FYI the Patreon version of this has an extra two minutes at the start! Also sorry about the audio for this one - it was an issue with my sound specifically, we tried fixing it before we recorded but it was basically the only option to use the speakers (which is causing some echo).
Had no impact on the enjoyment of the podcast but for information I think Mike's mic was picking up a LOT of background noise, breathing moving, don't feel I've noticed it before. Love all your insights
Either that or the controversy around WB paying people to play Shadow of Mordor and be positive about it without disclosing that they had been paid. It was one of the inciting incidents of everyone now having to always disclose if they're being sponsored and exactly how they have to disclose. Or possibly a mix of both these things.
This is a great episode, I love hearing about the nitty gritty of the games industry. Audio issues were noted but didn't hinder my enjoyment of the show.
I can’t speak for everybody, but I would like to say how cool and insightful it is to learn from all of the experience you guys have and banter about as a collective. Ultimately we don’t tune into this podcast just to hear about summer games fest but about how the art and the industry works behind the things we love!
The gang discovers project management :D It's called the "critical path" and requires doing a backward and forward pass of the plan. The problem also comes from trying to factor iteration into the plan. This is why agile is so common in software companies and partly why everything became subscription based.
So interesting to get some insight into freelance vs full-time in the games industry, and the difference in team dynamics that brings. I'm a freelance designer, and I've previously worked in a full-time position, so I can totally relate to Austin's comments about wanting to be kept in the loop when brought in as a freelancer. I've worked on a game (branding, key art, promo art, etc.) where I wasn't kept in the loop because as a freelancer I was an "outsider", and it definitely hindered the process. As with Austin, now I try to stay in the loop as much as possible. Thanks for the great episode as always 👍
Barely talked about SGF week, but was still a great episode. Very interesting to hear how different industries expectations/handling of freelancers and full time employees. And some insight on how the industry was conceived has lead them to function to today's practices.
On the subject of mods being stolen, one example is a fan mod for Fallout: New Vegas, which was a murder mystery about robots that was essentially copied as a questline in one of Fallout 4's expansions.
Critiquing the sound mixing here, if you have two people in the same room with others online, you NEVER want to use speakers. Have both users in the same rooms use headphones connected to the same PC. It will make a WORLD of difference when it comes to preventing echo.
Hiya, love the show. I was wondering if you could put all the episodes into a podcast playlist (not sure how it works, playlist marked as a podcast??) because otherwise it cannot be played on YT music. Thanks for doing this show!!
28:25 Yeah, Alan Wake was not available on steam for a while. But they clearly sorted that out cuz I played it on Steam like 1.5yrs or so ago and the original game is still available for purchase, as is its remastered version.
I wasn't very interested in AC: Shadows at first, but the more I see of it, the more interested I'm getting. With this and Star Wars: Outlaws it seems like Ubisoft is taking intentional steps to fix the meme of Ubisoft open world maps filled with icons, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how their attempts pan out.
Nordic companies tend to shut most of the company down for 2-3 months cause that's the only sunlight we get :D Good thing is that customers are on holiday too, so companies that do service desk etc. get fewer inquiries, so it works out. Foreigners are just weirded tf out when our largest cities are ghost towns :D
i immediately thought of him. Nothing against the guy, i like his videos and watch mainly his commentary ( some are good some are bad, like with everybody ) on various stuff. Honestly i dont watch anybody playing games for extended period of time, i watch a little ( because i dislike spoilers in general ) and if it seems good i buy it and try it if not i go play Elden Ring or something... But it is hilarious how he basically gets a mini mental breakdown every time he goes to play new game on stream... XD
I like that me and Raul had the same thought for music licensing and went to Vice City 😅. Gta 5 also has the same thing and removed music with an update.
Not yet through with the video, but German here. GEMA goes even as far as collecting royalties for radios in public places. Meaning, if you have a restaurant for instance and there is music constantly running - GEMA will want some fees. Every radio or music playing device in Germany ( I think that includes smartphones) has a GEMA fee baked into the price. There is controversy around GEMA too, obviously, but yeah, they try and collect fees from as many sources as they can. And now back to the video.
One thing I can't even fathom to think about is how Nintendo got all the things to get so many tracks into Smash Ultimate. Weren't there like 1000 tracks or something?
For me personally, I don't really get upset about release dates. I just implicitly understand that it's ready when it's ready. Maybe being a musician has something to do with that, as well. Releasing stuff has to be carefully planned and rushing things will always make it worse. I've had stuff I recorded 3 years ago only just coming out because there's been delays and discussions about mixing, mastering, the release schedule, the PR campaign, all of it. And people who complain about delayed games just seems to be another example of gamers being very toxic and entitled, as if there isn't enough games to play already, and a backlog in the hundreds they've just left gathering dust in their steam libraries. I wanna play Silksong too, but I'm not gonna send death threat to team Cherry about I've been "betrayed" in the hope its gonna make them move faster. All the while, I know too well I've got at least several games with incomplete playthroughs, let alone some remain completely untouched.
It seems to me that a lot of the most consistent game developers (Larian, From Software and Nintendo first party), are far less like the film industry than developers who see a lot of turnover. I think the video game industry is currently too variable with its tools and skill sets compared to film. The technical foundations are far more consistent and specialities like VFX and stuntwork can be their own freelance companies that also help standardise the workflow. The industry might get there, but that might come at the cost of shared monopoly.
There's this thing with "I own X" in creative products that is a bit wonky. Disney owns Avengers Endgame. I own a license to watch Avengers Endgame - even if such license is locked into a Blu-ray. Nintendo owns Mario Odyssey. I own a cartridge that holds the license to play Mario Odyssey. Two completely different things - the former allows you to produce licenses, distribute et al. The latter only allows me to sell my license, if said license is allowed to be sold (a digital license cannot be decoupled from my account, whereas a cartridge can).
Unfortunately not - the language was “every game” in the showcase would be out in the next 12 months, and someone tweeted at them to clarify by saying “you’re telling me silksong is out within the next 12 months” and the official Xbox account replied and said “That’s exactly what we said.” Sarah Bond also confirmed it.
@@PlayWatchListen wait they doubled down on it too? that's a bit embarrassing!!! Love the show as always, Rahul naming the cantina band genre gave me a great laugh!
I love the topic but I’m begging you guys to get better audio. You can hear someone clicking their mouse repeatedly, some people are quieter than others, and more. I don’t normally comment on the audio quality but I’ve skipped whole episodes because of the sound issues. I know you’re all just doing this from home but please invest in better equipment, I love the podcast and having to skip episodes because they’re frustrating to listen to is disappointing when you all have been running for years now.
Does anyone have a recommendation for other podcasts like this, where cool people talk about things they care about? I finally watched every PWL episode and I need MORE ❤
Angela and Austin Wintory host Brushes and Keys which is always delightful. Also check out Sad Boyz with Jarvis Johnson and Jordan Adika who are friends with Alanah herself!
Is anyone else found the audio levels this time is out of whack again. Usually Mike's mic level is low, this time his is a few db louder (so loud I think it clipped many times) than Alana's, which usually is spot on but this time, sounds very muted. Likely due to sharing the mic and forgot to adjust the Mic directional. But even Austin's mic level seems much lower than normal. I raise the volume only to hear Rahul only to get deafened by Mike when he talks....please fix it, again. The difference in level is too big, making listening to this uncomfortable, especially when Mike gets excited and then interjects, which he does often.
Assuming you’re talking about the Battlefront mods, I believe he said he didn’t care that they were used in the game, but he *did* care that he wasn’t credited. I could be misremembering though. And regardless whether the mod creator cares, it’s still a shitty thing for a dev studio to do.

Mike was a proper cheeky lad in this one
I think Rahul is remembering the Uncharted 4 controversy which had Concept Art from Assassins Creed on the wall of Nathan Drakes house.
Yep, and it was ONLY present in a trailer. The final game had no such thing in it.
I do remember there was also a shadow of mordor controversy where an animator accused them of copying Assassn's creed climbing animations.
Either that or the controversy around WB paying people to play Shadow of Mordor and be positive about it without disclosing that they had been paid. In this episode of PWL, Austin is technical, Mike uses his experience, Alanah hosts the show! And Rahul joins in with the occasional jab.
Rahul puts out best friend vibes, like you could tell he's easy to get on with.
Mike with strong moustache game. I strongly approve

The audio though😭
