    I'm loving your travel series. I went out of my way to make a hd micro run by 2x 1s lipos just so I can have a setup where drone, goggle battery and radio are all chargeable by usb. This changes things. You think if the math works out I can use a balance board or that's asking too much for this? I fly sub250 so 4s is the biggest I go.

    • @AlbertKimTV

      I generally stay away from balance boards. They've killed so many of my lipos.

      @@AlbertKimTV I bought the tool kit rc m4 ac earlier this year and loved the size. The fact that this new thing is a usbc makes it that much more convenient, not that the m4ac wasn't already difficult to bring along.

    Hi Kim, will this discharge a charged battery if I set voltage to 3.85?

  • @yonseimatt
    @yonseimatt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Merry Christmas! Yes, I recently bought the M6 for this exact purpose, it’s honestly not much bigger. I was intrigued by the USBC to XT60 cable though, I recently made a USBC to JST Losi for charging my wife’s HoloLens from Lipos and thought I’d do the same with C- XT60. Now I don’t have to!

    • @AlbertKimTV
      @AlbertKimTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The USB-C cable has a special chip to negotiate the PD and QC protocols. Home-made DIY cables won't work.

    • @yonseimatt
      @yonseimatt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlbertKimTV Good to know, thanks! I can buy those PD/ QC boards here for about 2rmb- maybe 30-40 cents? I think they max out at about 3 amps though, probably not enough... I'll definitely order one of those ToolkitRC cables anyway.

  • @forfreedomtwo6921
    @forfreedomtwo6921 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It will work if my USB-C supply is less thatn 80W, right?? (EG. 45W laptop USBC supply, assuming it will just limit the max charge current I can have)

    • @AlbertKimTV
      @AlbertKimTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. I was using a 65W power supply in the video and it worked just fine.

    • @JeanMatthieuD
      @JeanMatthieuD 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlbertKimTV Personally I tried a lot of USB-C QC / PD power supplies, and it DOESN'T WORK with power supplies compatible with 20v output...
      In fact, it stopped working in your video at 6:56 (the power input voltage became red, ie. no input)

  • @JanDaliba
    @JanDaliba 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for review.
    Why there was voltage drop on USB C input side during charging? At the moment you realize you are charging at 5 A, the input voltage dropped and charging stopped and do not recover... Do you know why?

    • @AlbertKimTV
      @AlbertKimTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Basically the current being pumped into that battery was too fast so it actually shut it off because it thought it reached 4.2v already. It's part of the safety features. At that high current, the internal resistance on that small lipo is too much so it shuts it down so a fire doesn't start.

    • @JanDaliba
      @JanDaliba 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your answer. And the reason why input voltage droped to 5 V? Yes it is USB but PD… Cannot this be the reason why charging was stoped too?

  • @nemocheerio
    @nemocheerio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder what their rationale is for limiting these chargers to 4s? You already have a watt limit. This would be a great "out and about" charger for my small quads. But I charge my 1s's on a serial 6s cable so I can do them in batches of 6. Obviously it would be well below the watt limit but you just can't connect it.

    • @AlbertKimTV
      @AlbertKimTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think your specific situation is not common. By the way, I do the serial charging as well but I have a more flexible solution so I can go down to a 4S setup for this charger... see this video for details... th-cam.com/video/OHFHDOLAYqQ/w-d-xo.html

    • @nemocheerio
      @nemocheerio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlbertKimTV Thanks for the reply. That is a nice board. But the cables I make are very nice too and I have numbered the leads so I can jumper any unused ones to bring the cell count down. It's just that this charger is so nice and has such a small footprint but they only put a 4s sized plug on it. Seems a shame to me, and I just can't think of a reason except saving a few pennies in manufacturing why you would put a 4s plug rather than a 6s plug in there. Am I missing something?
      I think you are right about my charging methods being uncommon too ;-) It's kind of amazing to me the amount of people that I talk to that don't even know what serial charging is. I know people who charge their batteries one or two at a time or buy a special charger just for their 1s's! I try to fly at least 15 packs a day (1s/3s) when I can, so parallel or serial charging is a must for me. I would literally spend all day switching out batteries to fly at night if I didn't.
      Again, thanks for the reply!

    Hi Albert! Since the usb-c goes both ways… If you connect a battery bank via usb-c how does it know if you’re wanting to use it to charge a LiPo or charge it with a LiPo. Does it depend on what you connect first? Thanks!

    • @AlbertKimTV
      @AlbertKimTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For this charger, the USB-C is input only. No output.

  • @Vaeloron
    @Vaeloron 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Unfortunately forcing the use of both the balance port and charge port seems like a miss. I don't think many of my smaller 2s and 3s lipos would be able to reach both ports as they have very short leads. I know that there are a few chargers on the market that can charge through the balance lead alone and that would have made this perfect for my needs. Thanks for the review.

    @GordLamb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Gah! This thing is the *exact* form factor I was looking for as a general purpose charger... but I guess it can't do an unbalanced charge, or charge lead acid. That's a pretty epic fail on ToolkitRC's part. :( Hopefully they can fix that in firmware.

    • @AlbertKimTV
      @AlbertKimTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They have other general purpose chargers for those needs. This one is special purpose for mainly small batteries in a travel scenario.

    • @GordLamb
      @GordLamb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlbertKimTV I've been looking. :) I do have the iCharger X12, and it's awesome.. but only XT60 on the input. Sure, I've got a PD 20V/5A trigger -> XT60 cable, but one more thing to keep around. The M4 could absolutely support unbalanced charging... literally just, say, long-press the button, have it pop up "change unbalanced battery with (X) cells?" (cycling through cell count), and one more to confirm.
