  • Oh LaWd. The internet scares me sometimes. With cancel culture being so prevalent online, it really makes you think twice about posting your art sometimes. What if someone thinks I'm stealing? What if my style looks a lot like someone else's? What is art theft and should I be scared right now??

This is stuff that still keeps me awake. The fear of making something, and people going: "Hey, that's like..." , only to find out it was something similar I saw before, but completely forgot about.
I don't think there is a clear line between what is what, but here is my take on it:
There are people who take art they think is obscure enough, and 1:1 present it as their own with their signature. Obviously Theft.
Than there are people who 1:1 trace or copy a specific piece of the art. Still theft I'd say.
So far the "artist" had no original input, all the creative work was done by someone else.
Beyond this point things get blurry for me.
Some things can be quite iconic to certain art. But I think it all depends on context and where you will take it, the amount of creative input and continuing to make it your own. This will eventually set your art apart from others. It's a process of growth, but at some point an artist needs to grow past his training-wheels.
But be aware, the internet is full of people who don't care about context. They will call foul on everything that smells a bit like that other thing they saw first. It's depressing, but you have to deal with it somehow or it will hold you back.

      I completely agree!
I think the fear of being accused of theft, or copying can prevent a lot of artists from sharing their work online, especially if their drawing isn't copied at all. For many, imitating an art style is how they began to draw, myself included. Of course many have since learned to use their own imagination to create their own styles and works. I think where a person is in their art journey can determine whether they should (and I'm using that term lightly) trace or not. Everyone has to start somewhere, and for some people that somewhere is tracing or imitating. I do think that if anyone does this that they should ask the artist for permission if possible, or credit them.

First off, I love the final product you got😍 Secondly, I don't think it's possible to steal lighting, even if you (or anyone) directly color picked from someone else's art, you were inspired to create using those colors and no one can claim using those colors as there original idea/concept/style.

Aww! Thanks! Also, what you said about color and lighting kinda reminds me about how you can't claim to own chords in music. Chords don't belong to anyone.

I feel like copying other artists is totally normal literally every single artist in the world have copied someone’s art at some point. It’s impossible to find how, for example, you want your line quality to be if you never looked at someone else’s line work and thing to yourself “I like this thing about the lines they draw” and try to incorporate it in your work. Your not stealing the artist identity or style, your simply exploring what you want yours to be and it’s only helping you grow as an artist. Of course I’m not saying, go ahead and copy EVERYTHING they draw, but simply take some different elements from different artists. When I saw your illustration, I saw some inspiration from the other artist, but I could still differentiate your style and her’s. Idk it’s just my opinion but I feel like you did a great job at taking certain aspects from her work that you liked and added it to elevate even more your style but not at the point I couldn’t tell it was your style.None the less, I liked your drawing and you shouldn’t be insecure about posting it.

You've got a point there. When I first started drawing a lot I traced over coloring sheets, and changed different parts of the drawings to make different characters. Thanks to that, I was able to get some early experience in character design. Sometimes some aspect of another artists work will show up in my own without me even realizing it, kind of like what happened with this one. Thanks btw! ☺️🤠

Howdy! I really want to hear your thoughts on art theft, so feel free to comment your thoughts on art theft, tracing, copying, and all that jazz. °^°

Using reference photos is ok. But if my final comes out looking close to the reference, I will credit the original when I post it.

if you look at a drawing and then get inspired to draw something. it is not art theft it is just referencing. and referencing is 100% okay in my opinion.

What if the two drawings look very similar?

@@ArtistikFreedom it is fine, no one owns a style or a color palette. if you think that it is important to mention that you reference an artist work you can say that this art was inspired by (artiest name) but I think as long as you do not take the art itself (no change just copied) and clam it as your own then it is not art theft even if it is similar.

    Regarding tracing and copying.
Tracing: Claiming that a %100 traced artwork as your own is wrong, however, if you traced a pose, clothing, acessaries, etc I don't think you have to credit them. Of course if you want you can credit the artist/photographer you took inspiration from, but it's not necessary.
Copying: If you were to copy the way someone draws eyes (for example) I think that's fine, especially if you don't plan on posting that work. I think it's appropriate to credit the artist you copied tho.

What if someone traces directly over an outfit or pose? Line for line?
I definitely agree with you on the whole "not posting" bit. I've never posted any of the drawings that I traced. The only time I've ever shown one was in a video about redrawing a really old picture from when I was little. And crediting the original artist is always good.

@@ArtistikFreedom Tracing shouldn't be a long term goal for final artworks, and tracing portions of another artists work should be avoided as often as possible. If there's something you like about how an artist drew a skirt, or arm position, pose, etc try to find similar things online first. For example with a skirt find references of the same/similar material, angle, amount of ruffles, etc, from there make a collage of what you like/want and work from there. For those who have trouble making things from scratch, taking the pics you collected and editing and overlapping them in software will help a ton.

    • @ArtistikFreedom

That's really good advice! I've seen professional artists group a bunch of references to draw a final original piece. *remembers that I need to use references more often*
