Let's get something straight. Self Checkout has NEVER been intended to make checkout easier or faster for the customers. It's ONLY purpose is remove employees from the payroll.
Not really. Most of the places I’ve been to that have self checkout, simply repurposed these workers, and even hired more. You see, the real labor needed is fulfillment. Instead of standing all day scanning items, employees actually get to walk around, pulling items off shelves that people ordered for pick up. Where I live, most big box stores that have added self checkout in the last few years are STILL hiring. There is work to be had. People who pick a human cashier simply on the grounds that they believe they are providing someone a job, tend to also be the same people who refuse to put products back, refold, or hang up merchandise because they believe the very same, they’re providing work for someone who needs it, when the reality is that they already had a billion other things they needed to be doing rather than picking up after sloppy people.
@@c5cpe as a former cashier who worked at those 10 items or less registers, dealing with people in general was a constant fear, so most of us kept our mouths shut just to avoid dealing with “Karens.” But I will never forget the time when someone was upset that I didn’t say anything to the customer with 11 items in the 10 or less aisle. She was so upset that not only did the customer not enforce the rule, but that I didn’t either. Sure, she might’ve had 3 different forms of payment, or it was for three different people, but the fact remains, she was complaining about someone having 11, when she had almost 30, but it was somehow ok for her, since each transaction was under 10. Of course, how do you talk to someone like that? With what little the company paid me, was it worth getting into an argument over? So I continued to keep quiet. I am glad those lanes were replaced with self checkout. My local Target has gotten self checkout this year. Even my Walmart has a little more self checkouts. When I used them that I take my time in self checking.
The biggest complaint these stores get is you having to wait for deodorant to be unlocked. They are closing their self-checkout, but are increasing the size of their online pickup. The Target on Mission made the entire bottom level online pickup. They are getting rid of self checkout to make shopping in the store more inconvenient, so you will just order online and pickup in store. That way you won’t complain about getting your deodorant.
Actually, switching to all online pickup is a great idea. It could lower overhead costs, reduce space which reduces rent, reduce theft, and reduce labor hours.
Soon the employees will be the ones doing all the shopping and the customers will just come and pick up their orders at the gate. It will at least add more jobs I guess. In Walmart over here they already doing this, they still had regular shoppers but they also had their employees shopping in the store for drivers to come pick up the order and deliver to the customer or the customer could choose to come pick-up the order themselves.
@@VOAN eventually you can replace employees with a robot arm that just grabs stuff from the shelves. You don't need as many janitors since you won't have messy people in the store.

Shoplifting has become a major problem in London (England UK) and probably other cities and places, but it is London that gets most of the publicity about this issue. There are many complaints that the police don't turn up, but it would take the recruitment of many hundreds of thousands of police officers for London alone, to guard and monitor all the shops in the capital city. According to media reports this week, there are many Albanian (Eastern Europe) gangs that are sending people over to the UK, specifically to shoplift, including children. It is a difficult problem to solve, but very stressful for shop staff, who are also attacked. There is one major supermarket, the Co-Op, who reported recently that three members of staff have become HIV positive, because they were injected by shoplifters. There are also numerous physical and mental attacks. It's a really bad situation, and getting worse and worse every month. My local supermarket tells me that there is extensive shoplifting every day. Apparently, quite a lot is sold on EBay and the Internet. At the end of the day, it is the honest and decent shopper that pays for higher prices, as a result of shoplifting.
Everyone who buys a used item online or at a price too good to be true is also guilty of shoplifting in my opinion. If there were no way to liquidate stolen goods there would be far less shoplifting. Years ago all merchandise was behind the counter and you had to wait for a clerk to fill your order. We might need to do that again

This will not stop theft. Throwing a thief in jail will stop theft.
And cost everyone more than the item they stole. Store have insurance for los prevention.
@@thegazetteyt...who is paying for the "insurance"? the cost is passed down to consumers.
omg... nowadays, stealing is approved. Democrat politicians tell folks it is ok to steal. Something is up with these Democrats. They turn this country up-side-down.
@@stephenc2481 Cost for businesses is always passed down to customers. That's nothing new. And it's not "insurance". These companies have loss prevention built policies into their infrastructure, so they don't lose anything. They just want double the money.
There's absolutely no point of having more guards. They can do nothing to stop the shoplifters. They can say something, but they are not allowed to intervene physically in any way to prevent or stop thieves from stealing
Back when I worked at Kroger, our security (off duty cops) would chase and tackle shoplifters. It was kind of funny to watch. 😎
Yup those guards aren't going to blow a slightly above minimum wage gig getting into a confrontation with someone stealing. Even if they do apprehend someone, the negative backlash from the activists would force the security company to fire the guard to take the heat off them. This happens a lot, companies are weak and bow to pressure of radical activists and chuck the low wage schmuck overboard. This is why that guard didn't want to do anything when that old man complained, he wanted to keep his cushy job chatting with the other guard while playing security theatre.
Petty theft 90 days in jail. There I solved the problem.
Novel idea: you cannot even enter the store unless you have an account set up and scan a code identifying you.

A few idiots ruin it for all of us.
It was and still is a lot of idiots.
I am surprised that there are any stores left in San Francisco, I hate the self checkout glad to see them go.
They should never have S.C.O. At any stores.❤
Don’t they have cashiers? What do they? I see them just stand around doing nothing.
My local Target has gotten self checkout this year. Even my Walmart has a little more self checkouts. When I used them that I take my time in self checking.
It bugs me to see people with a full shopping cart ( maybe 50 items ) go through self-checkout.
THEN HIRE MORE PEOPLE TIO MAN ALL THE EMPTY CHECKSTANDS!!!
😂 skip going to the store altogether and only online delivery
Soon the employees will be the ones doing all the shopping and the customers will just come and pick up their orders at the gate. It will at least add more jobs I guess. In Walmart over here they already doing this, they still had regular shoppers but they also had their employees shopping in the store for drivers to come pick up the order and deliver to the customer or the customer could choose to come pick-up the order themselves.
That way you have to pay for your items.
@@VOAN eventually you can replace employees with a robot arm that just grabs stuff from the shelves. You don't need as many janitors since you won't have messy people in the store.
the receipt thing is clever because they cannot wheel a shopping cart of goods through that and it is hard to jump that.
I remember when they first installed the high tech gate, I said let's see how that work out. Now they remove the self-checkout, and again I say let's see how that work out. Closing up shops in SF and Oakland is the only solution. Most robbers don't even bother to pretend they are paying at the self-checkout.
Get rid of all self checkouts ! I hate scanning my stuff after a long day of work
Funny how these retailers installed self-checkout to save money on labor... lol
The honor system only works where theres honor.
All this can be avoided by simply making it a membership to shop. You have a membership card you can go in an shop. No membership then tough luck Sherlock. An if you shop with a membership you have to swipe to pass an that swipe let's it know who u are in the event you attempt to steal. That way they have your info an everything on file. It's time to really get a hold of this thief problem.
LOL yeah right like people are going to bother with that, not when you can order anything on line with a couple of mouse clicks and free shipping to your door
@@HobbyOrganist only to keep theft at bay. That's the deterrent. For the people who just stop it'll give a better experience because who wants to witness someone come in an walk out with half the store.

Very sad, sick of tired people stealing.
I guess they figured it's just best to pay people with their Worth to do jobs that humans should be doing in the first place
Who wants to be a checker? The crime caused this. Not some idea of "giving someone a job no one wants."
cashier jobs can be replaced by robots. but not as much security and police and legal stuff. cashier less allows for faster check out

@yalelaw- The world is going fowards. Read a book, snowflake.
That's a shame. I always use self checkout when it's available. The Target store by me has 12 of them. I don't want the regular checkout employees handling my items anyway, not after interacting with all those other people. No way. Love self checkout options.
Preach it brother. Reminds me of losing my virginity...in, out, done.
I'm glad 😊 I hate using self checkout feels like I'm an employee not a Customer.
The key word is "options." Too many places force you to do self checkout whether you want it or not. Btw, how many people do you think handled your items even before they were put on the shelf for you to buy?
Only for few items I prefer self checkout if not I prefer cashiers im not saving the company money without not cheaper grocery, at least self service gas stations are cheaper than the non self-service in my country, although here we don’t have the massive adoption of self checkout cashiers that the USA apparently has
This is why we can’t have nice things. Beginning to feel like a 3rd world country because of certain types of people.

0:36 This woman brazenly bullshitting😒. No, self checkout wasn’t made for shopper convenience or to save time, it was done so multi million dollar companies don’t have to pay people to do it. Drives me nuts that they even made a self checkout at the local gas station, and the employees there get mad when you ask them to check you out instead. How about replacing regular manned checkouts as the standard, should have never done away with them in the first place.

If security can’t stop the thieves can we turn a blind eye on the citizens who step in?

This is how people get hurt/ killed sticking their nose in business that has nothing to do with them. The companies will NOT support them if something seriosuly happens to them, plus the companies are insured, so why would anyone risk putting themselves in danger???
@@choosey87 insurance doesn’t matter, when the store takes losses every day the store closes and the community suffers, people fight and get shot everyday the last thing I’m worried about is a shop lifter mad at me😂😂😂 sorry dude everyone grows up different.

Everyones answer to anything. "I get it" When do we actually make society better at some point instead of just getting it... You don't get anything, but freedom slowly stripped away. Many nations do not have it as good as we do. Wild times indeed.

Isn’t that dangerous ( if there’s a fire or shootings 😱)? with so many gates & locked doors... when people needs to run for their life ??😮
Now, these idiots are just figuring it out. People are going to steal if they see a small number of employees that might stop them. If you live in an area that have Menards and compare them to these other box stores .
Unbelievable, shoplifters pull back the technology and community.
I'm not sure what the end goal even is, when nobody has a job and everything is automated.. Then What??🤔
so they have a situation where their security guards do not engage shoplifters, and they think shoplifters won't just walk right past a cashier?

It irritates me when ppl complain about crime and vote overwhelmingly for politicians who are lenient on it.

So how's that $950 limit working out for you? I can't believe how anyone other than a criminal would vote the same politicians back in office.
So this is what it takes to get rid of self checkout!! 🤘😂😂
Self checkout was not about convenience for the customer it was always about increasing store profits by using you as free labor. Good riddance 😁
The uk is a mini usa I’m saying it doesn’t happen in other countries but I think the rate is a lot lower although because of demographic changes happening we never know, guess people want to go live like in the 70-90s where high criminally was a daily acurency, in my country fight would broke out between different villages they were menaces, high drug use in open sight, stabbing ect

Self checkouts replace an actual person's job.
Thieves should be jailed.
"Replacing" a job is how we became prosperous, it's called productivity and makes all other jobs more valuable.
The problem here is legalizing theft, nothing more or less, entirely predictable.

It's a symptom of terrible politics. I'm moving to where I can shop without all of these barriers. SF has become a zoo for humans.
I hate self checkouts anyway. I get customers who basically expect me to scan and do everything for them like a regular checking lane. When I have five other regusters to watch. The self checkouts constantly block customers after every few items are scanned. And requires me to come over and scan it. I get customers who all wang the digital coupon and a price change. Its also really hard to watch six registers. Very easy for shoplifters to slip by.
