      I work in the US maritime industry, as an unlicensed engine room worker, and I have never seen any discrimination about what you look like. even officers. I've got a nice beard, dreadlocks and a full sleeve on one arm and half sleeve on the other. nobody cares as long as you do your job. I've been on car carriers, military ships, tankers, and a cruise ship. good luck!

      After qualifying and finding my first job I would say so! 21 years old on £34k as a 3rd mate doing 4 months on and 3 months paid leave, obviously this is different depending on which company you join and it can take some time for a newly qualified officer to find work, I was lucky to do a cadetship with the RFA and they took me on afterwards.

      If your a British Citizen and you are outside of the country for more than 6 months a year you can claim your income tax back, there is also ways your company can stop them from taking tax but I am not sure how that works as I only claim mine back once I've done 6 months outside UK Territorial waters

      D. Neal I don’t know about other countries but in the Australian NAVY you can get around $2,000 a WEEK! All medical and dental need are free, for example my Aunty was in it and had to get a $12,000 ankle reconstruction done and it was for free, and by the best surgeon in Melbourne. Also free travel while working, they help pay your mortgage back at home, for example if your mortgage is $400 weekly then they pay $150 so you’re only paying $250. And lastly your superannuation is like 15% of your pay, in the civilian world it’s like 9%

    ATTENTION
    You get a salary ONLY on board. So when you work on contract like 3month ship 3month off and than 3month ship and again 3of = 12 month // you will get 6xsallary not 12 times !!!
    Example:
    Sallary 3000usd
    You work 5months on ship and 3 off.
    12 months = is 5on 3off 4on (1m left and go to another year)
    9on x 3000 = 27 000 per year
    next year:
    1on (from another year)
    3off
    5on
    3off
    6x3000 = 18 000 per year.

      I work 28 days on/28 off on US inland waterways. My company holds half of what I make while I'm underway to pay me on my 28 off. This way, I'm always drawing the same steady paycheck year round. Mariners are also able to save a lot of money while underway, as there's really nothing to spend your money on while on the vessel. When you consider that, plus your six months of essentially paid vacation, its actually a pretty good deal.

    It takes a strong-willed person to be able to be out at sea for months on end, and I applaud those who are in the merchant marine! The only thing I'm confused about is the salary: is it monthly, or is it yearly? If someone knows the answer, that'd be awesome.

    • @robray111
      @robray111 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's fair to assume this would be monthly. For example, $3,500 per month is considered a low or starter income in most places of the US or Canada where there is a port and you might be expected to live during your time off, i.e. San Diego, LA, Oakland, or NYC. Renting a one-bedroom apartment in these places alone would require nearly all your income. Purely from a financial standpoint, this is therefore not the greatest career choice

    These days modern ships require smaller crews to operate them than the ships of yesterday, so should you wish to pursue a career at sea make sure you have the right qualifications, the higher the better to ensure a post. Also, remember that seamen are not at home often so if you intend to have a family life take that into account.

    • @JeffHK

      +Panagiotis Papadopoulos During the OT for 3rd Officer, they usually do maintenance work of their LSA/FFA, which may require you to go on deck - lifebuoys, lifeboats, fire hoses, foam monitor etc. But mostly, officers spend more time on the bridge, for watch-keeping. The ABs will be your lookout during sunset-to-sunrise, otherwise they're the main deck workers.

      Andrew Armijo a 15$ salary is usually 2,400 monthly however when you're working in ship you do get free board and food but you work 7 days a week. So that 600 isn't really that significant.

    Tugboat captain doing ship assist on the West Coast of the US, you're looking at between 500-675$ per day. Excellent schedule, 1 or 2 weeks on and the same off - 180 days a year. When you mentioned the salary in the beginning, did you factor vacation pay? It was net pay right?

    thinking of becoming a sailor myself one day, but for norwegians it dosent look to good (under bided by eastern countries
    just wondering: is it a stable market for work or is it like the rigg life. that you can get fired any day

    • @JeffHK
      @JeffHK  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Pretty stable for those in big companies. Very Stable for thsoe who have license and experience.
      Tougher for cadets trying to join the industry.

    • @JeffHK
      @JeffHK  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I've dont think anyone in this industry can get fired any day (unless deliberately)
      for example, APL went bankrupt and sold off recently. The ships still have to be manned even without business by law, and those crew onboard who sign off will still need to be repalced. So theres always a rotation of people, once you are in the loop, you will have work
      Undercutting by other nationalities' cheaper wages is a long term thing i believe, ie. didn't happen overnight. Ultimately Its up to the flag state (government) to protect their own mariner's interest. For example Transport Canada made a law that Canadian ships can only hire Canadian crew.
      Norwegians tend to have more success in getting hired in cruise line and in the officers department.

    What work would there be for someone with poor night vision? I've got a visual condition where I avoid driving after dark, fine during the day. Drastically limits my career options when I can't do 9-5. A live on site job sounds ideal to me but I'd be a poor night watch. Are engineers expected to hold watch? Other jobs at sea? Scientist?

    How many hours is that pay for (is monthly pay, but do you get paid extra for 40+)? How many hours are you working, How many days a week? What is the most common language on a cargo ship besides english?

    • @FilipinoVibes

      Peter Berger English is the official working language use on board. The contract spans for 6-9 months, the OT depends on the company and ur superiors on board. And it also depends to them if u have work on Sundays for non-watchkeeping personnel.

    • @babybirdhome

      @@Swess2908 But let's be honest - most people will never be captains. A ship only has one captain, and how many crew? More than one - so you'll be competing for that job amongst everyone else on the ship. If you want to get there, be better than those people for that long.

    You gloss over the problem with medical emergencies. A helicopters even the largest ones have limited range and cannot get to a ship in the middle of the ocean. This means someone who is seriously ill may not be life-flight off the ship for several days because the ship has to divert to the nearest port or land and come within range for the coast guard (or equivalent organization) to dispatch a helo to pick up the patient. This is also why companies that do freighter cruises (take on passengers) will not take anyone above a certain age or have a pre-existing medical condition. Some of them even require a physical before they let someone buy passage.
