  • Some new art supplies arrive that I have been wanting to test out for a while now. Daniel Smith Watercolor Sticks provide a great contrast in mark making for watercolour artwork and sketchbook play, so join me as I pull out my sketchbook and create a little abstract floral. I colour swatch a selection of colours like Blue, Quinacridone Gold, Undersea green, Olive green, Green gold and Opera Pink. So what do I think of them and will I buy them again?
    What do you think of them, please let me know in the comments below...

    Congrats! I use the DS watercolor sticks as plain old watercolor. I just slice off a chunk and stuff it in a pan. I hate the way they feel when used dry, or even wet when applied to paper. They are a really cost effective way to buy watercolor tho! You mentioned they were made in the UK but they are actually a US (Seattle) based company, where they were first created by Dani Smith in 1976. In fact, they are still in Seattle. Unfortunately they no longer give tours because they are just over an hour from me. I would love, love, love to go on one!

      What a great and cost effective way to use them, I never thought of that! Thanks so much for sharing. I tried to buy colours that I didn’t have in my current travel palette and cutting off a piece and popping it in a pan will be great! Thank you. And thanks for the info about the brand, it would be awesome to do a tour, I do hope you get to do one of those sometime should they start to offer them again. It would be so interesting. Appreciate all the great feedback, thank you.

      I love the sticks and use them in the same way. Or I just put them in the Daniel Smith case made for them and wet them and transfer the pigment to my gode/palette when I’m painting. But I use them like a normal watercolor. They are very cost effective. Love them because of this 😊

      That’s what I was going to say. These don’t work well as art sticks. They are for those who hate dealing with messy watercolor tubes, that get stuck lids, and so you can use every bit of the watercolor. Also great for travel as they aren’t liquid. Just slide off a piece and stick in a pan.

    I have about 12 of the sticks. When they have them on sale, they are a fantastic deal. You can cut them and slip them into a half or full pan. You can get 5 half pans from one stick! I bought the primatek line last week. Three of them I love and two, I'm a bit disappointed. The sodolite and hematite were very weak, but I've heard these two colors are weak in the tubes also. But the standard colors are fantastic. I'm switching over to the sticks in as many colors as are available. Why should I deal with messy, exploding and leaky tubes if I don't have to. Plus they are easy to share with my water color class friends!

      This is such a great way to use them and so economical too! I will definitely be using the Opera Pink like this and I will be waiting patiently for them to go on sale again so that I can stock up on some more colours. I LOVE that you see this as a way to share with others…how kind and generous of you, I love that!❤️

    I'm #629, Heidi, & 65 years young! I recently cut off all of my hair to embrace my grays & silvers, weary of the monthly hair coloring. I began watercolor painting in 2017 for the first time in my life, & truly believe Payne's Gray (Winsor & Newton is the BEST PG!) enabled me to "act my age," & love my short silver/brown hair. Finding your channel was the loveliest thing that happened to this end, & I hope that your health continues to get better & better! Thank you for your kindness & good spirits. :)

      @@heidishedlock-acreativelife I have all of these Daniel Smith watercolors but have never tried them in the stick form. I think they would be great for plain air which I don’t do. Why didn’t you include a standard yellow color?

    • @heidishedlock-acreativelife
      @heidishedlock-acreativelife  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think I chose the Quin. Gold as the yellow because I was trying to find colours that were a bit different to the simple traveling watercolour palette that I take with me if I am traveling. My small set of watercolour pans has a standard yellow and red in it so I think I was looking for colours that may be a little different. I also bought these on sale and a few of the colours were already sold out so that may also have limited my choices so I tried to find something from each side of the colour wheel. I also have some of the Daniel Smith tubes and LOVE them, so was eager to try these. Unfortunately Daniel Smith supplies are quite expensive in South Africa because of import costs. But they are definitely a good investment.

    Congratulations! You are now at 615! I enjoyed your enthusiasm while showing these and their many uses. I have one more suggestion: free nd a textured plastic sheet (like those used in filing folders) or a sheet of acetate or a stamping acrylic bloc. You can scribble on the surface with the stick to put some pigment there. Pick up the colour with a wet brush - you can also scribble two colours and mix them on the surface before taking the colour to the painting. I really enjoyed your loose flowers too!

      @@heidishedlock-acreativelife I too use them in this way. In South Africa, as in America and Europe are the sticks all the same price? When I saw them, I realised I could purchase the most expensive series for the same price as series 1. Daniel Smith is generally overpriced in the UK, and so it feels great to cut a piece off and place it in a full sized pan, adding a few drops of water around it, then set aside to dry. This prevents the piece you cut from moving around as your brush touches it. Alternatively, cut it to the exact size and squish it down into your pan, and it will never move. A seriously economical way to purchase the more fancy/expensive colours in their range. They cost £12 each, but like you, I wait for a sale to scoop up my favourites.

    I clicked on because I've never seen the Daniel Smith Watercolor Sticks.

      I had never seen them before either until I saw another artist using them and then I was so curious. I’m glad I gave them a try, the pigment quality is great!

    I have a lot of Daniel Smith watercolors but I keep a white Daniel Smith watercolor stick in my palette instead of a pan of gouache.

    Look like oil pastels as you use them in sticks, not brush on. So, maybe nerd a smoother but strong surface?

      They look like oil pastels but feel nothing like them, I was surprised to find out that they felt completely different. I thought they night even feel like a neocolor but they don’t. They have a unique texture. I am sure they would be lovely on a smooth and stronger paper too.

      @@heidishedlock-acreativelife thanks for info! That's the hard part of watching on video over actual trying, the appearance on some of the strokes reminded me of oil pastels, and honestly--if they were the same texture I wouldn't consider them. Oil pastels and me are like opposite planets. But I might order a few of these when I am into a "let's try something new" phase again. Chalk type crayons and pencils and sticks are lovely for me, love watercolor pencils too. So yeah, this is intriguing.

      @@thesilverpen you should definitely give them a try then. Maybe order just one in a colour you know you will use and try it out. Let me know what you think of them if you do. I also saw them being used online and was intrigued. I think I will definitely buy a few more colours when I see them go on sale again.

    Thanks for sharing this exploration. I haven't tried them but I do use the Neocolor 2. Would you say these are basically the same?

      I was expecting them to feel like the Neocolor ll but they are completely different. The Neocolor feel like a crayon when you draw with them, these feel completely different, more tactile and textured on the page and when you dissolve them with water they are just like a watercolor. I’ve done more research and will do a follow up video, they are just pigment and gum Arabic so they are as good as a watercolor pan just in stick form. The colors are really intense. I would suggest buying just one and giving it a try! I’m sure you will love it!

    Are they beter dan neo color 2??

    • @heidishedlock-acreativelife
      @heidishedlock-acreativelife  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They are like the opposite. Neocolor ll’s dissolve with water and Neocolor l’s don’t. So I don’t think one is better than the other, I love them both and use them depending on the technique or mark I want. For example if I’m still going to use wet materials like watercolour or ink and I want to keep the fresh mark I will use Neocolor l so that they don’t dissolve or loose the mark in the wet materials. If I want a watercolor or more painterly effect I will use the ll’s which will dissolve in the water or wet materials. I love them both for their different qualities.
