  • Art2Life.com - Do you feel freedom when you make art? Is the process life-giving or life-draining? A big part of ease in art-making has to do with how we think about it. It’s not hard to get so bogged down by our own thoughts that we lose objectivity. Today’s episode continues a conversation I’ve had for 25 years with my dear friend Steve Lomprey. He’s a multimedia artist whose mediums include painting, videography, and music. Join us for an encouraging discussion about humanity, freedom, and taking a 40,000-foot view of life and art.

Amazing conversation! I love conversations like this because it helps give me permission and confidence. That being an artist is a precious gift. Express yourself fully and completely! I just pray that I can make a living doing this🙏. I am an artist. That is me and how I express myself creatively. I can do other jobs but it feels like letting myself and the world down.

I really relate to the idea of giving yourself freedom. I used to feel pressure on vacations or trips to take art materials with me - to constantly be creative or inspired. But what I've come to realize is that the inspiration is just in be-ing. Forest bathing/ just being in nature and experiencing the spaciousness of it. After a few days it's almost as if my mind unlocks. Then I can come back and the creativity and inspiration flow.

I think that part of what Steve Lomprey is saying is embodied in John Lennon's song "Imagine".
    Imagine there's no countries, etc.

Steve Lomprey had so very many things to say, thoughts and feelings, that resonate awfully well with my experience of art making. Thank you very much, Nicholas (or Nick?), for posting this beautiful conversation.

When l was little orange was my favourite colour l was convinced it was the best colour so thanks for confirming that! But seriously so helpful to hear your discussion, gives encouragement and insight to move forward. I think being free to be yourself and also accepting what we are not. Thank you.

I've had the opportunity this past year to spend alot of time alone...it's amazing how many of these ideas have come into my thoughts and trying to incorporate them into my life.

I so much love this conversation. Talking about his formative years and being exposed to all the creativity at such a young age. How wonderful.... to live in an artist 'colony'.... I so wish that could have been the case for me. I grew up in such an opposite environment. It took away any feeling of freedom in creativity and I was frowned upon by my 'clan'. When you grow up like Steve Lomprey, nothing is strange or odd. All seems to be accepted and you can be genuinely free. Thank you for sharing this.
