- Last Thursday, we learned that the only Safeway grocery store in the Western Addition of San Francisco will close.
Community members and those with the NAACP are speaking out, saying if this plan goes through, this will negatively impact the city's Black community with longterm implications.

Two reasons why this place is closing. Shoplifting and employee safety. I worked at this store back in 2005 and had store items thrown at me. I quit around 2007.

It's not helping the law abiding people in the neighborhood, but Safeway can't keep supporting the theft of goods by thieves.
It's not Safeway's fault. It's a fact that the shoplifting is out of control and the law isn't doing anything to help. Same thing is happening all over the Bay area. Stealing eventually has a rippling effect on everyone.
The fake shoplifting was the plan all along. I was an excuse for this situation to happen. Who wants to live in an apartment and pay 2500+ for a 1 bedroom apartment?

Years ago I was a grocery manager. In Philadelphia PA in north Philly to be exact. And when I tell you the theft of merchandise is unreal please believe me. They steal anything that's not nailed down many stores close due high theft both internal and external. It's really a shame when the stores close because they can't absorb the loss any longer they blame the mayor city council the company that took thousands maybe millions in losses.

Grocery stores operate on extremely tight profit margins. The biggest problem here is what is politely referred to as "pilferage". The fact that No One in this story has a word to say about doing something about that is a big part of why this management decision was inevitable.

Tons of retail businesses are being forced to close their doors due to unchecked theft. But if these people have to travel a mile away, that's an outrage? No one mentioned the workers who will have to find work elsewhere. SF is 7 miles by 7miles with public transport. There are rural communities that actually have to commute an hour away to grocery shop and seek medical attention. Until the shoplifting is dealt with at home, this will sadly become the norm.
Maybe if some people would start raising their kids right teaching them not to be thugs and criminals and harass their community ,stores like this would stay open

I did notice all products were locked up. Not at my local stores, I can walk in and BUY whatever I need to buy, by myself, like a law abiding adult. Did this neighborhood fail to teach their community not to steal. I taught my child not to steal from stores and now he WORKS there, I am very proud of him!
You can’t force a private entity to continue running a money-losing business in your neighborhood. If you want to keep business from moving out, much less attract new businesses, you need to clean up your own neighborhood.

I used to shop at this Safeway. The last straw for me was when I went to get some lunch meat and a shoplifter took it all and said if I wanted some I could buy it outside for less. Community members should be pointing their fingers at rampant crime and homelessness in the city, not the mayor.
