Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love author) once posted a list pointing out the cost of fast food and eating out. She said something like, “You’re not too poor to travel, you’re just too lazy to cook.” It was eye opening!

4:04 One additional tip, for those who do grocery pickup: if you have two grocery stores that are reasonably close to each other, price shop them and stagger the pickup times. What I mean is, have a tab open for each grocery store, and search for your grocery list items. Whichever place has it for cheaper, add it to your cart. Then pick up both orders, one right after the other. It takes hardly any extra time, and depending on which stores you're using, you can save a bundle this way.
Alternatively, you may find that one store consistently beats the others when it comes to the specific foods your family buys. That is also useful information, and will save you money, because when you're pressed for time and can only visit one store to buy a few necessities, you'll know to go to that one instead of their competitors.

We decorate lightly for Christmas. One quilted wall hanging with a quilted Christmas tree on it. One Santa Claus gnome. One red Christmas stocking & a few pretty Christmas cards we have received in the past. That’s it. This is stuff that has been gifted to us. We didn’t pay for any of it. We don’t decorate for any other holiday. We don’t have any subscriptions to anything. We watch free content on TH-cam, Peacock, Vudu, etc. We reverse meal plan. We buy what’s on sale that’s not convenience food & meal plan around that. We’ve found a lot of great sales that aren’t advertised. We follow many of your suggestions on grocery shopping & eat for $75 per month per person or less. And yes we have occasionally bought a $5 or less frozen pizza if we know we’re going to have a very busy day in the upcoming week. We don’t normally keep those around because they’re too easy to reach for. We have done no spend months-usually in February. We got out to eat about 2x a month with extended family & friends. We order water & split an entree or an appetizer depending on how hungry we are. So we get out of the restaurant for about $15 or less. So even though we’d prefer not spending this money as often, these are people we want to see a couple of times a month & with busy work & life schedules this is our opportunity to see them.

Sorry, one more observation. My husband and I are retiring in two years. In preparation, we’ve stopped going out to eat (honestly-it’s motivated on several points: not spending a crazy amount of money for what used to be affordable, the insane tipping added to it, and the poor health benefits from eating processed foods). We’ve gone from eating out EVERY Friday (ditch the “I deserve it” mentality & swap that for “I deserve a great retirement”) to going out once every other month or so. Huge savings on our wallets and our health.

Where we live pop is actually cheaper than bottled water for the same size. We don't buy pop but that blew my mind. Buying a package of oreos are cheaper than making cookies from scratch (the prices of baking items have went through the roof). Buying bulk now costs about the same as the smaller packages. We still do almost all our cooking from scratch, but "real" food seems to be going up exponentially.

HHmmm, what about when your meal plan items are all marked up for Holiday shoppers or what not? I went shopping with a meal plan to make hamburgers and beef stew, but the ground meat price was dollars /pound extra and they were out of the carne picada I needed for the stew. However there were 4 packets of Lamb marked down cheaper than chicken and 4 packages of lean ground turkey with discount stickers. So instead of burgers and stew, I'll be making Shepherds Pie, maybe Turkey dumplings and Turkey Jerkey. The good thing is I can freeze them till I'm ready.
I DID spend the month of May, where I made all my meals from my freezer , fridge and pantry. The only thing I bought was a bell pepper, and carrots at the start of the month that i needed to make homemade saurkraut. It was nice to not go to the supermarket.

I am 59, gray hair and I wear it long (up most of the time), so I'm not spending any money coloring it or getting haircuts. I cut my husband's hair, have for 41 years, and I used to cut our son's hair and our 3 daughters till they moved out.
One day after I cut my husband's hair recently he said 'just think of all the money we saved by me not going elsewhere and you cutting our family's hair'. I started doing it because of time constraints way back when and he just stuck with it because it was so convenient for him. My initial investment was a pair of hair scissors, an inexpensive plastic cover for him to wear and a razor kit and a book I found for $1 at the library. I spent less than $50, 41 years ago!
Maybe you don't want to cut hair, but maybe learn one skill this year that can save money.

#1 I don't watch TikTok or have Snapchat.
#2 We only Netflix and Prime. My big splurge is my Kindle Unlimited and my New York Times subscription s. But when my kids were little, we watched didn't have cable, we watched videos and read books that we got from the library.
#3 I already do those grocery "hacks". I never drink
    soda. I bake bread.
#4 no spend month, my husband and I were talking about this one.
I sew and my goal is to use up the fabric I have already bought. He rarely buys anything.
We do the put stuff into our cart online to decide later, which often means the store emails us a coupon to encourage our purchase. Sometimes, I decide that I don't need the item afterall. The key is knowing the difference between need and want. I want that 520 colored pencil set but I don't need it.
#5 we might eat out once every couple of months but we used to go out weekly. Frozen pizza takes 15 minutes and is faster than delivery.

I gave up my bank card like 3 months ago. My husband who is naturally frugal has his card and we pay some bills with free bank checks.
Weve saved so much on that alone.
But this year im implementing the no spends and no eating out.
We went out to breakfast just us 2 no kiddos. FIFTY DOLLARS
On what?!?! We thought we were splurging on orange juice. The whole thing was a splurge

I can totally do a week no spend Money!!.,But my husband can not ..he always want to go out to eat..we can tons of food..
Like today … thanksgiving eve we stayed home and made dressing. I made plenty for us for tomorrow and I freeze 10 bags throughout the year. Have you been doing this for years? He has been in a grumpy mood because we haven’t been out… family has come to visit but it’s still I don’t know he doesn’t understand that we need to save money

I use no spend days very effectively. I also delay major purchases to see if I really want to make them happen. Quite often I delay and then decide I really do not need the item.

Agree 100% with the rotating subscriptions. I'm always amazed at friends who have multiple ones at the same time--who has that much time??? I limit ours and for 2024, we can have no more than 2 at any given time. We do get Netflix for free through our cell phone plan too, so why would we need more than one or two beyond that. There is so much free stuff available to watch. Meal planning is one of the best things I ever did, we waste next to nothing now, we eat healthier and it takes the stress of "what should we eat" or not having anything thawed away.

we only went out to eat, when i was young, for special occasions like birthdays. it was even like that with ordering a pizza. i'm now 40 years old and still live that way. i can easily take a plain bagel and put some pasta sauce on it that i know i always have with some cheese and i have a perfect mini pizza. i've even done fancy things with the bagels like using pesto as the sauce and freshly grated parm cheese instead of mozz. and if anyone has kids, the little ones LOVE putting their own pizza bagels together! it creates family time without breaking the bank. i haven't had soda in years but i'll admit that i still buy things like trail mix or my fav skinny pop popcorn. it's my vice but i go to dollar tree for them.
