@@danarussell1291 Completely understandable. The Live Version of Free Bird just hits different, and I honestly have to say the Oakland Coliseum 1977 is probably the best video of it live. The audience really helps to immerse the viewer into the song and video. You can just close your eyes and imagine being there.
I just love watching young people discover the music of my generation. Just remember, the old guy you see shuffling along most likely rocked to this !!
One of my favorite movies is the Cameron Crowe movie Elizabethtown. The band plays this at the father’s wake. It’s so good. One of the greatest scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie.
I LOVE your reactions! Just a bit of rock&roll trivia...if a band is ever playing on the stage in a club and they ask for requests...DO NOT shout "Freebird!"...there is a good chance they might just jump you...it's just one of those things...it's long, it's complicated, and it's nearly impossible to play perfectly...also, I don't know if you noticed but their first album is literally titled, It's Prounounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd...
Please check out _Freebird_ Live from Oakland Coliseum July 2nd, 1977 concert video... it's significantly better than just hearing the studio version. No question. I promise.
I reacted much the way you did back in 1974 when I heard it for the first time. This was the debut album too. Bad asses all of them, friggin bad asses…RIP boys. All together in Heaven now.
Watching young people reacting to this song when the solo kicks in is my favorite thing! I notice your eyes watering up a little when it kicks in! I heard this song 1000 times and I still get a little watery!
This great but you MUST do the live version Oakland Festival 7/1977. They added a piano, and the performance will amaze you. They lost Ronnie (lead singer), Steve Gaines( guitarist), Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister and backup singer), road manager and pilots in a plane crash. 20 others survived.
The Solo at the end of the song is three separate guitarists. They take turns playing, at times harmonizing with each other while other times battling with one another. It was their signature sound. Listen to Down South Junkin, Gimme Three Steps, I Know a Little, Call Me The Breeze, The Ballad Curtis Leow & their biggest song... Sweet Home Alabama!
Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members in a plane crash in 1977. My favorite songs are "Simple Man", "Free Bird" & "Sweet Home Alabama". They had lots of great songs such as "Call Me The Breeze", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "Saturday Night Special", "Gimme Three Steps" etc.
Wish I could have enjoyed them more when they played in Milwaukee in 1974. We were in Row ZZ, but it was SO loud it was painful. My ears rang for a week after.
I'm so glad that you checked out the studio version First and in general with Lynyrd Skynyrd, those recordings were so amazing and it's what we heard on the radio and we bought the albums and you really deserve to hear it that way. But they were really good live too, and for example the live recording of this song, and I've seen a lot of reactions to it, is from 1977 not long before the plane crash. There are two main versions of it popular on TH-cam and they both are amazing but I think most people prefer the sound quality and just the overall performance itself of Freebird at the concert in Oakland Coliseum.
Exactly. Studio version is almost always best for the first listen. People yellowing about the live version have already heard the studio version 100 times, so they already know exactly how the actual song goes. After that, watching the live performances is great.
I feel like the Oakland recording must have some cuts in the solo, because it crashes really fast into the ending. I always felt it was so hilariously Skynrd that when they were playing Freebird live they'd reach the part that was clearly intended to be the close of the song, but they'd still take like another three minutes actually to finish.
This was played at every single dive bar in the world. Every band had to learn to play this because inevitably, someone in the audience would scream "Free Bird!" at every single bar. Did it for years in the 70s and 80s. lol
In an interview the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant said this song is about the feeling of feeling free like a bird and it is said that this is one of the songs they are really remembered for . Sadly just a couple months ago we lost the last original member of the band Gary Rossington
Their performance of this live, in concert, became so iconic that when you would go to night clubs back in the day - when they used to have live bands - you would almost always hear the crowd shouting "Free Bird!!!", lol.
I was always determined, if I ever formed the band I was always meaning to form, that we'd have a really tight version of Freebird ready, just in case.
What's gonna be even more amazing is that as you listen to this epic song over and over, you will begin to learn to play air guitar, and start hitting the huge licks and jumping around your room ... Your on fire son! great reaction and keep diving into the deep well of classic rock and roll music. Peace to you on your path.
This song was a religion for all rockers not just southerners back then. See the live version for the audience too. They were mesmerized and excited at the same time. Just one of those iconic songs that will go onto each generation
It bothers me when seeing videos of great guitar riffs & this one is left out as one of the top three of all time. Allen Collins perfected this when he was 18 years old. The video of this song at a concert at the Oakland Coliseum in 1977 really shows off the talents of all the guitarists. Steve Gaines also should receive more recognition. What a shame that the plane crash occurred.
There's actually 3 "lead" guitarists and a bass player. 3 band members of the band and their manager died in a plane crash in 1977...one of them was the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. Several others were seriously injured.
You have discovered one of the greatest bands of southern rock who came out of Florida in the 70s!! Good rabbit hole! Curtis Lowe, Tuesdays Gone, and you may know Sweet Home Alabama. Just a few suggestions for you of their music. Thank you Shon! Love your channel!!
So glad you are discovering Lynyrd Skynyrd, one of the most iconic rock bands ever. They sadly were ended with a horrible plane crash in 1977, just as they were continuing a meteoric rise. They just added Steven Gaines and then the damn crash happened. It's one of those very rare bands where I literally like every song off of every album. They're all slightly different from each other and there's a lot of variety but they do have their own unique sound, it's definitely southern rock, but really it's almost in its own category it's so good and so unique to them. It's in the Lynyrd Skynyrd category, know what I mean? And this debut album by them is incredible, but then all of their albums are incredible. Even though the name of this first album is just Lynyrd Skynyrd, it almost immediately became known as the so-called "Pronounced" album.
Leon Wilkeson (Bass player) died on my birthday in 2001. My girlfriend had gotten me tickets to their show that was going to be just a few days later so I got to see their memorial show for Leon. It was an amazing night and they played Free Bird in his honor that night with his tophat and bass under the spotlight for the whole song. The final solo that night went on for 45 minutes
Your first reaction right there, is the same reaction I have to this day when I hear the song and I've heard if hundreds of times. It just hits differently, timelessly, with power and stank. Objectively, this is the greatest Rock and Roll song off all time.
Watch them live in the video in California holy shit, I’m so glad I got to grow up with this music. I’m 64 and they were Definitely the greatest southern rock band of all time ❤
Glad that you reacted to the studio version (1973) first. It's an absolute must to follow it up with their live performance at the Oakland Coliseum on July 2nd 1977, simply a masterpiece.
You have just listened to the greatest rock-n-roll song of all time (imo), the most famous guitar solo ever. I consider them the best guitar band (alongside Eagles) of all time. LS has quite a history including a great tragedy. Their documentary is excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you experience this for the first time. I KNEW you were going to lose your mind!
Also, the name of the band is named for their high school gym teacher! He said that they were kind of problematic sometimes but overall he was fond of them. And he was astonished later when they exploded into unternational stardom. But he apparently always had a soft spot in his heart for them.
Go back to the 70s and the dance floor be like...slow song, couples all wrapped up... then all hell breaks loose and people be flying off the dance floor .
They named their band after their high school coach Leonard Skinner cos he was always on their asses about the dress code, their hair and their rock and roll attitudes. He's now only buried a couple from them at the cemetery. Odd how life works, huh?
Yeah, you've got to react to this live, everything you're hearing in the studio version is actually done as good if not even better! Thanks, this was awesome!
Great reaction BUT you really need to react to the live version at the Oakland Coliseum July 1977!!!! EPIC CONCERT!!! There are 4 guitarists shredding!!!🎵🎼🎶🥁🎤🎙🎸🎹🔥🤘🤘🤘🤘 So much more impressive live!!!
I know most will suggest you go to the live version from Oakland, but I am going to suggest Knebworth live because it’s almost like watching thousands of reactors watching it for the first time. The majority of the crowd at Knebworth are just waiting for the Stones to come on and the change in the crowd from beginning to end is like two opposites sides of the spectrum
Yes - them making their way down the “tongue” stage of The Rolling Stones (which they were told not to do) is classic. Notice bass guitarist Leon Wilkerson could not make it all the way down the tongue. According to Craig Reed( LS roadie aka The Stoned Roadie) they did not have enough extension for Leon’s guitar so he was left behind ha ha.
This is the music I came of age with. Great times. Great music. Now you know what's missing today!! Head back to the 70s for mind blowing music!! ✌️💗🌹 From the Peace, Love and Flower Power Generation 💖 PS....you really want them to stop?????? 🤯🤯🤯
This is the most epic song to see in concert, hands down. I just saw them in concert last week and was blown away by Skynyrd and especially this song !!! Wow ,,,!!!!
Check out Black Oak Arkansas! Songs like Uncle Elijah from their self titled album. Their best album is Raunch N Roll Album from 1973! Songs Hot Rod, Hot and Nasty, Gigolo and the song Up which has the best drum solo by Tommy Aldridge. Aldridge later played with Ozzy Osbourne and White Snake! They also do a bluesy tune called Happy Hooker that will give you a chuckle!

Y'all know Def Leppard? The late guitarist Steve Clarke auditioned for the band in the late 70's with the guitar solo from this amd passed the audition. CLASSIC ROCK.
Happy Thanksgiving Shon! This song is epic! It's especially nice if you watch them play it live, the guitar solo is awesome! I love your enthusiasm! I'm always late to the party! But at least I finally made it! It only took me a year to find this!

Makes me wanna finish your video and go to the real video and listen and appreciate more!! Love it Bro!!
The guitarists name is Allen Collins. Backing Collins on rhythm guitar is Gary Rossington. Besides playing lead guitar, Collins is also #Freebird's co-writer along with Lynyrd front man/lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. Released in 1974 as a single and hitting the no. 87 on Billboards Top 100. The song became the bands second Top Forty, peaking at no. 19 in January 1975. #Freebird is Skynyrds finale and longest song at the end of each LIVE performance. Because of Allen Collins high intensity guitar solo .. #Freebird has been ranked no. 8 on 'Guitar Worlds 50 Greatest Guitar Solo's of ALL Time'. Ya want another 20 minutes!?! ... Then watch their LIVE version in the Oakland Coliseum 1977 ... th-cam.com/video/A4qwPYHkMTw/w-d-xo.html Okay .. so its not exactly 20 minutes long. It's just under 12 minutes and the boys take their audience (and current listeners) on a lengthy instrumental ride. You will also get to see your boy, Allen Collins,(dressed in all white) in action doing his thing on the guitar solo along with Steve Gaines on rhythm and Wilkenson on bass.
Anybody else grin a little when he said “this is my favorite part” and we hadn’t even gotten to the good part?
No one is EVER ready for the beat change
“Is he gon’ stop?”
No. No he is not.

Ya want another 20 minutes!?! ... Then watch their LIVE version in the Oakland Coliseum 1977 ... th-cam.com/video/A4qwPYHkMTw/w-d-xo.html
Okay .. so its not exactly 20 minutes long.
