The Harpsichord needs to make a comeback
where did it go?!?
Unfortunately, the modern piano has long supplanted the harpsichord as the go-to medium for keyboard works long ago for obvious reasons. As elegant as the harpsichord is, it is treated more as an historical curiosity, albeit an important one at that.
no, it really doesnt
I’m hearing the harpsichord a lot among in dream pop artists like Beach House and Julia Holter
To me the piano has more versatility but the harpsichord has more soul walterstoffelauthor.com
Harpsichord is truly the best instrument to exist. How piano overshadowed it, I will never know.
is it awesome? yep. is it awesomer than a piano? idk man i do like me some dynamics...
i think they are both perfect but iam very sad they dont exist like that anymore in popular ways
pianos probably cheaper and easier to make maybe i dunno but this instrument is way better
Without going into details - there are a huge number of arrangements from the harpsichord for piano, but there is not a single reverse arrangement. The expressive possibilities of the harpsichord are very limited compared to the piano. Although the harpsichord is one of my favorite instruments.
FOR REAL, I have always wondered that, ever since I first heard harpsichord on WFDD in Winston Salem, NC back in the late 70's when I was a little girl.
Actual "artists" would think for a second what they are and those real artists from the past were. Now all they do is to produce songs to fill and make a cd/lp to make money while classic composers just MADE MUSIC, MADE ART. A gift for humanity. THANKS.
I didn’t know Bach composed and played his music in CHURCH! 😱
He dedicated his craft for “the glory of God”.
Awesome.
He did. But also remember that the church was an important supporter of this music. The church and the aristocracy. No National Endowment at that time.

Now, 35 years after, I'm still loving it as much as that day..🎹🎶💖
Is it just me, or is J.S. Bach simply perfect?
His music is a powerful drug
@@michelasernacchioli yes, true that!
I completed a degree in Music (vocal performance) at University of Houston in the late 70's. Analyzing JS Bach's music in advanced theory classes was a revelation to me -- the "engineering" aspect of EVERY SINGLE PIECE HE WROTE was an absolute marvel, each time we studied one. What an enormous body of MASTERWORKS -- absolutely stunning to our teeny little minds today! :-) JS Bach had a beautifully clear, concise, musically brilliant (and prolific!) mind -- hundreds and hundreds of marvelous gems to discover, lost in awe of God's gifts to him...
a genius to be sure

Harpsichords made a brief comeback in the mid-1960s when several bands began using them, it was called “Baroque pop” for anyone who wants to hear more modern usages of the harpsichord. Me personally, I adore this instrument and can’t get enough of it, regardless of the era or style. It’s elegance always shines through.
The comeback of the harpsichord continues and grows. And now--if I am not mistaken---a comeback of the fortepiano is in the works, and why not, because with tasteful electronic amplification, it can replace any grand piano in the largest hall.
@@777rogerf In truth it never went away. But the resurgence of the 60s was quite the pop phenomenon and was larger in percentage and scale compared to the "fortepiano" thing you are talking about. Have you ever heard of synthesizers and electronic keyboards?? Basically the same thing different incarnation.

Baroque pop hardly sounds like baroque at all
@jamest6474 I've had many synths and none can really "do it" like the originals. Like I say about the fender 'rhodes' piano "often imitated, but never duplicated" inb4 "cringe," "73"

Finest musician in history.
Both Beethoven and Mozart have said that J.S. Bach is the greatest composer, and they both aspired to be able to compose like him. A true musical genius.
Beethoven also venerated Handel.
@@sarahsarah2534 Yes. And Beethoven also venerated The Monkees. Who doesn't love The Monkees?
It's crazy that somebody composed all this with pen, ink and paper. This man must have been so brilliant I doubt he had one minute of silence in his head, it was full of tones, chords, arrangements and music structures. He would probably have been an outstanding mathematician and scientist, too
He intrinsically understood mathematics. Pick up a copy of the book Godel, Escher & Bach--The Eternal Golden Braid.
I think you are right. He also would have been a good architect. You were not so bad yourself though Ludwig.

+J Amador I just love Baroque music on a Everyday everyhour.
So do I, since I have not been a believer in dog for over half a century, after shedding my Catholic faith. The point is that one does not have to believe in dog to appreciate the magnificence of Bach's genius. The same goes for any other great, good and mediocre Baroque composer.

That harpsichord in the image is a work of art. Just wow.
There's something really special about the harpsichord
Someone whose name now escapes me said “God owes something to JS Bach”. After these concertos and the Mass in B minor, the statement is amply justified
I fell in love with the Harpsichord the first time I heard it. It has such a unique and beautiful sound. It is one of if not my favorite instruments. Love the harp too. :-) It's what I listen to when the homies aren't around...
J. S. Bach''s keyboard music can be beautiful on many types of keyboards, but, in the end, no other keyboard can fully take the place of the instruments for which Bach's works were written including the harpsichord.
The high notes are angelic while the lower ones are brutal. Truly we are blessed to listen to such an instrument!
Food for soul. Bach connects me with God.
He was provided with the authority to write the soundtrack of the bible, which why they call him "the 5th evangelist"
Every time I hear a harpsichord I think of a beautiful cathedral. It's a very unique and ethereal sound and I love that it has some "percussive" element on it.
This is what heaven must be like
This man and his work is an inspiration for all those who make art in this dark age- I am not speaking about the pandemics , I am speaking about the 21st century
While the 21st century has been dark, 17th-18th century Europe weren't exactly bright and beautiful. Lots of wars and killings, especially surrounding the reformation. In fact, Europe was basically in non-stop wars all the way up until after WWII.
i love harpsichiord

Bach and the Harpsichord ruled the Baroque period of music
after having listened to Bach it doesn‘t matter what you do because you already have been to heaven
Out of all of the composers Bach is my favourite. I am a percussionist, but the Harpsichord is an amazing instrument. I don't think anyone but Bach made it sound this way. I immerse myself in his music and for a while all is right with the world.
I think the harpsichord is technically a percussion/string hybrid
@@Rucale_RC3432 That just make it even more amazing...
@@Rucale_RC3432 unlike the piano, harpsichord isn't a precussion instrument, because it's strings are plucked by a plectrum and piano strings are struck by hammers.

J S Bach music is the most beautiful music ever written I hope he is in heaven so that when I get there I’ll get to meet him. My father told me many years ago that J S Bach is the father of music, now that I’m almost 70 I see why he really is The Father of music, cause I never get tired of listening to BACH greatest music in the world, though I also like Beethoven Handel Vivaldi and much of the baroque style music. I wish more of Bach’s music would be played on classical music stations. Take quality time in listening to him it will give you a bit of the good things the world has to offer. A lover off quality music even 60s progressive rock.
Wow, that is a beautiful harpsichord. Possibly the single most baroque thing you could possibly put in a house.
Damn people must have been getting lit at these shows back in the day. It was probably the only time they'd heard music that year.
This music never gets old, and the opening allegros to the 1053 and 1053 are so joyful they could lift anyone's spirits. Played here with exactly the buoyancy the music requires.
J. S. Bach is my favorite of all time. This music, the Brandenburg Concertos and some of the Well Tempered Clavier send me to heaven. I have played his music on my piano & synthesizer for 55 years and the harpsichord on the Synth sounds great. He was truly a gift from God. It is sad that his music went out of style for awhile until Couperin and others brought it back. Schumann wrote that the WTC is the daily bread for pianists and Beethoven established himself as a pianist playing them for awhile. Rock stars can make hundreds of millions now while Bach had to push just to make a living. Thank goodness that one of his sons kept all of the music.
so that's the deal for being the world's greatest composers (Mozart, Bach, Beethoven...). live in poverty , great distress, despair and misery but your name will shine until the end of humanity. There is no exception: It's not widely known but Bach had to watch 7 of his children dying.
@@ludwigvanbeethoven61 In spite of Bach losing 7 children during or right after their birth and 3 others not making it into adulthood, he still had a sense of humor. Some of his music shows it. You are right that he and his wives must have suffered terribly. I cannot imagine losing a child. The extremely detailed Pulitzer prize finalist book on Bach by Christoff Wolff also showed that he had some critics and one really nasty one who attacked him about the first WTC book and others. It bothered him but then he wrote the 2nd volume, book II of the WTC. He also had some fun with his sons where upon hearing music he would talk about the many other ways to write and arrange it. When he was older he got his recognition from a more important critic but believed that his music had fallen out of style before he died. If only he could have known that he would become one of the greatest composers and teachers of all time. I guess this happens all of the time like e.g. giving a Nobel prize to dead winners. You probably read the book but it is called Johann Sebastian Bach; The Learned Musician. The detail is amazing. Best to you.
@@ludwigvanbeethoven61 Bach was well-employed and widely-known and admired by leading musicians in Europe. After commenting on other top musicians of his day,, Handel--who was famed in England--said, "And then there is Herr Bach, the master of us all",

Ah, the harpsichord. It's sad to see people who look down upon this magnificent instrument and taking it for granted without even hearing the beauty that comes from within it's cords and ivory tips and the sounds that bellow from it's wooden cavity. Those who are new to this type of music, I implore you to listen to as much as you can. The harpsichord is such a beauty among most other ivory tipped instrument. A hidden beauty, If you will. To know how to play and be able to have it in my own home would be a dream come true. I hope you all enjoy the harpsichord as much as I do.

Я тоже очень люблю это место!
@Raymond Davies you can pretty much apply maths to everything, but I'm guessing he/she says it under the basis that it's systematic.
This movement is a fugue, which is to a certain extent a mathematical exercise - but what you say has a great deal of importance: Bach was fascinated by numerology and the balance of numbers can be seen everywhere in his music. I think it is one of the reasons why his music just feels so "satisfying".....

A long time ago I had an interesting experience listening to Bach's Christmas Oratorio after listening to Wozzeck for several hours -- the Bach sounded atonal!
