- Surfers around the world have long held Tahiti close to their hearts. Not only is the Polynesian island nation home to one of surfing’s most beautiful cultures, it also houses one of surfing’s most famous, feared and intimidating waves. Ever since the mind blowing 1998 Gotcha Pro first put Teahupo’o on the map surfers have been fascinated with the ferocious reef break known as “The Wall Of Skulls”. As well as an endless competition highlight reel some of the greatest waves of the past 25 years have been ridden in Tahiti, powered by both paddle and PWC.
In 2024 Teahupo’o will be thrust into the wider global sporting spotlight, after France declared the notorious South Pacific reef pass would become the host surfing venue. Not only will the eyes of the world be focussed on the incredible beauty above and below sea level, but on the people and the way of life that make Tahiti so special. If conditions collude next August the images will be beamed around the world, and the tiny town could change forever.
In the latest episode of No Contest, host Ashton Goggans makes the trans-Pacific pilgrimage to Teahupo’o, the little fishing village that punches above its weight in surfing circles, to run a microscope over the impact the Games will have on this patch of paradise. After touching down in Papeete he connects with modern surfing powerhouses Kauli Vaast, Michel Bourez, Vahine Fierro and Eimeo Czermak, meets the man who can lay claim to first surfing at The End Of The Road, local “Godfather” Peva Levy, and connects with two of the area's favourite modern hosts, Tereva David and Tahurai Henry, to tap into the mana of the islands and find out what makes Tahiti tick.
This special episode of No Contest comes at an important time in the life of one of surfing’s most special corners. We hope you enjoy watching the show as much as we enjoyed pulling it together.

I was lucky enough to be part of the production crew for the 2012 contest. We had 3 lay days while we waited for the swell. Except for the fact that my wife wasn't with me, it was a wonderful time. Truly magical. The valley, the waterfall, the reef, and most of all the people. So friendly and welcoming. So great.

The Olympics is a horrible, ruinous proposition for any community, it's why we fought it for years here in Boston, USA. Power to the Tahitians for fighting that development.

If you go to Tahiti, make sure you get down to Teahupoo and be one of those people watching, and hooping and hollering from the shoulder (assuming like me you have no intention to surf it!). It's a fairly long drive but if there's a swell I guarantee you will have a moment that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
The most exciting and beautiful place I have ever been to. The people are so nice too! 😃Everyone is so nice to each other while jostling for position in the most polite way possible.😃
There are some places in Nature that should not be fkt with. They deserve our reverence and respect...not commercialism. Why in the heck they would want to hold giant spectator events at a special place like 'chopes is beyond me. Want to charge big surf for the Olympics, take it somewhere already messed up. Only my opinion for what it's worth. Surfing for 15yrs shaped my life and soul. Landlocked and 76yo, I relive favorite waves and places everyday. Peace out to all my water brothers and sisters. May everyday be hollow, overhead, and shark-free. Love to all. Peace.
I paddled every morning at 5am to reach Haapiti. It was worth it. Got spooked by the odd shark fin passing right in front of my board.
Lets hope it stays undeveloped and that pure looking Tahitian Polynesian people retain their culture and identity and don’t sell out to be displaced by foreign blow in’s and multiculturalism and interbreeding.

French Polynesia is nothing but amazing, great people, culture and nature, and coming from Hawaii it just feels like home... I will be back soon I'Orana!

Great video. What's with the weird English subtitles? The interviewees are speaking English but the subtitles don't match what they are saying. It isn't a voice recognition thing, the subtitles rephrase what they say, which seems kind of messed up.

The only thing this video fails to point out is how outrageously expensive everything is for mere mortals like most of us , the ones that don't surf professionally, don't have sponsors or connections on the island,and have to pay for a surf trip that requires some very deep pockets ...
They do point it out, and also make a point out of explaining very correctly that this allows for people to earn good wages. Everyone who travels to low cost countries and praises how cheap they are should be aware that these low prices are big part of how the low income levels (read: poverty) are sustained.
That's probably also part of what keeps Tahiti from becoming Bali..
Which is why Teahupoo might keep it's charm, and it's eco system..................

Let's be honest about all this "we're keepin' it real". Nobody wants their favorite spot to get overrun. These guys have a lot of advantages when it comes to keeping out the kooks (and yet, there are other videos where the wave is overrun with tourists). Why even allow the Olympics to come? Look in the corner of the video - Red Bull sponsorship - yeah, we're making money, but we need to make more. How can we do that? "We're not in a poor country guys." What does that mean? We make enough to fly around the world when we feel like it? Marketing - nice promo video for Red Bull - selling a dream lifestyle to those who can only afford a can of caffeine.
The Olympics began as a way for nations to showcase their people and pride. What it has become is a corporate mess filled with bribes, leverage and corruption. The roots are still strong but the fruit it produces has become tainted.
