Moods Of Teahupo’o: An Amazing Wave’s Many Faces

Many words have been used to describe the reef break off Passe Havae, just offshore southwest of Teahupo’o village. Those words - like so many of the images we see - are mostly very full-on. “Most dangerous wave in the world.” “Terrifying.” “Freak.” In fact this dome-shaped bend in the reef has many different moods. It can be small and perfect, it can look like a pointbreak, it can wedge into a peak and send a right peeling back into the shallows. It can be terrifying, sure, but day on day, it’s much more likely to be chill than challenging...and understanding Teahupo’o’s shifts of mood might well be the key to winning gold at the upcoming Olympics.
