    Supporting an author's debut work can be so important for their future success! Thank you for sharing these promising books and for promoting black authors!

    New to the channel. it's so hard to find a good youtube channel reviewing books written by POCs by a WOC. Beautiful job! You'll have to dedicate an episode to the casseette tapes on the back wall, so very intrigued.

      Thank you Jacqueline! Love my music and it reflects my life, although probably not a lot of people's taste. LOL! Thanks for commenting and supporting! :)

    Stumbled across your channel and was so happy to see someone reviewing books by black writers! We have a publishing company and excited to increase the number of Black writers in the world.
    Also, we are hosting an event in Paris next year to bring together brilliant minds, activist, and storytellers from across the African Diaspora. Would love to connect with you!

    I just had to smile when you said 40 acres, because I remembered how much you raved about it. :)
    So many nice books, I just bookmarked the whole video instead of writing a list!

    I love your booktube channel, it's one of my favorites! That's all. I trust your opinion. I'm scared to pick up Ordinary People (I saw your review on another video). I've picked up all these books you've discussed now.

    Wow, a lot of really great books! I'm definitely putting a lot of these on my radar (like Ghana Must Go)!
    I really liked "Push" by Sapphire, I thought that was a great debut novel. I'm actually planning to read the follow up to that soon.
    Loving #ReadSoulLit! I started Octavia E. Butler's "Parable of the Sower" last night.

    • @browngirlreading

      I still haven't read Push yet, but it is on my TBR. I don't own it, the same for Parable of the sower.

    All those books sound great. I just saw The Supreme's at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat at my local library on Saturday. I didn't really know anything about it but now that you talked about it I'm going to grab it next time I'm in there, most likely next week. I own Ruby and I've heard mixed things about it. I'll have to give it a try soon!

Loving forward... hold vibrations high focusing conversations around what we are reading and not that of others. Remember, we must tell our own stories, supporting and celebrating our own heritage. Besides, everybody is not welcome at the kitchen table. Peace. #ReadSoulLit!

    K, here's the thing. I am SOOOO busy with school reading that I can't feasibly read an entire book for fun in February. BUT, I am going to START one and hopefully finish it in March. Is that cheating? I hope not. I was thinking WILD SEED by Octavia Butler.

    I love your expression in some parts, trying not to say too much about the plot but maybe smiling a bit while you're talking about the books - makes me want to pick those ones up even more! Excellent video! I've definitely got some new books to check out. I read Ghana Must Go (side note: that UK cover is gorrrrrgeous) last year. It started rather slow for me and I wasn't loving it, but I'm glad I stuck with it because I did end up liking it overall. Basically I agree with everything you said about that one and I would read another book by Taiye Selasi. Also, you've given me a suggestion for my BHM video. I'm definitely going to look up The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives because that fits in nicely with my theme!

    They all sounds so interesting, especially Forty Arces. I gotta get my hands on that novel Asap. Twelve tribes of Hattie has been on my radar for a while now, however, I'm a little apprehensive about that one., like you've said it has gotten mixed reviews. I heard it was told in multiple perspectives, which makes the continuity hard to follow. However, I might give it a chance.Thanks for the recommendations Di.

    My book club read The Twelve strikes of Hattie and I missed it so still need to read the book. The consensus was that the book was just "okay" but. I agree with you and am going to give it a try. On another subject, Oprah just chose Ruby for her book club pick so that is going to bring many, many more readers to that author. It will be interesting to see what the mass public think of it.

    • @browngirlreading
      @browngirlreading  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still don't think Ruby is for the masses. way too depressing... But it's Oprah. The masses will read anything for her. I just want Cynthia Bond to put out her second book soon because I won't be rereading Ruby again just to read book 2. In the end it's good for Ms. Bond!

    • @KathleenAnnBooks
      @KathleenAnnBooks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am anxious for book 2 also and what she will come up with for her characters. You are right about the power of Oprah but I bet a lot of people will have a hard time reading that book. I really liked the book but it put me through hell to read it.

    Great recommendations. Some of these I'd never heard of and others I need to get to this summer when I get home.
    Long Division is forever my favorite. I wouldn't call Long Division young adult even though the main characters are kids. There are plenty of adult books with child main characters that aren't called YA which makes me that someone needs to really define what exactly YA is. lol.
    I hauled Virgin Soul a few months ago but it's in Chicago so I can't read it yet! :-(
    I need to pick up Before you suffocate your own fool self. I write and study short stories and am always looking for new things.
    I'm surprised that more people aren't talking about #readsoullit concerning all the talk about reading more diversely like @onesmallpaw said. It would be nice to see it not mainly be just black booktubers but you know...

    Do you recall what many of the downgrade reviews found that they didn't like about Tribe? Just curious because I wonder if it's because of how fragmented it may feel to others. I know for me I went into it enthusiastic about each of Hattie's children's stories.

    I don't keep a tbr on goodreads as I get stressed seeing the ever growing numbers when I log in, but I do keep a notebook and have added a few to the list. Really interested to hear your thoughts on 'Saint Monkey', the cover is stunning :D

      Thanks Leanne! Noted for Saint Monkey. I know what you mean about TBR list that lengthen daily. I don't worry about it anymore. I think I've accepted that new books are being published everyday and I'll probably never catch up with it.

    I had heard of Virgin Soul before when I was listening to Against the Grain (www.againstthegrain.org/program/706/tues-43013-panther-sister). Since then I had forgotten about it because I never saw or heard it mentioned anywhere else.

      Hey Brie! Where've you been? Hope you're well. Yes Virgin Soul came out and drowned. I'm curious to read it and see what it's like. It can't be that bad.

    Have you read We Need New Names? I don't remember if I've seen you talking about it, but it's also a good debut novel. I was thinking for a long time about picking up Ghana Must Go but I think I've seen somebody, I don't know if it wasn't you;-) giving it a mixed review and I guess I gave the idea up. Great video Didi, I love it.

      Yes I did read and review We Need New Names. First half very promising the second half not so much but I think I gave it 4 stars for the beautiful writing. Ghana Must Go is a tough read. I'm not sure you'd like it.

    Can you do a review of Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison, Please?

    • @browngirlreading
      @browngirlreading  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't read it in years. I'd need to reread it to do a review. But who knows maybe I'll decide to re-read all of Morrison's fiction novels and review them.That's a thought.

    How is it being a woman of color and living in France? Thinking of moving to Germany temporarily to experience the country, then decide should i stay or not. Just would love some feedback from someone that looks like me that lives in Europe and is used to the culture vs someone that was merely a tourist for a week lol. Hope to hear from you soon!!

    • @browngirlreading
      @browngirlreading  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it's different form living in the US. At times I really love it. My husband is white French and I don't fell I have to explain who we are or what we're doing together or about our daughters. Race is not a central part of our lives, however there is racism here and there is also a conscious effort to not show back actors in movies for cinema and tv unless it's what they want to show. There are no black people at all on television here! So I guess up could see it's out of sight out of mind attitude. That part I hate!

Send it to me and I'll do my best to do an honest review here on my channel for the release date. Go to my wordpress blog where you can find my email. My blog is www.browngirlreading.com

      I don't usually read romance novels but you should go over to Musical Tati or FreeFormLady's channels. I think they will be able to give you some good recommendations.

I'd like to suggest The Dangerous Diamonds. Its a rich girl Sorority, harboring a mystery that goes way back to the year 1816 and continues today. Toy a Asian -African American is old now. But her grand daughter Tracy's best friend Nukia will discover her past through the very young woman who wants to join them Sametria. Semetria in the meantime is drawing the eyes of Princeton the man she wants. So no way she's letting her in. Besides Sametria later learns why the Sorority's called Dangerous. Read for yourself what makes The Dangerous Diamonds so dangerous. Especially when the very first infamous Dangerous Diamond Essa Gates comes across the likes of Harriett Tubman herself.
