Every Canadian of a certain vintage will have seen this "micro-documentary" (1 minute, it's meant to fit in an ad break) about the Halifax harbour explosion: th-cam.com/video/rw-FbwmzPKo/w-d-xo.html
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the personality and input of Troy in the show, but man y’all are a joy to listen to. Thanks for continuing to do this podcast. Been listening for three years now!
@@Feuryy I think during the pandemic it was really easy for everyone in the show to get together but at some point work schedules and family priorities and stuff all started effecting things.
I want to live in a world in which I never realized until this episode, but Austin just keeps laying back harder every single episode and if you go back and watch every episode he's like half an inch further up each one or smtn LMAO Like 200 episodes from now camera will just barely get his eyes on the shot lol
I've not been able to find anything official, but from the reddit/articles I've read suggest it's something like: TH-cam premium has a revenue split of 45% to Google, and 55% to content creators. The way the money for content creators is split is by taking a premium user's watch time across channels and then splitting along those percentages. The type of ads that play on a channel changes the cpm, but I've heard a premium user is worth 3-4x a non-premium (going off memory based on what LTT described in one of their videos).
Came here to say the same thing. Everything I’ve seen suggests that a view from a premium subscriber is worth significantly more than a view from a non-premium viewer.
I pay for youtube premium not to deal with ads (the proper way)....it used to be good...but it kinda defeats the purpose now with more and more content creators just putting ads/sponsors directly in their videos anyway....It's like paying Netflix not to watch ads and then watching an episode of stranger things only for Eleven and the crew stopping mid way to tell me about why I should buy/drink Coca Cola.
The issue with Gamepass really is the features of different tiers. Getting day one on PC for 12$, but a console user has to pay 20$ is crazy. The argument of an in reality unusable xCloud service for the price difference is a hard sell. It's basically a middle finger to XBox Series owners.
"It's basically a middle finger to XBox Series owners." Because Microsoft-Xbox KNOWS this is a largely captive audience of: 1. The HARDEST of hardcore Xbox console fan boys, who will literally "go down with the ship." They're ride-or-die until Microsoft finally kills the Xbox. 2. Price conscious consumers who don't have the means / capital to buy a PC (or other consoles), who CAN afford a monthly subscription to play some video games, but CAN'T necessarily afford to BUY GAMES / PLAY VIDEO GAMES any other way. For this budget focused group their ONLY option to play video games is to buy a series console and pay for Game Pass every month... or they simply can't play video games (that aren't free-to-play or on mobile). Microsoft will bleed the hardcore audience for as much as they can, and push their budget / price conscious consumers for as much as they can get away with.
Small correction: Netflix isn't bleeding money, it's actually the only properly profitable streamer. They hit a customer plateau, which is why they introduced a cheaper ad supported tier. Prime who obscure their streaming profitability added ads to their regular tier. The problem is the reason streaming exists was to compete with piracy, where there are no ads. So the implication has always been that we're paying to have something easier and more convenient than the ad free seven seas. In the current enshittening of the Internet, they're fast approaching edge of acceptability.
@hankschannel I wonder if I Super Thank from TH-cam on iPhone if apple will take a bigger cut too. Super Thank on iPhone $9.99 channel actually gets $6.66? Super Thank on Android or not on iOS/iPad OS channel gets the full $9.99? Please have a conversation about this. I’d love to understand your experiences. ❤
Did not expect to see the Halifax explosion as a topic on pwl, as someone from Halifax. I guess plenty of tv/film shoots there but I’m always genuinely surprised if anyone even knows where it is lol.
I hope you enjoyed your stay on the east coast of Canada! I used to jog in that Titanic graveyard. I believe the plane you're talking about was the Swissair 111. I remember feeling the impact when that plane crashed near Peggy's Cove, absolutely terrifying, & will never forget that feeling.
33:10 Yeah, recently cancelled my Gamepass, between the multiple Studios closures, higher prices, and realizing that i was paying for a service i didn't really had the time to enjoy fully. I would rather buy a few games a year and taking my time with them rather than monthly and not appreciating them.
Maybe this is a tech future we haven't gotten to yet, but can't you set up a video doorbell that only puts a notification, silenced, of course, to your phone? Maybe also have an automatic playback of "this is not a restaurant" audio cue for the rest
I never wanted to pay for TH-cam Premium, until a few years ago, I got a voucher for maybe 3 months free, when I bought a Chromecast... I have been a subscriber ever since! I cannot imagine ever going back to the ads!
The back half of the most recent My Favorite Murder podcast covered the Halifax explosion, for a fairly short and succinct encapsulation of it. It is a harrowing and insane story.
One thing I'd never change is that, in my city, there are posts from our Postal Service that you can set to get your packages to go. That way, you don't have to fear the carrier missing you.
After passing with the package I briefly thought Austin said, ‘It was a cable I ordered.’ Reminded me of a Woody Allen joke, involving a similarly large package, and him suggesting it was a pair of earrings.
I don't know if it's still the case today, but TH-cam Premium views used to be many times more valuable to creators than ad supported views. What I do know is that they don't individualize the premium views, meaning if someone with premium watches just one video in a month doesn't mean that particular video gets the full share of that viewer premium sub. Every minute of a premium viewer is worth the same to the creator, and that should be substantially more than an ad-supported one. And just to be clear, so it is to TH-cam.
The crazy thing about Netflix and Steam, especially in the Tech space, is that they have genuinely been profitable most of their existence. They didn't operate at a loss trying to push out competition, they did classic budget and pricing while providing a superior service to the customer.
Spotify listener here just to check out Mike's moustache. Edit: This is literally the first time in my life that I have seen a moustache I think looks very good!

The comments section didn't let me down, Mike's mustache is indeed glorious. Still catching up the podcast, had a good laugh at Austin's freelance dating analogy. I will die on this hill: it is unacceptable to have ads in any kind of paid service. It was bad when it was cable, it’s bad now with streaming. If it has ads, it should be free.
“Aggressively polyamorous with Austin.” Hahaha! There’s no reason that shouldn’t be the video title. Clickbaity? Sure, but also contextually completely and aggressively true.
YES, MIKE, I FACE THE SAME THING. It's so weird how much the moustache is a thing to people. But, like, I get it. How is Gamepass sustainable? Their monthly revenue is at minimum 350 million dollars every month. That's 3,5 BILLION dollars every 10 months, if e assume every subscriber is paying for the lowest tier. Only here for Moustache Mike
and Austin...I guess. 😂
I found this podcast because of Alanah. Stayed for everyone in the podcast.
I’m only here for socialist fun facts.
@@MaTTK74 Austin for sure!
I will say that Troy is definitely missed however listening to this podcast every other week or every week whenever they decide to do it is good Therapy. I have to admit, but I wish they would talk about old video games that they used to play or screw around with I mean, I know they’re talking about industry type stuff which is great, but I wish they would kind of mix the two but I’ve always been a fan from the very beginning and I will always continue to do so.
