- For my entire crabbing career, I have only used one type of crab trap. In this video, I put it to the test against a custom crab pot that was made by a local guy and lent to me by a buddy. Will it out perform the old crab trap? Today we find out!!!!

And I use a pair of well built tongs with rubber coated heads to gently wiggle them out of the pot when they are stuck, I don’t ever worry about getting grabbed... once was enough for me.

Put a zip tie on the end that does not have the clip. You will never have to worry about it coming apart or losing part of it. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxxvthjLYk8bJwhOkjNsLvPwnSKZmnHeT1 The diameter of the holes are about 2 1/2". They can still get out if there is no bait in the trap. You can also use a zip tie to keep the bait in place. I use a can of Sardines in oil with hole punched in it wired to the bottom and then loose Chicken or fish. This keeps them there longer, but if left long enough the trap will be empty. I learned this the hard way. I threw the trap in and watched it aMost fill up. Like a dummy, I got greedy, when I came back in an hour, all were gone except four. Good buy for the money!

still though, caught a couple monsters over here in Texas that were over 1 lb. and a handful of big ones over 350 g. (about 3/4 lb)

Turn the trap upside down and shake over the side. Works best usually.

Over the year I have figured out which trap works best: it's the one that you watch like a hawk.
(all other pots are either raided or stolen)
If you want them to let go of the pot just the pot in the water and swish it around a bit. That usually loosens them up.
I do not know why this gig guy would do an educational video and not be prepared. Having a 10 pot lobster permit in Massachusetts, we always were prepared/ready to rebait our traps. I also would not throw back legal size crabs or lobsters. The video was interesting looking at the various crab traps out there fishing. But I would not be throwing the old bait overboard and not rebating. It is not cost effective. I just bought a crab trap from The Bass Pro Shop. I love it!

To get those rock crabs to let go just submerge your trap for a few seconds and they will relax and let go.

Add a few ounces of weight to the doors of trap so wave action doesn't open them as easily. Bait wise can blend up fish heads and freeze it in a water bottle and remove and put inside..might work-
all you haft to do is rinse the pot kep it in the water around a 1 mint
To get crabs to let go of the trap.. flip the pot upside down.. they will hang on a little bit but easier to get them off that way👍

Turn the trap upside down when the crabs hold on to the bottom. They will let go soon after.
Shake the cage...we lost 1 crab cage out in half moon bay..swells were up, but we were DIE HARD...

Those Dungeness and Rock Crabs seem much more docile than the Blue Crabs we have in Texas. I wish we had Dungeness crabs, but our Blue Crabs are MEAN.

According to the CADFW website the season is open until July 30th. Not sure where you got today as the last day?

the custom trap didn't do so well because it's a lot smaller, and you don't seem like you secure your bait very much and they dangle around, so the crabs can reach from outside and just never go in. the larger Danielson has much more room for error because its wider, even if the bait moves, it is still likely in the center of the pot. you should secure the bait so that it doesn't move at all so the crabs HAVE to go inside to get at it.
