocks for the steers, I don’t really know the studies behind copper and selenium but it depends on your soils and your location. I know inadequate copper levels in cattle can reduce growth rates as well as impaired reproduction in cows. I would be interested to get some post mortem biopsies done to know if we are giving enough, maybe you could also try that. We just know if you put it under the skin they’ve got it, there are no excuses after that.
Are there other breeds of cattle less susceptible to bloating?
I believe anything with dairy genetics will be less susceptible. The theory is that Angus haven’t been bred to eat high energy feed but all dairy animals do is eat feed with a high energy and clover content so the ones that get bloat have been culled centuries ago. But at the moment I’m happy with Angus cattle, we receive a premium at slaughter and the yield (Live-weight to Carcass weight) is a few percent higher. (56-57%)
@@HillCountryFarmer Thanks for the reply!
Those yards look really well designed, able to handle big stock easily. Great video
That is the beauty of them, steel and concrete, haven’t had to fix a rail since they were constructed! Cheers!
Boys look like they starting to put the beef on now coats are starting to shine 🤙
Good work mate
Cheers!
Thanks for the video some of the steers look a bit highly strung
They do. They’re all pretty respectful but I find a few of those speckled parks hard to trust on their own.
Putting those capsules in looks like a lot of wrestling! That’s a young man’s game!
Love watching your videos and learning more about farming
Cheers mate!
Beautiful cattle 👍👏🇳🇴
Thanks!
How does the cattle yard work? Is it shared with other farmers? I couldn’t se that working here (Wales) with all the rules and regulations we have with animals 🙄
Oh right, yes we share them with one neighbour. I guess we don’t have a lot of disease here that spreads easily. BVD, lepto and TB are probably our biggest concerns.
Really enjoy your videos, keep them coming. Lovely farm with great infrastructure. What’s the name of the fencing Chanel?
Thanks mate! Will do! I tried looking but couldn’t find it, I’ll have another look
Great video What do you do with all the eggs 👌
Cheers, we sell them locally
Great video, I like the kaiwaka jackets, we have had ours for about 10 years and they are made in NZ👌
Yeah good aren’t they, I think they will repair them for free too
LOved seeing Paddy the horse arrive safely, thanks Will for putting that in! And good job on the battening!
Thanks! Yeah no worries. Happy horse!
If they don’t drink from a quarter it will dry up, or you can end up with a bottle titted cow which are as handy as an ashtray on a motorbike
Haha. Okay thanks
How old is your baby?
She’s 3 months
Really enjoyed this snapshot into the random jobs you have and some other sides of your life/the farm. Also always love the dogs.
Cheers!
I like your video keep them coming matee
Thanks mate
As a dairy farmer I would say dairying on the flats would be the most profitable haha. Only just discovered your channel and it's great to watch how other livestock farmers are getting on in NZ. Thoroughly enjoying watching your back catalogue of videos.
Fair enough I bet it is, the only other thing I can think of could be velvet or venison, I’m just not that keen on working with deer. Thanks very much!
Thank you always a good watch
Cheers!
Hi Will, nice to meet you again. Are your farm need some hands or worker. I tried to find a way to get a working visa and move to NZ.
Hey Mate, We’re pretty good for Staff at the moment. These farms currently struggle to be profitable with Mutton and lamb prices so low. It’s a hard time to find work here. Dairy farming has proven that it’s profitable through a hard economy, there could be positions in the dairy industry as they are projected to have a very good up coming season. I don’t know how you would go about finding work with them but you could start looking on the Dairy NZ site. Best of luck, Will.
After having worked 8 years on a NW Qld cattle station, I’m amazed how over engineered our yards are in NZ , you definitely don’t need all those rails, to hold cattle in yards
Nice to have though don’t you think? I was able todo three jobs on my own safely. And if I had wanted I could have drafted them into three very even lines. I do agree with you our yards are over engineered but still so much more usable than most in NZ.
Put a bale of hay in any paddock if you’re afraid of bloat
Yeah I’ve heard that helps hugely, although I’d need to have a good way of feeding it. One person I know feeds straw to his sheep all winter long to help with digestion and that was the first thing my grandfather said when I talk to him about bloat, put a bale of straw in there
@@HillCountryFarmer we used to just feed some rough hay in bad bloat paddocks, when we put cattle in them, if the clover was really evident, and a bit of moisture in the air, this was before big bale days, I would just have a bale available in the paddock
Great video as always 👌
Thanks mate!
Rumensin is also good for energy aswell as bloat prevention as you say. We use it on dairy farm. Put it in dosatron daily.
Oh okay, thanks!
How much are your yearlings weighing this time of year?
Good question. I don’t think they will be any more than 300 kg. I need to get them in for a drench. I’ll find out then. Mid October last year they were 330
Good to see your getting potentially better prices for your beef. There is a good demand for it at the moment.
That’s it, we need it!
Be a good effort to put that much weight on them in that time frame Your going to need quality, quantity and pretty flat country to pull that off I'd think
True, to average 2.7-3kg/day for that amount of time will be a challenge but I do have all three of those.
Haha! That was very entertaining, but you got there in the end. Pup looks very excited to be at work! No Gus, please don't drink from the s*** pond :( The fields look nice and green with heaps to eat. Do you plant any other types amongst the normal grass and clover?
Two of those paddocks are annual grasses (Tetraploid). They’re all sowed with clover. We only really use a single grass type with white and red clover.
That should get em going and start piling the weight on them surprising how fast beefies pile the weight on especially being adlib like they are cheers for the vid 🤙
Thanks for watching! They’re looking like they’re already growing!
had a neighbor with an Angus stud, did some bloods on the stores and they were still low in copper after the first 2ml shot and it was only after the 2nd jab they started to move, really affects the weight gain aye, don't know if you've ever tried the multi-min injection, not cheap but it works wonders on cattle after any periods of stress, i.e winter, weaning etc. did you under sow some annuals into those pastures, some really big leaf going on. our soil temp already at 13.9 degrees
No I haven’t, I feel like I’ve always been onto Copper supplementation so haven’t seen the full effects of not using it but I’m sure it makes a big difference. It is a good point, maybe I should be getting some biopsy’s done at slaughter to make sure our program is upto scratch. We put “Jivet” (Annual Rye Grass) in two of those paddocks and they will be resown in the next 6-8weeks. Very thick leaf isn’t it!
Nice thank you I like the cattle your yards and the bonus with the dog work
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video.
Cheers for the support!
Do you have dorpers? Can you transport to india?
We don’t sorry mate, we can’t export live animals from NZ I believe.
Your prices are behind here i Gippsland Australia. I would have thought you would sell at Taihape
Yeah prices have improved since autumn. The Taihape sale yards have been pulled down unfortunately. Because Feilding is so large and relatively close, all of our store stock is sent there.
My daughter tells me she met you last week when you were showing some young guys the ropes. She's with beef and Lamb.
Hey Andrew, I actually don’t recall sorry. Where was this? Sometimes I have a memory of a goldfish😅
Obviously I am not a farmer but I just can’t help myself, I have to ask …. That must bloody hurt when the lambs are docked. 😳
Yeah I think it must. It’s amazing how they are fairly oblivious, they’re much more concerned with making sure they find their mother. I’ve found 1 dead since docking (9 days ago) and that didn’t look to be related to docking. Some will be playing the next day. The iron is so hot it seals the scar and must numb the nerves. Cheers for watching!
