I definitely learned a lot from your video. 1. Hoop pots need to be checked every ten minutes. It may be more work but you'll get five times more crabs. If you hadn't made the video, the end result of just a few crabs would have been misinterpreted to mean there weren't very many crabs around. 2. I can envision that fishing with just two hoop traps, checking every ten minutes or less, one would work their ass off. But they would go home with a limit of crabs in less than an hour. 3. Heavy rebar construction is much better at keeping the crabs from lifting the trap off the bottom. Your lightweight trap was easily lifted by the crabs allowing them to feed from below. 3. A heavy-duty small-mesh bait box will allow your bait to last much longer. These crabs are amazing when it comes to robbing the bait.
We just went this past weekend to bandon. Took my boys over and we caught 12 at 7 inches Dungeness crab.you always have some awsome pulls no matter what pots you use
@@adong1 I actually befriended the crabs and they accepted me as their equal and took me to their underwater city. They don't have the internet there so I don't get online as often as I would normally.
PK, I did have a friend that had a live feed camera on his boat and he could sort of pick and choose what fish he would go after. It was fresh water so it was a clearer picture. Always kind of felt like cheating to me though. I do send your vids to a friend just to show how often we should be pulling up our snares. I was dazzled at how fast the crabs get to the bait and it explained why we often came up with an empty bait box. Now I cast one snare and let it soak while I'm baiting the other one. As soon as the second snare is cast I pull the first one up. All because of you guys take the risk of losing your go pro to show us the speed a carb will get to your bait!
So many crabs in such a short time! If you would test an area with one one pot for ten minutes and then move to a different location if you saw little results. If the pot is full in ten minutes drop the rest of your pots close by and then just start hauling and culling. Time and fuel efficient.
I was blown away how fast it filled. Please try slip ring traps. Crabs CAN'T escape when pulled! Mount Go Pro facing down where 3 ropes connect. I don't use a light. 50' down on a sunny day.
Would you recommend this pot for crabbing off the docks? I'm going to be going grabbing at the end of the month, and want to know if i should get one or just keep using my pots.
Maybe you can just lift the net a little every minute, if it's heavy you know it's full The crabs won't run away at your lifting, they are not like fishes Or better, use a live water proof camera connected to your laptop to show the underwater
When I was much younger man I worked as a sternman on a lobster boat up here in Maine. For us crabs were the enemy. They would get in the traps and eat all the bait. The old guy I worked for would have me put a crab on the bait string along with the regular bait. He said it would keep the other crabs from coming into the trap. I'm not sure it really worked, but we did it anyway. We would set a string of traps in an area we knew the crabs were use those for the day. He would let a 10 trap string soak overnight, and when we hauled them the next day we would have tons of them to use. I've seen a 4 foot trap come over the rail so stuffed with crabs both inside and clinging on the outside that you could not see the trap itself. It literally looked like a huge ball of crabs. All so I could kill them and use them as both bait and deterant. One man's trash is another man's treasure, I guess.

Hiya! I have just started crab hooping. Yay! And, I have the same issue. HOW DO I KNOW THAT CRABS ARE IN MY HOOP? Yesterday, crabs took ALL my bait, and I had no idea that they were even there. So, I've been thinking about setting up a rigged floater system. I tie a floater/small buoy to a piece of bait, in my case, sardine. When the crab eats the sardine, the buoy is released and floats to the top. Then I can wait a few mins, before pulling it up.

Great video with full crab ring within 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the crab ate up all the bait and left before you pulled it out of the water. Maybe invest in a crab bait bag or container to make you bait last longer and the crab will not leave so soon. I noticed in most of your crab videos, you load up your crab pot bait container like you intend to feed the crab vs just to attract the crab.
