- AN EXCLUSIVE DOCUMENTARY.
Lost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, on the island of Tahiti, lies a village that's home to one of the world's most beautiful waves - Teahupo'o. Facing mystical mountains covered in a wild and luxuriant jungle, the perfect wave of Teahupo'o wraps around the reef to create a powerful tube that attracts the best surfers on the planet.
Photographer Tim Mckenna has been documenting this paradise for over 25 years. From Laird Hamilton's Millennium Wave to WSL competitions, the locals pushing the limits, and the upcoming Olympic Games, he has been a privileged witness to Teahupo'o.
Alongside all the big names in surfing, he has seen the emergence of a generation of local kids who have come to tame this mythical wave. Among them are Tahurai Henry and Gilbert Teave.
Aware of how lucky they are to have grown up in this paradise, they dedicate all their energy and heart to preserving the place and passing on their culture to future generations. They are the guardians of the temple, the heirs of the village. They are the children of Teahupo'o.
OXBOW is proud to present CHILDREN OF TEAHUPOO, a 36-minute film produced by Showcast, directed by Hand Studio.

I went to Tahiti and Moorea for 3 weeks in September 2005 and my Tahitian hubby at time took me to Teahupoo and even on small 4-6 ft day the current was insane. The most magical place on earth such beauty and energy. I love this film as I've been huge fan of McKenna photography and to finally see the genius himself and his story is truly incredible. Thank you for sharing. ❤ ❤
Tragic :( I swear it is my dream to see this paradise with my own eyes but I just could'nt go. I have too much respect for the simplicity of these people's lives. I hope the governement of Polynesia will be worthy of respect by avoiding the tragedy threatening their poeple. I beg pro surfer's community to wake up and protect the gift nature gives them to do what they love. Have a beautiful day, from brussels.
You said exactly what I feel. I'm French, I want to go, it's a true dream but I don't want to be part of the destruction and mass tourism.
Money....money...money....the World we live in....
Full support to the children of teahupoo... Keep your spot wild!!!!
ça a deja commencé...

I really hope the Olympic Games wont change the soul of this magnificent place, makes me sad to see the sadness in Gilbert eyes, thats their paradise and true surfers
Beautiful ! Nicely shot. Great story. I only hope the commercialism of the Olympics does not ruin this surfing treasure for generations to come.
Great production! Great initiative! We want teauhpo as it is!
Awesome video. Really shows how humble and unique this place in Tahiti is.
Keep fighting for keeping Teahupo'o as it has always been.
Absolutely stunning moving outstanding documentary - tone, editing, soundtrack… all wonderful. I have watched dozens of Teahupoo surf clips on TH-cam but your film really stands out on a different level doing the subject justice - huge respect. 👏👏
My tears fall for the children of Teahupo'o, they fall at the thought of what might be lost from this delicately balanced village ecosystem. I wish with my whole heart for the whole world that greed is replaced with a peaceful harmony with nature
Fabuleux reportage ! Simple et magnifique. Sans artifices. Comme ce lieu.
So so so sad. Happened in so many places and always new places get destroyed. They convince the local people that this business will bring money, wellfare, jobs for their children. Then foreign investors and speculators will buy their lands and properties for what seems good money for the poorer locals. Then prices of land and properties will rocket high up, living right their will become too expensive for the locals, jobs will go to people that for too low salaries spend a season or some and the place just becomes a business of outsiders, the money goes to other countries where the investors reside and locals will have lost their paradise, money and jobs, and most of all, the land they could live on without all this business.
Just like Cornwall, UK local people born in Cornwall cannot afford to buy a house there anymore....
@@peterkeeves8240 true, you guys just described Thailand's entire coastline, locals are absolutely priced out of living there.
I hate the capitalistic mindset. People all around the world were living great and then they were told they could obtain better, but it was all a ruse.
@@risemahadeva the accumulation of assets is not just a function of capitalism, there are oligarchs atop the myriad political/economic systems. what we need to stop is the preternatural greed that some people have, but I dunno how we do that...
This is yet another reason i keep telling people we should aim for a world without money.
If we can make it through climate change, we might be able to do it. Our biggest challenge, like with climate change as well, is our global mostly unwilling attitude.
what a beautiful short movie, I could watch it for 2 more hours, thank you. Really tragic ..same thing happened in front of my eyes in Indonesia at one of my favourite wave. The nature is getting destroyed little by little, investors buying houses who could not care less about surfing and the environment. Sadly this is happening everywhere as surfing is growing in its popularity. Sending love to the people in Teahupo`o .
keep Teahupo'o as it is ! it's a beautifull documentary, and i really hope for them , that everything will be preserved after that, WE can't destroy that in any way. Oxbow you just made an exceptionnel video for sure
super Beau, Super beauty-Full. May Jah protect TEAHUPO'O endlessly.
🙏
Excellent documentary ! Gilbert grom charges a true soul surfer
Great little movie about the world's most outstanding wave and the beautiful people who live and surf there.
I hope we can be sensible and not destroy the essence of that amazing place.
Fantastique reportage.
🤙🏼🇵🇫
Sublime reportage , touchant et vrai . Merci Oxbow et take care boys
Thanks for this! Crazy how these local kids are ripping there... hope they will be able to for the next generations to come.

Amaaaaazing doc guys ! Surfers should stand up and everybody says NO we are not surfing on the Olympics ... at least they should try to find a proper way compite and save the life and nature ...
Magnifique documentaire !
Gilbert is the real deal, good kid,,he going be the man future generations look to,on not just surf,,the whole package,,
I really hope that olympics do not change the view and the environment in Teahupoo to preserve this spot and protect the local population. All the best to you guys over there. If one day i have the chance to visit this piece of paradise i will sleep like you and eat the milk and biscuits like Gilbert .
As modern surfing goes, Teahupoo was "discovered" by multiple time bodyboarding world champion, Mike Stewart, who used to surf Teahupoo by himself for many years. Mike originally called the break, " The End of the Road"
Load of crap. Tahitians always have surfed there.
@@johnwinieski6499 Might want to check your facts before firing off such confident answers. Teahupo was surfed for the first time ever by two local surfers in 1985.
Bodyboarders Mike Stewart and Ben Severson took it from there, and the fame and renown of " The End of the Road", or Teahupo grew from there
Bo
Film tout simplement magnifique, merci Oxbow
🙏
One of the best documentaries......everr
Such a beautiful contribution to Teahupo'o, Tahiti and its people. So sad to see that the globalisation and the capitalistic endeavours are going to reach and destroy this piece of paradise.
The last part of this documentary was quite heartbreaking to me. My heart is with Tahitian people and their land. May it stay forever in their hands. Don't sell your land. The money won't buy you the air, the ocean nor the fish. It's just not worth to loose your own dignity, culture and land for money which won't make you happier nor richer. The pro surfers should also contribute here and fight against the imposed rules of the Olympics, which led to construction of new facilities and the following destruction of good parts of the reef. I had tears in my eyes watching this last part of the documentary. In my opinion pro surfers who really care about the environment (and especially local ones) shouldn't compete out of protest. Please protect this piece of paradise.
Incredible and important work. Thank you for making and sharing this.
OMG .. beautiful movie!
Beautiful film.
Very revealing documentary showcasing a potential huge problem for the gentle people of this little Tahitian village. I will go there next year and I hope I find the place is not ruined by the spot light of the 2024 Olympics. Lets hope I find these gentle water warriors living the same beautiful uncomplicated life
This truly touched my heart and made me love the place even more. Wow!❤️
Holy shit i thought I was watching a KOA Rothman vid. This is next level .Love Koa but this is legit.
Way better than koa
Here for the algorithm, as everyone should watch this masterpiece.
Protect and fight for keep the nature on that peace of heaven!!
Thank you for sharing. I didn’t know and my heartfelt hugs to you.
Beautiful!
Impresionante me gustó mucho ❤
Defiendan su pueblo, su cultura y sobretodo su vida tranquila.
Amazing!!!

Already excited to watch season 7. I’ll be thrilled to see a SOG on next round! Please use the same 15gl pots from this season showing if you would reamend or not and how!
Keep you the good work for the community Jeremy!
So beautifull ❤
Perhaps all pro surfers should boycott any Olympic "games" in Tahiti. Problem solved🤷♂️
Wow this is very sad! I feel you guys it happend the same shit in my hometown village 😢
this docu contains a very important message
Excellent
Amazing film, surfing spirit lives in Tahiti
Thanks for sharing your life at Teauhpo. It looks truly beautiful. I hope it stays the same for you if that is possible.❤❤
So good to see the locals enjoying their prized waters. My best wishes for the Olympic Games: may they bring you happiness, wealth, and new friends.
The kids (and adults) are enjoying their environment as their people have always done for many millennia. It makes sense that when you live on an island you have to get comfortable with water.
Merci !
Amazing video!❤ all the way from tiny island aruba
beautiful place with beautiful people in it
This needs to be covered in the news
Great video!
Superb 🌴🌊💚
Magnifique
The Most beautiful wave .
@7:30 that reflection is magnificent!
Get the best surfers in the world to boycott it! Surfers rely on nature for what they love. Band together!

Not worth ruining the reef to build the Olympic stands.
video de l année 😮
Beautiful story ❤ hopefully the olympics don’t destroy your beautiful paradise 😢
❤ Merci ❤
well done 1 luv yeah....i can relate about the village of Lahaina...aloha and mahalo
Well done!
Lo haces muy bien
Why would you allow the Olympics there? Horrible idea. They leave a huge mess and irreversible damage to most places they set up. Total sellout move😢
It's the best barrel in the world. And it's a French territory. Why not showcase Olympic surfing at the best barrel in the world?
There was a major opposition by locals when a new tower for the Olympics was proposed. It was disregarded and built.
Why don't they do it in a wave pool? At least the wave is always the same for everyone!
@@ruimonteiromeCould have built a wave pool in France somewhere, then used by the public afterwards for years.
Not every ‘joe’ can afford to fly to the other side of the world!

Amazing is too see your life in this place, it is truly Paradise. Now we know about it, we can go visit your dream ocean livelyhood...Thanks for sharing.
top !
E Kū Teahupoʻo👊🏾🤙🏾
Très Très bien 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
It cost France $8.7 Billion (115% over) to host the summer games, and while broadcast money could match or exceed that, the IOC takes more than half of all the broadcast revenue, leaving taxpayers to pay the rest... There is no world in which the Olympics are beneficial to anyone other than corporations.
Les plans sont magnifiques wow 😮
grandiose!
Cet endroit est magique
