This show features a bunch of my old mates including the always missed Steve Robson and Glen Hadden. We were Walhalla bound and went on a fair dinkum adventure rocking the High Country that combined history, great camping, beautiful scenery and some awesome four wheeling. Tim Bates came along on one of his first gigs with 4WD Action and his knowledge of the country he loves injected a new level of understanding into this wonderful part of Australia's bush.
Check it out and enjoy - and here's a few tips to plan your own High Country adventure.
When to go: The summer months (between November and May) are best for exploring the High Country as many tracks are cut off during winter. Never fear, you’ll still get plenty of water crossings and it’ll probably rain every second day anyway!
Where to go:
Albury/Wodonga is the usual kick off for most High Country trips, especially if you’ve come from interstate. From there it’s pretty much due south for a hundred or so kilometres. Melbournians have plenty of options including the turning left off the Princes Highway anywhere near Sale. Check the maps, you’re going to need one to do anything more than peddle between the towns!
Camping:
Hundreds of brilliant camp sites throughout the region but note that fire restrictions are often in place - no surprise given the amount of timber lying around! And be prepared for plenty of wet camping - big tarps, lots of poles and a stack of pegs are mandatory. There are pit toilets throughout the region - often provided by other four wheel drivers and clubs - and buckets of running water almost everywhere.
Fuel and Supplies:
Depending on which direction your High Country attack comes from obviously. Be aware that most of the smaller regional towns have excellent shops and some of the best shopping is to be found in the smaller towns like Omeo and Dargo where often you’ll find the things on offer are more suited to High Country extremes than your usual run of the mill city hardware. Expect to use twice the amount of fuel for any given distance once you’re on the tracks and take advantage of every fuel outlet to top up. Remember, spend your money in the smaller towns if possible - if 4WDing seen as part of their local economy, the tracks are more likely to stay open!
Clothing:
With incredible climatic contrasts possible it pays to take your warmest clobber - beanies, gloves and woollies - but leave room for the swim suit and thongs too. Pack your clothes in water proof bags or boxes.

Highest quality wheeling, presenting, location, all facets. I must have watched this 50 times, never gets old (I'm a high country regular). Tim's a legend too, met him a few times out there
This is still one of the best trips i did with the 4WD Action crew.
Great tracks and a great bunch of people.
Was just this spot today Tim, with Trig being closed. Follwed CMF track to north east trk, then back down Dream Creek trk. Love that place. Gotta love when work sends me out there
@@scowievideos7931 Unreal mate. if your work is sending you into places like that area.
Great tracks and that was a top trip.
Jack was a great dog. Probably saw more of Australia than most Australians ever will.
Yeah, amazing animal, bush bred dingo mixed - but he never learnt to read those 'no dog' signs...
Ooooh...that old girl Milo, love it when she climes those mountains with her trusty 13B-T... Cheers, H
Back in the day when 4wd Action was good and not a 40min episode of Advertising
Must say that must b 1 of the only times I've seen tim without his hat🤠
RIP to Steve great video Roothy
Man, that black grenadier is so capable off road.
Batesy killin’ it again . Tim Bates
Loving the old videos roothy

The shot of Buller at 43:18 is epic too
I can’t believe it....... what are you doing on 4WD-27 Tim!!! Great to see you on it with your Patrol!
Very early days mate.
Patrol is still going strong.
Seeing this vid brought back memories of when I wheeled up around this part of the bush .Makes me want to go 4x4 Thanks Roothy and the crew for another great show 👍👍👍👍.
Hi John, what a great video. I've grown up watching yourself an others drive some great tracks next time your in the high country I'd be over the moon to come see an even show you some great tracks. Kind regards Warrick Zanner.
My neck of the woods Roothy, live in the hills just south of Walhalla.
Beaut spot, especially on my Husaberg 570.
I don't take it for granted, bloody love it.
Great hat by the way👍👍
Thanks mate, enjoy🍺
It's amazing how this part of Australia is just like my backyard here on the other side of the planet!
Thanks Roothy!
The world - just an amazing place - we've got everything over here in Aus!
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY yep!
Such a great watch, and love the woodspoint Mattlock area... what a way to wrap up a trip.
And just so you know, that's the only kind of beer.
Wish it tasted like it did back then.
Gotta love the vic high country
Good memories of my year out 4wd in those hills with great mates
Love seeing Milo again and the old trip vids! Cheers
Love it, great video, well done
Wow Roothy. You sound so much like fellow Aussie Peter Russell Clarke and even look a bit like him too!
I still have this on DVD somewhere
love it, i live about 20 mins from walhalla so this was pretty cool to see
You lucky lucky bugger!!!
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY trig track has just recently been closed off
I grew up watching this old videos 👍
Holy Dooley! Roothy doing a Yeti impersonation !!!!
Onya Mate great Vid !
Congratulations on 50k subscribers.
Onya Steve legend was always giving the lux the berries
That camera car lifting both front wheels is the most scary things i have ever seen. Good thing nobody rolled down the Hill and got to laugh about it later!
That's it isn't it - as long as you do get to laugh about it later!
It's amazing where a vehicle can go in 2wd on low pressures.
Sure is mate, always like to see how far I can get before flicking the short stick 👍
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY I lost the front diff In my pk ranger without realising it to start with but low 3rd full noise on a slight hill clued me in to that fact. I didn't need the winch or 4wd much to get out on 15psi and ko2's surprisingly.
That huk strew looks questionable, I gotta try it one day haha
Have a bloody look at young Batesy! Hahaha
In a bad spot in the bush, Australian for “I’m towing a camper” 😂
Question. Where is the mahindra camera car. ❓❓❓
There's some steep bits on Fulton's all right. No place for street spec 4WDs.
Too right mate!
I thought Milo got put into a museum ??
What year was that?
Whatever happened to roosystems?
Glen sold Roo and started Zeus Tuning.
tim has reduction gears in low gear that's why he drives the tracks so Elsey
Jeez look how quiet Glenno is 😂
11 ads !!! WTF
I only got 3
Love these old clips - pity they were filmed with a potato 🥔....
I really do dislike glamper trailers
You missing the OLD GIRL yet mate?
Like you wouldn't believe - Handbrake and I were riding over to see her last month but covid stoppped that! Miss her like she's part of me.
Anyone got an intinery for this video, I think I'm missing a few things
Ha! Sorry Steve, it was years ago and I've forgotten most of what went on - other than I'd go back tomorrow! cheers mate
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY thanks roothy. What's your latest stuff now. What has replaced low range? I am just starting to get into 4wd driving
Roothy what's that racoon doing on yer head?
Bloody cold mate for a warm blooded Queenslander 😬
Another example of ambition beating brains...........camper trailers have no business in that country, just stuffing the tracks and blocking the roads for everyone else.
Or possibly advertising paying the way - Steve Robbo did an amazing job getting that thing through!
