Greatest 5-series ever made, with lots of hidden features as I'm just finding out! Though I think this video was shot not in 2000 but 1998 or 99 the car has the M52 engine and earlier style lights.

E39 is a great car - i had 528i 13 years ago. Functional, good lookin, and created mostly by engineers, not accounts.

It looks like the hydraulic force pushing it up was pretty strong though, that's probably why he did it.
I’ve owned about four BMWs from that era. You need to close the trunk in that manner because there is a cut out for your fingers to grab.

The E39 its the last true 5 series It was One the ultimate driving machines in BMW's line up in the late 90s and early 2000s (its my Dream car)

I got my 528i e39 as a project. Dropped 800 on engine restoration, hoses and all that nice stuff. Don’t regret it at all, runs like a beast
The E39 in my opinion is the best looking and timeless 5 Series ever built by BMW. The built quality is top notch and second to none. It's amazing how 20+ years car still turn heads anytime a well kept one passes by. It's indeed a masterpiece and deserves a top podium position in the BMW hall of fame.

Truly the best Bimmer ever made
its insane how much electronics and accessories there is in one of these i own one myself and did not now 75% of all that. :,), and they were extremely before their time, they still compete with some modern cars in comfort and such imo.
This thing was really ahead of its time. You could totally live with this today if you didn’t need Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Easily solved by an aftermarket OEM looking head unit.

Just bought my 97 528 for a steal. The leather and wood are still immaculate and the engine is virtually silent. What a beast.

I can remember when the E39 came out and you could hardly get one - my Dad bought a Calypso Red 523i SE in 1997 and it was easily the best car in its class - it even had the GSM car phone!

I've had an E39 528i ('99 year) and have an E39 M5, (also '99 year), both of which could and can close all of the windows on the remote.

I can confirm that. Works with the remote on my 2002 e39. But not on my 1997 e39 (with the older infrared remote key)
I can close and open windows with a remote in a 1999 E46 and a 2002 E53. First one is an old style key, second one is the new one.
I've owned my E39 530i for 6 years.. I've learned a bunch watching this 👐

I parked my car and went to a shop today and when I came back, I saw three car from across the road and I was like "Damn, that's a good looking car!".
I own a Audi Q5 and a brand new Audi A3, and yet im fascinated by a video about a very old BMW.
This car got me so many dates. Loved it.
I watch this like at least once a year and it makes me so happy that I can go in the garage and drive mine!

You can set a code when you switch it off so that when it's next started you need to input the code before firing up the engine. That is so Bond 😃

I have a fully loaded 1998 e39 540i. Its original owner was a famous comedian and I'm only the second owner. Its the best car ever, had it for 12 years now and still haven't seen anything i'd replace it with. And this vid makes me wanna go out for a drive.............so see ya later!

Own a 1999 M sport auto 528i. 198000. Drives and looks like new. Everything works and stunning looking car. Best car I have ever owned, and I bought it in 2015. I love walking back to it when parked just so I get a good look. Never realised how all these buttons worked. Just amazing.
Some features I didn't know about yet. Loving it more and more day by day

Thankfully the cup holders are an afterthought. The car is properly engineered.I have driven for 35 years,done nearly a million miles mainly in BMW'S but not ever had the urge to have a coffee in a car.Maybe the odd water,which there are door pockets for.

My first car was an E39 530d. 3l diesel 190 something ps and a 143mph top speed. Great machine, many a drift done in this machine

I just got 1, although I've been wanting the Z4 for the longest time. In the end I'm so in love with my e39, that I'm no longer interested in the z4. I've never been in love with a car this much. I'm going to enjoy it for many years to come!

5 series, even in low spec and in modest power spec is all the car that you need.
I remember my 97 528i coming with this video.

2003 525i 232,300 miles and runs like a champ

Hi all and thanks for posting this video,I own a 2003 last edition of the E39 My car is a 525d se (ES) in Clear water blue with matching grey leather interior, I did use it as a daily driver up until 2 years ago then decided to get another daily run around and use my E39 for summer use only
And take it to a few classic car shows it's an M sport spec with rare 5 speed manual and silver trim inside not wood,pretty rare.
My advise is buy one now and drive a real car.
