    Thanks for the update, Ed. I believe that every member of the Steam Shop team is working their best to restore operation on the 844 & 4014. I understand that 3985 must wait its turn but many of us can be consoled once the FEF and the Big Boy are safely back online for special train work. Kudos to all...!

    Awesome to see the work, innovation, creativity and dedication of the Steam Crew. So many of us railfans have no real idea of what is involved in restoration and maintenance of steam equipment. Hat's off! Wish there were more, but sure do appreciate the updates! Thanks to UP, Ed and all involved.

      Union Pacific Question. When you all finish rebuilding 4014 and repairing 395 and 844, do you have any plans of triple heading 844, 3985, and 4014 over Sherman Hill?

    One thing I like about UP, is that they still treat the steam engines as one of their roster.
    They talk about the engines, not as a historical restoration project, but more as an over-due repair. I'll always love SP, but UP for all its faults respects its history.
    Be it a whole roundhouse of steamers, or a fleet of modern diesels dedicated to fallen flags.
    Hopefully 4014 and 844 will be working the grade again soon.
    Oh and 3985, yeah, UP doesn't care about her anymore. Since she's technically only the second biggest loco on an active fleet, she doesn't get the publicity anymore.

    Great update. Have you folks thought of setting up a water conditioning car and using some type of forced air drying system when the locomotives are off line? I work with steam plants and understand the need for clean pure water with the right chemical properties and proper lay up to prevent damage when they are not steaming. When I saw the video of what you were seeing on the boilers, it make me think of what I do to prevent that kind of damage.

    Now as long standing fan of the 844, the 3985 and the 4014, and I can not forget to mention the Southern Pacific 4449 Daylight..... I know the 3985 has been down a lot longer than the rest, and oddly enough running up against the federal maintenance overhaul deadline on the 844 was a huge setback as they were prepping for the 4014 project, so I know a lot of people are wondering if they are going to see these trains again.....
    3985 has already been said to have been put on hold until the ongoing project of the 844 and 4014 are completed in the next couple years. With that being said however, they are doing the 844 and the 4014 side by side, because it looks to me, as they both need the same work done and basically need all the same parts to be retrofitted or made new altogether, so its possible that they may roll out 844 and 4014 at the same time (estimated around 2019-2020), so im going to say its going to be a while before we really see them again, but still inventively watching their progress is an enjoyment for me

      @likestallwomen 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MustangRacerZX Yeah and 611 got back up and running in 9 months while 3985 is not mentioned in the video, goes to show you how great the UP Steam Program is now!

    •  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Danny Lawson aside from doing a major overhaul on one locomotive and completely rebuilding another, UP is renovating the entire steam shop
      they are removing all of the diesel infrastructure and turning the shop into a true steam locomotive facility with cranes, drop tables, machine tooling etc
      that shows you how great the UP Steam Program is now

    • @likestallwomen
      @likestallwomen 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shop was fine when Steve and the guys where there, they were fine when the guys before them where there, you wanna try to prove somethin' else?

      Danny Lawson You have a problem with ed... pretty obvious.... Great to spout opinion when you dont know facts. Grow up and let it go.

    • @likestallwomen
      @likestallwomen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uh, the facts pretty much says it right there, besides, I never met him, but from what I heard and what's been going on, the guy doesn't know how a steam locomotive works, all this talk about steam engines is great, but doesn't know the know how on how to properly work on them and all that, sorry, not holding water at all!

  • @BCSchmerker
    @BCSchmerker 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've a feeling that the UP will need fair-capacity desalination plants at the largest terminals to support the steam program properly, given what we know of the corrosion that sidelined #844 (the Sierra has a down-size version of this same problem, which resulted in corrosion contingency work on the in-overhaul (as of July 2015) #28). Hopefully #3985 can solo the rest of the 2015 excursion season; #4014 won't be ready for another four years.

    • @BCSchmerker
      @BCSchmerker 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the correction info; I assumed hard water to be a contributing factor to, if not the primary cause of, the three Americans' known corrosion issues. California could use a lot of desalination capacity right now, with the four-year drought; and the UP will need a portion thereof for the steam excursion program.

    Will 4014 be converted to run on natural gas?

      most likely oil if it is converted at all. Natural has would require so many modifications it would take away the preservation aspect.

      Oh ok, well the other situation is also her centipede tender (844) and come to think of it, why did they come with Centepide Tenders and everyone knows those things got only a turning truck up front, not inn the back, I bet a lot of UP Crews that worked steam could tell stories on how rough it was to back up the Northerns, Big Boys, and Challengers since those 3 models were the ones that had them!
