Busted: Dealing with Security while filming an elevator the right way

  • (5-2-2015) This is how you should deal with security on private property when being asked not to film. In the USA on private property, property owners DO have the right to make rules about photography. You MUST comply if instructed not to take photos, or to leave. They CAN NOT take your camera, demand to see or delete your photos, or detain you. Their only remedy is to ask you to leave. If you refuse to leave or stop taking photos you are guilty of trespassing.

    I'll tell ya something; here in Indonesia, security guards are extremely paranoid due to terrorism, and the craziest thing is that some buildings CAN take your camera or memory card! Even worse, if one got busted because of taking pictures, some greedy shits can demand you to pay before you can leave!

    • @ZHD1987E
      @ZHD1987E 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Singapore we have it worse. They will record your identity card!
      I was busted today in an industrial single-tenant building somewhere in Sembawang. Owner was mad and accused me of trying to break into level 2 when all I did was open and close the lift doors at level 2. Worse is a security guard who accused me of entering machine room when all I did was shine a light INTO the machine room, and NOT opening it!

      Here in UK, some people would just say ‘where are you going’ for no reason, but it doesn’t me that you get busted. We call ‘lifts’ instead of ‘elevators’ in the UK. One time, I was NOT Filming the lift at the car park, I went to the 7th floor by my self, there was 3 lifts (1 was out of order, 1 was very glitchy and 1 was working normally) however, as I was coming down from the 7th floor (I stopped at 4th floor during the trip) I got off because there were people getting on the lift. I wanted to get on it again but later, I got busted by 2 security guards who work at the car park, they said ‘so, you went to the 7th floor (carries on)’ but i left and they would just tell me that I needed to leave but at the end I apologised. I was THANKFULLY let by with the warning. It would get worse Everytime I keep getting busted (location ban could get resulted too!)

    I was recently busted today for filming elevators in a medical office complex with 6 buildings. The security guard on the complex where I got busted could not have been much nicer. She did question me and I told the truth. She also asked about what I do with the videos and I told her about our TH-cam elevator community. Before I left the complex after filming the 3rd building elevator, I asked her if I could please continue on the filming in the complex and she told me she didn't think it was a good idea. I then told her Okay that's no problem. She told me I could talk to her supervisor about filming the rest of the buildings in the complex and that he would escort me. After I left the complex I decided not to bother with them since every elevator in that complex is the same brand, same cab layout and same 2 speed doors. She was so friendly.

      If it is private property, the building owner has the right to ask you to leave their building. If you refuse to leave, that can be considered trespassing. If you are filming and refuse to stop filming when asked to stop, they can ask you to leave. I think they can also ask you to leave if you refuse to delete the videos if asked, but they CAN NOT legally force you to delete your videos.

  • @davidng2336

    Here in NJ and NY there’s a BIG PROBLEM: The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is very nasty to all kinds of photography. Photography is pretty much prohibited on everything they own (WTC, PATH train, airports, bridges, tunnels, transportation terminals, marine terminals, etc), even on public property. If you don’t ask for permission, you can immediately get busted if personnel or the dreaded Port Authority Police Department see you. Basically, if you were to say that photography is not a crime (and it has never been), you will never win, and worse, you may get arrested.

    I’ve never gotten busted for filming an elevator before!!! I watched this video towards the end so that way I’ll know and be prepared in case if I get questioned by anybody who works in the building like manager, employee, security, or the building owner. If that ever happens to me, I’ll explain to them exactly what I am doing so that way they’ll understand.

    There's a guy in the UK known as Ben
    (I think you know about him @diesalducy)
    Who films elevators, but he access restricted floors, and "surfs" them
    I live an hour away from the city of Glasgow, where he has filmed some elevators, he's also "surfed' them.
    FYI, surfing is where you get into the lift shaft, and ride the elevator.
    This guy has a complete disregard for the law.
    You guys (the entire elevator photography community) have the upmost respect for the law etc etc, whereas the guy doesn't!

    Security guards on private land have the right to ask people to stop filming and kick people out (or ban people), but on public land, I don’t think they have a problem with that as you have the right to take pictures in a public area

    I got questioned by an employed for filming some thyseenkrupp elevators at a staybridge suites and it happend before i turned on my camera. The employee asked me if i needed help and he asked me is i was a guest and what room i was staying in and i just told him that i was filming the elevators and he told me to go ahead he was very professional about it. I also had the same thing happen to me at a city hall and they had an awesome 1940s otis black button elevatore before i started filming a lady came over to us and asked if we needed help and my dad told her that we were looking at the elevator and she even said there was another elevator around the corner. Also i used to avoid hi rises with the exception of hotels because i was always worried about getting thrown out.

    People getting busted 95% of the time are about filming or taking pictures. I got busted 4 times and all 4 of them were from people telling me and a friend of mine to not be taking pictures.
    One scenario was by myself visiting for an eye appointment and rode the elevators afterwards. Then a guard yelled at me to not “play on the elevator.” This is probably the worst I handled a bust considering I was 4 years younger. I shut the door while he was yelling about me taking pictures and I immediately deleted the video and left the building.
    The other 3 cases were all on video and every time it was about filming. I was with a friend while waiting for an elevator on the basement. A random guy comes up to us and asks what we were doing. We explained as usual and he of course told us to stop recording and delete the footage. What I did to pass this is delete random videos and not the actual footage and left the building since he has no right on my personal videos.
    The third scenario was the most innocent. A guy entered the elevator and as he was apparently going up and down to inspect floor or something we stopped at multiple floors and I got off on 3 as he did as well when he asked for 2. He was suspicious but then he said I can’t take pictures and that was all. I just left afterwards.
    And the last case was also with a friend. As the doors open with us inside the elevator on 1, security confronts us and asked us do we need help. I hesitated for a second but said no but he followed up with what are y’all here for. We just said we were taking videos of the elevators. And then we got kicked out of the building.
    Just remember, PHOTOGRAPHY IS NOT A CRIME

    • @CenTexElevators489
      @CenTexElevators489 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would think so, because this was an act of ISIS related foreign terrorism, not domestic anger or insanity. And now with 50-60 dead, 40-50 wounded, this shooting supersedes all of the past mass shootings: UT Tower (1966), Columbine (1999), Virginia Tech (2007), Tucson (2011), Aurora (2012) Newtown (2012), and other previous massacres. Plus speaking of photography, I wonder if this terrorist who attacked the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando took pictures of the club before the attack, and I bet the 15th anniversary of 9/11 is going to be much tighter security than the 5th and 10th anniversaries combined.
