    I saw this Leeds United team against my team (Chelsea) at the beginning of the 1970's - I have always been impressed by them and they were, without doubt, the first "Superteam" this Country ever produced.

      Yes I totally agree, the old European Cup , so much more entertaining than the vile Bloated champions league, all the teams had great players, when a great coach could make a difference, imagine something like what Brian Clough did with Forest happening in today’s predictable boring game.....

      @@spencerglover1 The current league system is all about money and removing the possibility of smaller clubs progressing to the knock- out stages. The massive clubs can afford to lose or draw a few games and still progress. Having the same clubs in last four every year makes it tedious.

    Cruyff was the greatest player I have ever seen, and Neeskens was not far behind. Yet Leeds made them look ordinary that night. Unquestionably in my mind one of the three greatest English club sides ever, alongside Busby's 1968 Man Utd side and the Liverpool of the late 80s. Also fantastic commentary by the late, great David Coleman.

    As a long suffering Spurs fan..I don't mind admitting I was also a a fan of Leeds,and any team who played good Football!Sure they were Tough (u hear many a comment they were Dirty!)but I think they just played hard(except for Norman Hunter,who could play&certainly kick lumps out of the opposition!)
    But the bottom line,they were a fantastic team,with so much talent!.
    You Yorkshiremen should always feel proud!(I'm absolutely jealous, considering at the crap coming out of Tottenham these days!).
    And I don't care what anyone says FOOTBALL was better back then!..Now we have more FLASH&Pazazz,a lighter football(which allows the most average player to bend a shot in from 50 yes!)very little Physicality,way to much "diving"! and so on!..But this was the game we loved👍

Real Madrid comes to mind: Netzer/Breitner in 74-77; Jensen/Stielike in 77-79; Stielike/Cunningham in 79-82; Stielike/Metgod in 82-84; Stielike/Valdano in 84-85; Valdano/Hugo Sanchez in 85-87... Five Scottish players in the first eleven (&probably two on the bench: Lorimer & Harvey) in a European Cup semi-final .. what the fuck has gone wrong these days?? SFA should hang their heads in shame. Leeds nearly robbed here as they were in the final that year. Jordan handball like he did v Wales in the WC qualifier v Wales in 1977. Great Leeds team back then.

      Right?! How things have changed!! In this footage, I notice the old ref, the back passes to the goalie, the goalie holding, dribbling, then picking up again,.. the forward pestering the goalie during the punt, the goalie having limited steps to punt,.. and the cameramen just inches away from the end line.... And yes, a modern Barca team would put up ten goals in the first half...

If you were to look at how many high profile games Leeds had to play in EC semi's, Fa cup semi's, sometimes playing 2 games in 2 days you might see how Leeds were treated unfairly. Actually they could sign 5 foreigners. However, 2 or 3 could only be allowed to play. This must have been before that aforementioned rule was in place. This also was after the Spanish League lifted the ban on foreigners. And with Barca, they really capitalised when they signed Cruyff.

    @carlossimancas9867 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is a very representative game of Cruyff at Barcelona in the period 1975 to 1978: absolutely irrelevant. He was the best player of the world since 1969 to 1974, but he lost all his motivation and love for football after beein defeated by Germany in the World Cup. Just one league and one Spanish Cup as player of Barcelona (73/74-77/78).

    • @collinsmichael5191
      @collinsmichael5191 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. As good as any I've seen between the years you describe. And the German defeat probably had a lot to do with his motivation falling. Also, maybe the years of chain smoking did catch up with him. However, I think Cruyff, when compared with other great players, should be from his Ajax days and the Dutch national team up to end of world cup 74. In that time he was an absolute electric presence on a football field, and he had some fine players, at their peak, around him. The Barcalona team he played in was I think a very ordinary side. These days, they can go around the world hand picking who they want to play for them. Mind you, he did wipe the floor with England in a friendly game in 77.

    • @carlossimancas9867
      @carlossimancas9867 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Abolutely agree with you, Michael. His best time was with Ajax and Dutch team since 1968 to 1974. But when he was playing for Barcelona not Real Madrid nor Atlético de Madrid had great teams, neither. And it was just one league for a player of his level. After the 0-5 defeat at Bernabeu, many madridistas thought that Barcelona had another Di Stefano, but time proved to be a mistake. Cruyff was one of the five greatest, but it is Messi who has emerged as the Di Stefano of Barcelona: his best player ever. Saludos desde España

    • @collinsmichael5191
      @collinsmichael5191 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I will repeat, Cruyff in those 5-6 years was as good as 'Anyone', in the history of the game. But the players Messi has had around him in all of his playing career at Barcelona, has helped Messi a great deal. Let's face it, if Cruyff had stayed at Ajax, they, not B Munich, would in all probability won the Euro cup 3 more times. If Messi moved from Barcelona and went say to an English team such as let's say, Everton, made them in his first season the champions, at the same time as defeating say Manchester United 0-5 on their own ground, and then in the following season take them to a very closely contested semi final defeat in the Euro Champions cup, then I might regard him as being up there with Cruyff. The bold risk Cruyff took to move from strongest team in world football in 73 to a mediocre Spanish team, nobody these days would contemplate such a move. Messi might move to England, but it'll be to Manchester City millionaires not Everton. He hasn't got the guts. And one other thing people forget besides being much more fitness aware these days, is some of the slogging pitches the likes of Cruyff had to play on. They play on snooker tables by comparison these days.

    • @carlossimancas9867
      @carlossimancas9867 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now I dissagree. If you think that Barcelona in the 70s was a mediocre team, then also were mediocre Real Madrid and Atlético in those days. Not the best decade in spanish football at all, but not an irrelevant one: remember that Real Madrid played the semifinals of Champions League in 1973 & 1976, Atlético played the final in 1974 against Bayern, and Barça the semifinal against Leeds in 1975. And I am not talking about Cup of winners cup and UEFA cup.... It would have been almost a miracle to win the European Cup with Barça in 1975 or 1977, as it would have been for Real at the same period, when german and english teams dominated european football. Nevertheless, Barcelona was not Everton or something like that, but a club that was great in the past (50s) and have a terrible sporting crisis for 15 years (since the defeat against Benfica in Berna final, 1961). That Barcelona in 1973-1977 was not the Napoli in which played Maradona since 1984 to 1987, by the way, but a much better club with some great players (Rexach, Neeskens and Sotil, for instance) as teammates for Johan. And one more thing: Di Stéfano arrived to Spain in 1953 to a club that, comparatevely, was much worst than Barça in 1973, and after 11 years that club won 5 champions leagues and 8 ligas, changing forever the history of football. He did that competing with Barça, Bilbao and Atlético, which were a much stronger oposition for Real in those days that it was for Cruyff Real and Atletico in the 70s. Cruyff is a legend, but he lost his motivation and passion for football after the defeat against Germany in 1974. Sorry for my bad english. Saludos
