    Lovely haul video. I’ve not really used gouache, but those do look tempting. I’m hoping that by next year maybe there will be a Helen Cryer artist calendar that we can all buy? 😊

    Yay unboxing video, I love seeing all the treasures you get in the mail! Doesn't matter if it's mostly organizational items or if it's full of colorful paints/media, it's always a joy to watch.
    I finally figured out why I enjoy your videos so much. You show exactly what I want to see and how I want to see it. For example, in this video you show all the products you received and then you play with them. It's like christmas, open all your presents then play with them after. When it comes to the painting videos, sometimes you speed it up during the slow bits but sometimes you keep the normal time when showing how you paint a scene or how you add in finer details; I just absolutely love it.

    I just got my first DS watercolor stick two days ago. I wanted Piemontite so badly and the stick was by far the cheapest option. It was so worth getting - what a gorgeous color! That and the Roman Szmal October paint are perfect moody November colors. I chopped it into a half pan yesterday & it seems to work really well that way. I’m also finding it kind of handy to be able to quickly dissolve a thick concentration into a palette well. Definitely considering getting a few more sticks.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! How funny! I'd still like to get October too, but it was out of stock last time I looked.
      I definitely like the idea of dissolving them into a palette too, as a quick way of re-wetting.

    I would love to try the holbein gouache. I am in love whit my himi miya gouache 56 colour set. I don,t wanna let go of this set. But i wanna try disiner gouache. I hope i wrote it right and i don,t know if i should try holbein gouache or winsor and Newton gouache. I love you,re art haul😊✌🏾👋🏾👍🏾😁🎨

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you will find either Holbein or Winsor & Newton Gouaches a wonderful step up from the Himi (though they are very cute) - I think you'd find them so much more pigmented and rich. I would say that you should go for which ever are cheapest for you to get locally, unless them being lightfast matters to you. I think the W&N ones have better lightfast ratings.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, do you have any watercolour paints? Another thing you can do is just buy the white Holbein or Winsor & Newton gouache, and use your watercolours to colour the white. This works really really well, unless you need really dark gouache colours.

    As usual, a very interesting and diverse collection of supplies! I'm most intrigued by the DS sticks. They aren't easy to find online in Canada; I'd love to find them in a little pack like the granulating set you found! Love all the books/calendar/zines for studying and inspiration as well.
    Now for my little (ok BIG) whine. I used to order from Jackson's quite frequently. However, over the last few months, they've updated their website and now I'm redirected to a "Canadian" website, rather than using the normal website with Canadian currency conversions. I *hate* the Canadian website. A lot of links are broken, the descriptions are not as detailed (cannot always see complete list of colours in sets) and a lot of items just are not available on the Canadian site. it's incredibly disappointing. I feel like I've lost a source for art supplies 😭. I've enjoyed many, many orders and shopping from Jackson's for years. They had excellent prices and great shipping prices to Canada. I was able to buy things that aren't available in Canada, it was fantastic... until now. I guess it's a money-saving win, less art supply shopping lol.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is incredibly sad!! I'm very sorry to hear this - I would find it enormously frustrating!

    • @FaithAnnNB
      @FaithAnnNB ปีที่แล้ว

      @@helencryer It is VERY frustrating, because for a moment, before being redirected to the Canadian site, you can see the number of items on the regular site (and lower Canadian prices). Being able to briefly see what you can no longer buy makes it more painful 😣.
      As an example, on the “regular” site, if I click on the Black Friday sale link, it indicates 272 items. As soon as I click to see the second page, I get redirected to the awful Canadian site, where there are initially 234 items. That’s not bad, but as soon as you click on the Canadian site everything refreshes and there are only 75 items total. From 272 to 75 is a pretty big disappointment. There’s no point in even going to the site anymore.

    OH GOODIE! Helen’s got watercolor sticks! Spoke to my eldest yesterday, she did some research and found a large art store in Scranton, (or rather a small town attached), that’s about 45 minutes away. I live in a very tiny town in the Poconos…not much close by.
    The reason for the art store, she and her beautiful wife, who has also started dabbling in watercolor, will be here for about 5 days next week-you know, “Black Friday” sales! My daughter says she just gets overwhelmed in these stores, and has pretty much stuck with everything I’ve sent her. We have several plans for when they are here. We’re hoping to find a really large sheet at the art store that we are all going to paint on together…kind of. I’m finishing my rooster later today on xuan paper, I’ve already done a bunny and a horse-my Children’s 3 Chinese birth animals, done in mostly ink-although I did add quite a bit of color to the rooster. We’re going to mount those on the large sheet, and…just something to do together for the girls to keep. Project #2 is some lampshades we’re going to coat with watercolor medium and then paint. At the store, I’ve made a list of things I’d like for Christmas..one us those DS sticks. My best friend got some a few years ago, uses them all the time, and still has 3/4 of each left. I DO need to check and see if they have the colors I want..I saw you have sodalite-so that answers that question! (Or one of them!). I was going to get tubes, but Liz, my friend, pitched a fit and told me to get the sticks-if they’re available. Looking for hematite violet, one of the transparent cool yellows, one of the Quins (PV42 I Think) and amethyst. My friend found one of the limited release Christmas green (Cascade with a bit of piney, Christmas-y smelling oil in it. She wanted to share it with me, but I’d already put a few drops of my favorite Christmas oil in a spray bottle, sprayed it on the paints to wet them..to be honest, I like mine better. It doesn’t seem to affect the paints or paper (one small one I did of my tiny town between hills-I sprayed the paper with it first for an underpainting-no problems!)
    I’ll send your link to my daughter!
    Ooohh…that Paynes gray is a pigment this pigment addict doesn’t have yet..looks a bit too blue though..it almost looks like a PB60 I have (a handmade one). It DOES also look like sodalite..but..even more blue?

      Aww, so nice having family visit, and I love hearing all your arty adventures!!
      It does seem like the sticks will last for quite a while - they seem very dense with pigment.
      I'm not sure if they're available in all those colours though. I think the whole available range is given on Jackson's website, which I linked to, if you want to check in advance.

    Your swatch collection looks great and useful! I'm way too lazy to do that, but it was very satisfying to see.
    Could you maybe make another video about the watercolor sticks by Daniel Smith (or any other brand) in the future to check up on how you feel about them? From what I saw, I think they would be too much hassle for me, so I just stick to my pans. - Which is why my sticks are still in the closet where I put them in like - oh dear! - two years ago. So I could use some more ideas on how to use them. :) Anyway, have a lovely Sunday!

      I think I'll probably use the sticks chopped up in half pans mainly - just a cheaper way of getting them. Haha! Another person was saying similar too, so we've just set up 'The Bad Art Sketchbook Club'! You're welcome to join! It involves having a sketchbook that doesn't become precious - it's SUPPOSED to look bad!!
      I immediately went and looked at these ones, and even put two in my basket, but then remembered I don't need any more! They look great though!

    Maimeri's Payne's grey is an odd one. My version has VAT blue 1, which is chemically the same as PB66. So, an indigo actually. Not lightfast though.

      Oh that's interesting, thanks! Yet listed as high lightfast on various websites, which is a shame.

    That PBk26 is very blue. I thought PBk26 was a deep grey. Strange!
