in my mind, a player with a “lack of skill” is simply a player that has an over reliance on leveraging their physical gifts. shaq is an obvious example of this because his entire game revolved around simply being bigger and stronger than everyone around him. it is so clear cut and dry that shaq became even more dominant when he got fatter because good luck boxing out a 330lbs monster that was over 7’ tall. if you put shaq’s skill set into a smaller player, he pans out to be tristan thompson.
if you take away kevin durants height, he still pans out to be on the level of like mitch richmond because the skills he cultivated still translate despite taking away his physical gifts.
but i agree there are no NBA players that aren’t skilled and that “less skilled players” doesn’t mean that those players aren’t great for maximizing their game around their physical gifts.

I'm watching this vid about a year after its release, as the topic of "skill" has resurfaced in recent media topics concerning Kyrie and KD's "skills".
The right way to approach this is to first use the term "offensive skills", and to then clearly list the skills of interest:
    - dribbling
    - shooting
    - post moves
    - footwork
    - passing
    - finishing (layups, dunks)
    - driving
    - ability to create space
Also, one needs to differentiate between "being really good at one thing" and "being really good at several variations of one thing" (e.g. compare Kawhi's signature tomahawk dunk to the arsenal of dunks of a young Iguodola).

This was so great! This felt like I was listening to a philosophy course on basketball.
And your point is very valid. Giannis, while being severely underdeveloped in arguably the most important skill in basketball (shooting) is still very skilled. You could be even bigger stronger and faster than Giannis and you're not going to put up 30ppg in the NBA if you're not also skilled. Giannis just focused on developing his dribbling and ability to finish at the rim because that is what his physical gifts could leverage the most.
Believe it or not, but aside from fade aways, shooting benefits very little from height and raw athleticism. Like yeah being taller helps you shoot over guys like KD, but there's a reason why the best shooters at the Y are the old men with knee braces.
Giannis is skilled, he's just not a skilled shooter.

But I have some better examples my other Brother's Brother in law played against Marc Gasol in high school. My second Brother played soccer on a high level and played against one the best US soccer players of all time Clint Dempsey, that Brother was good enough to play in the MLS but he had some injuries that forced him to stop playing.

    What is skill to me
    Skill is IQ
    Leadership
Shot IQ (knowing when and where to shoot based on your ability)
    Court vision
(Positioning) Knowing where to be on the court and when
On ball and off ball IQ (offense and defense)
Knowing how to use your physicality to create space and or block off routes
    Ball handling and ball security
    Pass vision and pass IQ
    Dunking, layups, short ranging finishing
    Post up IQ
    And of course Jump shooting
Just because you don’t have one of them doesn’t make you unskilled. Basketball isn’t just black and white, there is a lot of nuance that makes you skilled

Also, defense requires skill. We’ve seen a lot of players who have the right physicals to be a great defender (Andrew Wiggins) who turned out to be horrible on that side of the ball. Giannis is dominant on that side of the ball, so he must have at least some skill.

I will never understand, some are just vehement that slashing requires less skill than shooting. Being an elite slasher at the NBA level requires very good ball handling with both hands, and you have to be able to switch hands quickly and often every single game because the other team will quickly notice if you can't. You also have to be good at protecting the ball from multiple defenders trying to swipe it away, since you are actively seeking contact with them and are in more danger of turning it over. There is no way it's less skillful. Anyone who's actually tried it knows that trying to keep the dribble going through crowd after crowd of defenders without losing the ball even once, is extremely challenging and exhausting.

MENTALITY IS SKILL!!!! Just because you can train to improve your physical attributes and you mentality doesn’t mean mentality is an attribute or in a grey area because most nba players train to get better at their skills too like shooting, dribbling, and IQ, they had to train for that but mentality is the most important skill because imagine if say Kobe didn’t have the mamba mentality, would he have the rings and the awards, HELL NAH HE WOULDNT

Giannis is skilled. Shaq is skilled, but they are skilled on the two dimensional plane of basketball. They’re basically skilled “for their size.” The fact of the matter is they’re the type of skilled where if they aren’t who they are they won’t be dominant. If you take 6 inches off of Michael jordan, Lebron james, or Kevin Durant, they’re so skilled that they could still be stars

1:57 let’s be real most people in the nba can’t run down the middle of the court and score with nba level defenders swiping at the ball or blocking you off. There is a lot of skill in that. It’s called ball security and court vision. Those are skill most people don’t have

Skill is easy to define when looking at certain players. I make this point with Lebron regularly: If everyone in the NBA had the same physical build as LeBron james, Lebron james would be riding the bench. The dude is 36 and just now he has the basketball IQ Jordan and Kobe had in their mid 20s.

Ok so in my opinion mindset is not a skill a skill is something you develop and mindset is something that is shaped by your surroundings okay for ex. Javale both parents we’re good enough to play basketball at the highest level and he probably grew up needing very little in life. But Giannis grew up an immigrant in a foreign country and had to struggle to survive and I mean struggle so for him it’s all or nothing he’s seen struggle he’s been down bad and he not going back. That’s why In my opinion Giannis is better he is willing develop parts of his game that mcgee never needed but Giannis did.

giannis doesnt have alot of basketball skill honestly he has great basketbal size, the epitome of basketball skill with good basketball size is people like dirk and kd who despite being large enough to use their height to just slam the ball down they actually worked on their craft and techniques to score other ways which takes skill. giannis and ben simmons arent good shooters because they never learned much basketball besides using their size their advantage

hey theres something i believe is also very important in all sports and could be very applicable to javales and ginnais case. sorry for butchering all the words, but i think that natural aptitude should be considered. What i mean by this is things like coordination inteligence reaction not related to the sport but overall. When I first started playing I joined with a friend who was much more athletic than me and would destroy me every time but when we started training i started to create sort of 2k animations. What i want to say is that i started doing sharp fluid and fast dribble moves layups and everything, while my friend who was much more athletic and had a nack for sports wouldnt be able to have these "animations". When watching giannis and javale you see that javales moves are much more janky and its not due to a lack of training as all of the players have thousands of hours put into the game, its due to thins natural inclination to certain things. I havent explained my point in the best way but i think its something rarely talked about
