      @@danarussell1291 Completely understandable. The Live Version of Free Bird just hits different, and I honestly have to say the Oakland Coliseum 1977 is probably the best video of it live. The audience really helps to immerse the viewer into the song and video. You can just close your eyes and imagine being there.

Just a bit of rock&roll trivia...if a band is ever playing on the stage in a club and they ask for requests...DO NOT shout "Freebird!"...there is a good chance they might just jump you...it's just one of those things...it's long, it's complicated, and it's nearly impossible to play perfectly...also, I don't know if you noticed but their first album is literally titled, It's Prounounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd...

    The Solo at the end of the song is three separate guitarists. They take turns playing, at times harmonizing with each other while other times battling with one another. It was their signature sound. Listen to Down South Junkin, Gimme Three Steps, I Know a Little, Call Me The Breeze, The Ballad Curtis Leow & their biggest song... Sweet Home Alabama!

    Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members in a plane crash in 1977. My favorite songs are "Simple Man", "Free Bird" & "Sweet Home Alabama". They had lots of great songs such as "Call Me The Breeze", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "Saturday Night Special", "Gimme Three Steps" etc.

  • @stevedahlberg8680
    @stevedahlberg8680 ปีที่แล้ว +69

    I'm so glad that you checked out the studio version First and in general with Lynyrd Skynyrd, those recordings were so amazing and it's what we heard on the radio and we bought the albums and you really deserve to hear it that way. But they were really good live too, and for example the live recording of this song, and I've seen a lot of reactions to it, is from 1977 not long before the plane crash. There are two main versions of it popular on TH-cam and they both are amazing but I think most people prefer the sound quality and just the overall performance itself of Freebird at the concert in Oakland Coliseum.

    • @jenniferfoster1692
      @jenniferfoster1692 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly. Studio version is almost always best for the first listen. People yellowing about the live version have already heard the studio version 100 times, so they already know exactly how the actual song goes. After that, watching the live performances is great.

    • @davidhills3100
      @davidhills3100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel like the Oakland recording must have some cuts in the solo, because it crashes really fast into the ending. I always felt it was so hilariously Skynrd that when they were playing Freebird live they'd reach the part that was clearly intended to be the close of the song, but they'd still take like another three minutes actually to finish.

    Their performance of this live, in concert, became so iconic that when you would go to night clubs back in the day - when they used to have live bands - you would almost always hear the crowd shouting "Free Bird!!!", lol.

      It bothers me when seeing videos of great guitar riffs & this one is left out as one of the top three of all time. Allen Collins perfected this when he was 18 years old. The video of this song at a concert at the Oakland Coliseum in 1977 really shows off the talents of all the guitarists. Steve Gaines also should receive more recognition. What a shame that the plane crash occurred.

    So glad you are discovering Lynyrd Skynyrd, one of the most iconic rock bands ever. They sadly were ended with a horrible plane crash in 1977, just as they were continuing a meteoric rise. They just added Steven Gaines and then the damn crash happened.
    It's one of those very rare bands where I literally like every song off of every album. They're all slightly different from each other and there's a lot of variety but they do have their own unique sound, it's definitely southern rock, but really it's almost in its own category it's so good and so unique to them. It's in the Lynyrd Skynyrd category, know what I mean?
    And this debut album by them is incredible, but then all of their albums are incredible. Even though the name of this first album is just Lynyrd Skynyrd, it almost immediately became known as the so-called "Pronounced" album.

Notice bass guitarist Leon Wilkerson could not make it all the way down the tongue. According to Craig Reed( LS roadie aka The Stoned Roadie) they did not have enough extension for Leon’s guitar so he was left behind ha ha.

    Check out Black Oak Arkansas! Songs like Uncle Elijah from their self titled album. Their best album is Raunch N Roll Album from 1973! Songs Hot Rod, Hot and Nasty, Gigolo and the song Up which has the best drum solo by Tommy Aldridge. Aldridge later played with Ozzy Osbourne and White Snake! They also do a bluesy tune called Happy Hooker that will give you a chuckle!

    I GREW UP ON THIS MUSIC! And there will never be anything better than what came out the 70s and the 80s! I consider myself privileged to have lived through it!

    This one got my subscription... and your Led Zeppelin reacts. After this you need to see "Free Bird" Live at the Oakland Coliseum. As incredible as this is, it's even better live. You'll be blown away.

    Y'all know Def Leppard? The late guitarist Steve Clarke auditioned for the band in the late 70's with the guitar solo from this amd passed the audition. CLASSIC ROCK.

      Without stopping and watch without looking away. It is evil to pause Stevie Ray on that Texas Flood.

    The guitarists name is Allen Collins. Backing Collins on rhythm guitar is Gary Rossington. Besides playing lead guitar, Collins is also #Freebird's co-writer along with Lynyrd front man/lead singer Ronnie Van Zant.
    Released in 1974 as a single and hitting the no. 87 on Billboards Top 100. The song became the bands second Top Forty, peaking at no. 19 in January 1975.
    #Freebird is Skynyrds finale and longest song at the end of each LIVE performance. Because of Allen Collins high intensity guitar solo .. #Freebird has been ranked no. 8 on 'Guitar Worlds 50 Greatest Guitar Solo's of ALL Time'.
    Ya want another 20 minutes!?! ... Then watch their LIVE version in the Oakland Coliseum 1977 ... th-cam.com/video/A4qwPYHkMTw/w-d-xo.html
    Okay .. so its not exactly 20 minutes long. It's just under 12 minutes and the boys take their audience (and current listeners) on a lengthy instrumental ride. You will also get to see your boy, Allen Collins,(dressed in all white) in action doing his thing on the guitar solo along with Steve Gaines on rhythm and Wilkenson on bass.
