Black and British was one of my favourites of this year!!! Its AMAZING. Hahah I read it in a week because it was just such mindblowing information - so many omissions in the british history I was taught. Also written really well how he introduces historical figures and tell you personal things about them and then places them in the wider context makes it so readable. I love this book its fantastic!! There is also a recently published synthesis for young readers that is only 180pages and illustrated. I lent my book to my dad now so he can read too! I really want to read the warmth of other suns and heavy! Thanks for recs.

I am new to your channel and I can already tell I'm in trouble! The passion in which you speak about the books send me to Amazon so fast it's scary. Lol. On your recommendation I have ordered "The Last Thing you surrender" and it will be here the 31st. Now going to binge your videos and see how much money I will be spending today courtesy of your reviews. Lol.

“Clutching pearls I didn’t have!” That is a great way to describe the experience while reading The Last Thing... It was one of my top books in 2020 as well. I could not stop talking about it. I made my sister read it and to this day if you mention that book when we are in the room it’s like a 15-minute gush fest!! Didi you had a great reading year despite the madness 2020 presented. Heavy has been on my list since I listened to the author on a panel in Zoom. The things he discussed made me want to get his book right then and there. So I will make it a point to get to it this year. I own both Sugar and Girl Woman Other but haven’t cracked them open. This will be rectified. Thanks for a wonderful video. So happy you are making them again.

What a good reading year you had, Didi. The Last Thing You Surrender was so engaging that it didn't seem that long at all. Unfortunately, couldn't get Freeman in time for the readalong, but I will definitely read it. As well as Heavy. What I DID get, though, were the four graphic novels of The Arab of the Future. Can't wait to read Caste by Isabel Wilkerson. I finally read Sugar this year - packed a punch! Want to get Black and British, of course, at some point. Thanks for all your wonderful recs.

You persuaded me to read Sugar and I have just been gifted (as I asked for it), Manchester Happened as now, I too, want to read everything that Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi has written! I adore David Olasogu and am currently reading Black & British too. My five star reads this year have been Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World by Elif Shafak, Remembered by Yvonne Battle-Felton and a re-read of one of my favourite novels of all time - Small Island by Andrea Levy which I listened to on Audible as Andrea Levy reads it herself. Thank you for your mature perspective. I grew up with passive aggressive white Mormon women who don't read and are addicted to toxic positivity. I didn't know that a wise, caring woman who thinks and communicates clearly, and who won't patronize people, existed. I have been mostly away from watching booktube for a while because I was watching without reading. Now that I've exceeded my reading goal, I would like some balance. So, I'm back too. I agree about November being a month where we all needed a break. I'm not absorbing my current nonfiction read. I'm just too tired. I still haven't read The Last Thing You Surrender. I took a break from homework to watch the livestream. That's how I found your channel. I've been pushing nonfiction about race and American history, but this seems like it would be so realistic.

Can I thank you again for introducing me to Bernice McFadden? 'Sugar' was recently confirmed as my favourite read that I've ever had. I find it hard to compile a top 10 of all time. With the books I consider as the best of all, a couple of books bounce around in the No.1 position. But no other book has had me cry at the end, cry the day after when thinking of it, and cry a week later when thinking of it. 'Sugar' did all that.

Twitter is having the historical accuracy again, I’m just going to start replying with a picture and link to Black and British. It sounds way more readable than African Europeans was (the information was good but it was very academic). I still think about Heavy, that was such a good book.
