The fact that for 300 hundred years it sat unfinished is insane, can you imagine the people of that time wondering if it ever will be completed, how fortunate we are
What the video does not depict is that the cathedral was severely damaged during Word War II, with only a reinforcement of ordinary bricks preventing a partial collapse. This damage was not repaired until the 1990s.
Another belter, for which I thank you, James. Your upload certainly made me think of *Life* - in many ways. I do hope that Cologne Cathedral does not go the way of Notre-Dame Cathedral. With thanks and respect, I remain, Rab 🎲 🌠 ✝
00:44 The darkest times our wonderful city ever experienced. Fortunately descendants of "allies" visiting as tourists having a Kölsch beer and spending a nice time nowadays.
Yes, they already had the crane in the 15th century and during the break of work for around 300 years the crane became a negative icon for the city of cologne. When they continued the work around 1840 the crane was still there! :D
The fact that it was on hold for so long and then people decided to one day finally finish it just amazes me
That medieval crane managed to survive from 1499 -1865
Always find your “through time” videos fascinating. So glad this masterpiece made it through World War II.
I would like to cover some Dresden Landmarks soon. I imagine there will be some very dramatic changes exploring cities torn apart by WW2

Not the best example of "German efficiency"...
...and a fine example of neo gothic architecture. Well, Cologne is not even typical for german efficiency anyway.
