My comment has nothing to do with your topic other than I enjoyed this. It's when you talk about your mom and your day together. Grief sucks and shows up unexpectedly. Well it reared its head listening to you talk about you and mom shopping and the food court. Oh how miss those days. My mom and I did same but would hit a Saunders and share a chocolate cream puff. Freedom to spend time with elderly parents is priceless. My mom is in last stage of alzheimers and hasn't known me in 6+ years. So though your discussion caused me tears, it also brought me good memories. Thank you.
Christine - I’ve been following your videos for almost a year now and wanted to say thank you for all your tips and tricks! We had an unexpected job loss this year and had to figure out how to survive on one salary and support our 3 small children. Thanks to you, we’re able to stay afloat! It’s so hard to figure out how to cut corners and save money, but I found your grocery hacks super helpful! Almost 8$ a Gallon in Germany...😢 also electricity is about 5times what Americans pay. That's probably why we invented Aldi in the first place😂😅

Yup. Same here. I even bought my own clothes after I got my first job at 14 in a nursing home.
I make my son pay his own car insurance too. He does have a job that he enjoys. He picks up more hours in the summer.
The freedom point is so true. We bought a large, beautiful house, and it is SO expensive between property taxes, insurance, and tons of maintenance. If I could go back I would've gotten a house half the size.
While you can’t go back in time you can make a different decision. Use the equity in your house to buy a new one and then use the difference in the amount your saving to invest in either the stock market or real estate property.
We live in a small rural town in northern Idaho. We don’t let our car’s gas tank get below 1/2 tank. Emergencies always happen when the tank is empty! Once a month we go to the bigger town (Lewiston) for dr appts and our winco run. We break the big packs of meat into enough for 2. Then use a food saver to freeze the rest. Our freezer is always full and our daughter has shopped out of it from time to time when she needed to. What a great feeling to be able to let her have access to it for her family.
Lived in that area (Orofino) for over 2 years and did the same. You have to stay prepared because you never know when the highway would be closed down or whatever.
Same. I drive once a month to Great Falls, Mt for groceries and appointments. I help feed my single neighbor and manage make up freezer meals for him 2 times a week. I don’t mind
Yes, my husband doesn't let the car go to less than half tank. You will lose some to evaporation with an emptier tank, apparently.
However, you are paying to carry the weight of the fuel in your tank.
Can not agree more! We lived below our means for years. I’m 55, been retired for years, no mortgage, car payments, credit debt. Hubs is still working because he enjoys it. Sent our kids to college with no loans. The year we paid off our mortgage (it took 12 yrs) was a total life changer for us. Once we did that, everything else got paid for and allowed us true financial FREEDOM! To all the younger people or others that advise them - you’re never too young or there’s never too little to put into some sort of 401k, retirement, savings or investment account. I started putting away $25/month at 20 (and that hurt!) gradually adding more as I got older. Wow! What that looks like now is something I could not have imagined back then!
Cost of daycare though is like another mortgage.
The saddest thing that happened to me in 2023, aside from my twin daughters graudating college and moving states away 😭😭 is I bought a maple cinnabon at the airport coming home from visiting them at Christmas, and I somehow LEFT IT BEHIND without having had a single bite of that $8 heaven-in-box!! 😩😭😭I live in south FL, got gas today, 86-proof, $3.69/gal. 😥 Our Walmart had 60-ct eggs at $13.87 last week. Clearly, it's cheaper to live in Idaho, but then again, I hear you guys got like 30-inches of snow this week - the end of March! 😮😨
We always provided an old car for our kids to drive until they were 19. They had to pay the car insurance and gas on the car they drove from the time they got their license. So they got summer jobs to do that at 15.
My dad can hardcore relate to braces, driver’s training, and car insurance for teenagers. I’m a twin, so everything my dad did was doubled every single time.

While growing up in the 80s, our parents didn't give us an allowance, pay for a car for us, pay for insurance, etc. If you wanted something, you worked at a job. Plain and simple. We lived 4 miles out of town and rode our bike to work and back. I started working at age 15 (babysat before that). My brother started at age 12. My older sister started at 15, I think. We all road bike. Worked 6 days a week during summer. Saved our money to buy a cheap old car and paid for our own insurance and all upkeep. We were in sports only in Jr high...cross country, track, volleyball, football. My mom was a stay at home mom as I also had 3 younger siblings (6 total of us). During school, I did get to drive my mom's car to school and work when she didn't need to use it (only on days I worked) otherwise I rode the bus, until I bought my car. We also bought most of our clothes too. We worked every single weekend also throughout school (except when I got strep throat and 1 family vacation camping). We grew up totally appreciating everything we had as we didn't grow up with a lot, learned to be frugal, do without, etc. It made us tough kids who had awesome work habits. Plus, we also grew up on a dairy farm where everything done by hand (except milking was done by a machine). Man, I miss the great muscles I had and how skinny I was!!! 😅
Christine, I had a poodle for 15 years. Sadly, she is no longer here on earth. I cut her hair myself, and you don't need to cut their hair every month. Save yourself some money. 😊
You got me to thinking here. I have always thought of myself as being frugal but I have not worked out a budget for many years. Since you brought it up I thought it would be fun to just calculate what I actually spend. On last years utility bills I paid $40.26 per week. My water costs me about $4.50 per week as I have a cavitette and no municipal sewage. Home insurance and property tax $101.50 per week. My internet, cable and phone costs me $37.60 per week. No kids at home. I have a 2017 SUV paid off and car insurance runs $25 per week. Two indoor cats with no vet bills in 8 years but I feed premium canned food plus litter at $18.50 per week. I have no health issues with one wellness visit a year which costs me $0 and one prescription at $2.30 per week. Prime and Netflix $5.75 per week. One subscription to Handyman magazine for myself and gift subscriptions for two grown sons $0.58 per week for the 3 of us. ($30 for the year, $10 each). Gas $15 per week which includes vacation trips by car. Food $35 per week and I don't eat out. I do love to travel and take about 5 weeks every year. I go with family and friends when I can and spend about $7000 - $8000 per year which covers the condo cost for everyone and my travel costs. Last year it was 2 weeks in SC, 1 week in GA with family, 1.5 weeks in WI with a friend, 2 weeks in HI with a friend, and 1 week in IL with family. In GA there were 17 of us that went.
All together that is about $1240 per month not counting travel. I get $2100 from Social Security per month so that leaves $860. Actually in 2016, after retirement, I did take out a 15 year mortgage to completely renovate the entire lower level with a new bedroom, walk in closet, laundry, spa like bathroom, and family room. Also put in were new windows and a new upstairs bath. I took advantage of the low interest rate which is 2.75% and costs me $800 per month. Leaving the money in the IRA with even CD interest earned at over 5% has allowed me to do the traveling and have money for unusual expenses. Also that investment in the home has raised its sale value considerably.
That’s awesome! What an inspiration as I’m 5 years to retirement. House paid, car paid, no major health issues. I camp and kayak. I just got my passport so travel will definitely be on the bucket list. I’m getting more frugal by the year, lol. Things to do, people to see! 😁
Hair color, birthday presents, health insurance, co-pays, petfood and vet bills, oil and filters for oil changes, home repair supplies and yard maintenance (even if you do your own you need gas, grass seeds and fertilizer, upkeep on the mower), clothing because even Goodwill isn't free, viral protection for computers????

I would agree, hair color is not necessary and some people don’t mind if their lawns aren’t perfect. Sure, gas for the mower. But no seeds and we don’t fertilize because we don’t want the toxins around us 🤷🏻♀️ the kids have fun picking the dandelions 😂
Pretty sure we've never spent a dime on viral protection for the computers. And we treat yearly vet visits the same as yearly baby "well visits", which is NOPE. Nothing but money grabs. Vets and Peds gotta pay their Mercedes payments. 👎👎
I have my own little personal escrow account for those irregular expenses - I guestimate as best I can what I will need in total for vet bills, maintenance, insurance, etc. for the full year, then divide by 12. Each monthly paycheck I deposit into my escrow so it's there when needed.
Pet food goes in my grocery budget - they're family! :)
For all us SW Idaho who get sad whenever she mentions going to Sam's Club ... I was talking to a girl on the customer service line, and blah blah blah ... She says "I see a location right there in Nampa', which I told her shows closed on searches. Then we talked about it and she researched it a bit, she found out that it closed 10 years ago. She took my request to re-evaluate the population here and in surrounding areas and said that the more people that send in contacts to them, the more they can review a need to re-open based on all the new criteria. As a frugal Mom. while working full time, I drop my teenage son off for his part time job at 6am. While I drive across town for my 8hr shift. Then we go pickup my daughter working her part time job(while attending school) at 11pm. Then repeat!. So.......

What about medical insurance and expenses, life insurance, clothing, home/car maintenance and repairs, birthday/holiday/special event gifts or expenses, and charitable donations?
I also thought of insurances. She is sponsored by a life insurance company, so maybe she gets it free from them? But medical insurance, even if it’s through Dave’s job, couldn’t cover 100% of expenses, so to me it only makes sense to save money each month in a sinking fund for emergencies.
@Hannah_MK I've never heard of an employer pay 100% of medical insurance premiums.
I’m guessing Christine and Dave make a lot more than 36k a year so their savings account is probably substantial. If you were only making $36k, you’d definitely have to cut some of the activities or other non-essentials which even Christine said they would if they had to. A smaller travel budget? I camp so that’s how I cut travel, and kayaking is my favorite way to pass the time camping other than laying on a hammock with a book from the library, lol. It could be done. The list isn’t all inclusive, you just have to start with necessities and go from there.

And, through sponsorships, they recieve a ton of free stuff - everything from groceries and meal kits to life insurance and mattresses. The part that's the most concerning is how misleading these numbers are. I understand that this is purely for entertainment purposes, not a realistic financial representation of weekly expenses, but the presentation makes it seem like 36k after tax is a reasonable budget for a family of 6. That would land just above the federal poverty line, and I don't know any family of 6, no matter how frugal, that could survive on 36k in today's world.

I know that this is just a video for entertainment purposes, and the presentation is designed to fit Christine's narrative, but it paints a picture that is completely unattainable for most families. 36k after taxes for a family of 6, would put them just slightly above the federal poverty line, and I don't know any family, no matter how frugal, who could live well on that.
Memories. We used to have a nice mall in town, built in the 80s. We did have the typical mall stores like Orange Julius, Cinnabon, Hot Sam Pretzels, etc. Stores such as Boston Store, JC Penney, Sears, etc. Not to forget the bookstores, toy stores, candle stores, etc. All gone now. Many out of business. Today, they are tearing down the old mall building. An era from the past is gone. Makes my heart sad. All the female bonding shopping trips are just a memory. We don't bond over Amazon or online shopping trip with lunch.
Our car insurance is $372 for just the 2 of us! Eek. It’ll bump up to $622 if we add one teenager… and our grocery budget is $1300 per month..I cannot imagine only spending average $300 per month!
Hi Christine, I'm just catching up on your videos. You do such an amazing job on your budget. 737 per week is a wow for 5 people living the lifestyle you guys lead. I don't even think I can do that for 2 people. BTW, not to be that person, but I have to because I'm a stickler of math as much as you are of grammar: There are more than 4 weeks' worth of days per month. To get the correct grand total you would have to times 737 by 52 weeks in a year, then divided that by 12 months (737 times 52 then divided by 12). Your gross expenditures are 3193.34 per month, plus the bikes, shoes and whatever else you end up splurging on per month.

I live in Brisbane Australia and our fuel/gas is $2.00 per litre which would make it $7.57 AUD a gallon it has been as high as 2.30 litre AUD just recently, so you have it pretty good over there

Loved this video. I have one kid in college in Idaho, while I'm stuck in the grip of Newsome. I love it up there! I have to say, the costs of out of state tuition, rent and food has skyrocketed in last 2 yrs. We used to make monthly Costco runs, now it's like every 3 mos...$300-500 a trip (without any fun items like beach towels or new pool cups) no thank you.
We told our teenagers if they get a license and want to drive our cars they need to get a job to pay for them including their phones.
That’s how our household worked but parents didn’t tell us to pay for our own expenses, we automatically felt like it was right to buy what we need by starting to work. Parents covered the essentials like food and house, we paid for our own cars, phones and extras.
That’s what I was told when I was a teen as well. I borrowed $200 from my grandfather for my first car, a Chevy Impala, and paid him $25 a month + one month because he wanted to teach me about interest, lol. Of course, this was in the early 80s but the lesson stuck. 😂. My current vehicle is a 2002 and I will drive it until the wheels fall off but gotta admit, I’m dreaming of a hybrid. 🙏

I grew up in a frugal household and I have continued that lifestyle into adulthood. You are so right about frugality being about freedom! In the last few years I ended up with a chronic condition that has me bed-ridden. I am spending a lot more money on prepared food and delivery than I ever thought I would, but it has come with the trade off of selling my car due to not being able to drive any more. I sold it during the pandemic when used car prices were high and now I don't have car insurance or gas to pay for. Everything is a trade off and you will have different priorities at different times in your life.
I had a friend who worked at Cinnabon and brought me a box every few days. I had to tell her to please stop cause I couldn’t make myself not eat all of them. Yes, I miss them..
You mentioned cell phone and stream services. We frankly had just gotten sucked into the “normalization “ of high monthly payments. One day just sat down and examined those in detail. Had a small meltdown and went to work on them. Shopped every possible phone carrier. Looked at Satellite versus cable. Land line phone. Ultimately we reduced our phone from over $300 month to ….$120. At the same time cut cable and went to stream only but instead of a service bought Roku. $39 one time spend as we own that now. We did have to have a $15 add to get local channels though. In essence…my suggestion is to take the time to really look at things. Eat at home, cancel most if not all periodicals/magazines. Those, if absolutely necessary are cheaper to do online versions as well. Good luck to everyone.
That still sounds expensive, I live in Portugal and it's cheap compared to the USA. We don't have a landline, don't see the point, fibre WiFi as my husband needs high speed internet for work, we each have a cell phone and it's about 70 Euros per month in total.
We cut cable years ago and, after some trial and error (mostly error)with a previous internet provider, we now use TMobile Internet. My husband works from home and must have reliable internet service. Our bill went from over $150/month to less than $60/month. We will subscribe/cancel streaming services when a binge-worthy show is on (British Baking Show or TN Vol football!). We don't miss the regular network junk or commercials at all.

YES! When my son was stationed at Camp Pendleton (Marines), I discovered a Cinnebon just outside the security gate. That smell guided me down the hall right to itself! I can smell it now, & heading over to indulge right now... I'm drooling already!

Thank you for this breakdown. I feel like there are so many unaccounted costs such as pet costs of food, vet, medicines, healthcare, health and beauty purchases, general household supplies, home and auto maintenance, gifts, and the ever important life insurance if you have kids under 18. Also, I'm assuming $36,000 would be after taxes, social security, and medicare deductions. I realize some things could be eliminated if some unseen cost comes up, but in reality, your're probably going to keep kids activities.
That is super impressive that your kids’ activities cost is so low. Especially with gymnastics. Also…school costs? I feel like every time I turn around it’s $30 for this field trip or fundraiser or teacher’s appreciation…
Your car insurance is a dream! lol. My husband and I share car, 2019 Honda Civic. He had a little dui about 6 years ago in a different state and we pay over 400. Don't even ask about our car payment.lol.
We have no issues for our insurance and me and my husband pay 350 $ for 2 financed vehicles, ridiculous but we live in Florida and it’s high to live here .

Growing up, whenever one of my friends had sleepovers, her mom always brought Cinnabuns to the house for us to have for breakfast! I always looked forward to it (and it was also the only time I had them).
Fuel here in Europe is just under $7/gallon when one does the math to switch litres to gallons and euros to USD.
Wow! How much do you drive? I always hear people drive less in Europe. Our gas (Ohio, US) is about $3.30 a gallon right now. Everything I do is in a bigger town about 8 to 9 miles away. I have to run my kid to and from work (he really needs to get his license) nearly every day and thats about 33 miles a day. But there are a lot of days I have to run to that town for some other reason (church, where I volunteer, appointments, etc) so that's another 16 miles there and back. So I probably average about 50 miles a day and I don't even work. :(
I got to $9.10 per gallon doing the math conversion. I am in The Netherlands, gas is even more expensive here than in other parts of Europe.
@@tracietrim In The Netherlands we drive way less. It is a tiny country (fits in the state of Texas 16 times). Everything is really close by and we mostly use our bikes to get anywhere. Sometimes I don't use my car for weeks on end, lately it has been once or twice a week and mostly distances under 25 miles
Many people in the U.S. have no idea how much our gasoline is subsidized. I wish we had the walkability factor of much of Europe!

Gas is currently $2.98 per gallon in southern Missouri.
In Minneapolis gas was $3.349 a gallon for Premium at Costco. We pay $257 a month for car insurance for 3 adults.

We are a single income family of 4 and I do $75 a week (usually don’t spend it all) with a Costco haul every 6ish weeks. It’s so doable and it’s wild to me when people spend a mortgage payment on groceries in a month

The fuel prices did go up because a whole bunch of refineries are being hit in Russia by the ukrainians
I can beat you on seeing movies in the theater. My husband and I haven't gone out to see a movie since we saw Saving Private Ryan. There is simply nothing they've produced that is worth the money it costs to see it. Anything we want to see, we wait until it comes out on DVD.

I find it extremely interesting how different prices are in different locations. If you live in the US, how much one pays for car insurance can vary greatly depending on the state laws regarding "no fault", etc. Depending on which state, you may pay more for dairy because of a state's "dairy tax." Some locations have city and state income taxes in addition to federal income taxes.
When I hear people in the US complain about rising grocery prices, etc., I have to just zip my lips because they don't realize that it is not a US thing, but a global thing. It is so much more than just who is in the White House, etc.
Instead of getting frustrated about prices where I live, I just have to do the best I can with what I have.
That’s the right perspective in my opinion. I’m the same. I’m doing fine. If I blow the budget one month, I have to make it up the next so it’s just easier to not blow it, lol. I like to “window shop” on Amazon and put a bunch of stuff in save for later. I rarely pull the trigger on any of it. I use the 72 hour rule at a minimum. And, if I leave it there, I find Amazon will often discount the price to encourage me to buy it, 😂. Sometimes I will, typically I don’t. 🤷🏼♀️
Here in Las Vegas gas is near $4 a gal. Car insurance rates are sky high. I am 65 with no accidents and work from home ( low mileage) I pay $135 mo. I recently shopped around and this is cheapest. I shutter to think what teen rates are. Don't get me started on grocery costs... Lol

The only craving I got while pregnant was for Cinnabon, which I couldn't have because I was stuck in the hospital for 6 weeks and had gestational diabetes on top of it. As soon as I was out I made my husband drive me to the mall to pick some up and they were just as good as you described.
Just as a comparison... suburban city of Atlanta, two cars (2005 & 2013 Scions), retired, maybe drive 1000 miles a month and no tickets or wreck; I pay $270 per month.
That is for sure an advantage of living in a small town! Cheaper driving insurance!

Same on the movie theater. The last movie I saw in a theater was Avitar… the first one. I bike or walk to both of my jobs and when I have volunteer work. Usually fill the tank in my pickup 1-2 times a month, depending on how many trips I make into “the city”( Great Falls, Mt) for groceries, dr appointments, sporting events, or girls get togethers.
Gas prices here are $4.06 for regular unleaded at Costco which is the best price around.
Cinnabon sounds amazing. I haven't had one in over 10 years. I get claustrophobic in malls so I tend to avoid them. I've been doing the sugar free lifestyle in 2024 to help reset my body/diet but plan to let myself have a splurge or cheat weekend before I switch over to a paleo diet in April. This might make the list

Fuel (gas) is $135 to fill up in N.Z at the mo. We have chickens but if we brought 5 doz eggs it would be $50!

It's SO TRUE. Between that, insurance, and utilities, it still costs almost $700 a month just to live in the house with no "house payments". Crazy

Gas 2.89-3.00 in Austin
I just paid 3.69 in southwest Florida.
They have a 14 gallon tank and it cost $42 to fill it up. If I go to Sam’s Club it’s about $36. So if I’m on that side of town and I’m not rushed for time I just fill up at Sam’s. I probably could save more money if I didn’t make the weekly $20 Fill up at Circle K. But they give you $.25 a gallon $20 equals 7 gallons of gas. So it’s cheaper at Sam’s, but Sam’s is on the other side of the city. I do go to Sam’s usually every other month to pick up on a few things. This month I need to go to stock up on vinegar. Good old fashion distilled white vinegar, I not only use it in cooking I also use it in cleaning. I use my last bottle so I was going to pick up a gallon at Walmart. The gallon stayed at Walmart. I’m going to drive over to Sam’s Club tomorrow and get 2 gallons for the cost of 1 at Walmart!. I agree with you it is very dangerous to let your gas go below a third of a tank. You never know where you might and you might have to go someplace in an emergency. And there’s only two all night gas stations in Las Cruces the second largest city in the Mexico. I think that’s a good thing cuts down on crime.
I watched this video as I was coming back from our desert trip to the Sahara. My family and I take as many vacations as we can. I want my kids to be expert travelers and look back and have fond memories even if they might not appreciate it right now.

We almost always go to Sam’s for gas. This week it has jumped to $3.14 per gallon! Shock! It was under $3 for a long time. I don’t pay for streaming services either but we have Amazon Prime. Using an antenna for local channels. We don’t watch much anyway.
Gas is 4-5$ here in Portland. Costs $40 or more to fill my Miata once a week. Filling a truck is closer to $70 if not more
Our gas is averaging $5.56/gallon (USD) right now. Which is $2.00/L (CAD) in Canada right now.
Today's rate in Toronto are was 1.49 per liter and has been around that and lower in the last year or so, maybe you're in BC

I worked at a Cinamon roll bakery. Great job. Smelled delicious at the end of every shift. Got paid to make cinnamon rolls! (Except we had two fro yo machines and that was A Process to clean every night. 👎) It's the happiest kind of customer service.

Streaming services will kill you, I got rid of mine except Prime. I stock-piled canned goods and dried beans last Summer when they were on sale, as I knew I might be getting laid off. We spend 40.00 a week on groceries (we don't eat meat or dairy.)
