      That's what's up retro wolf 88. And I would like to say I appreciate you upfront boldness and it's going ahead speaking your mind and telling us where it's at right now in this video. I like to collect everything I can get my hands on I don't really care if it's complete or not as long as I have it and I can preserve the preservation of it myself!! That's where I'm at my mind mentally right now but that's just me. We're on different places in our life... And yeah I enjoyed watching this video thoroughly TOO!!!🤓🤓🧐

    Every game I go after has to be one I actually enjoy, if I can't see myself enjoying it I won't obtain it. I do go for full sets of genres or themes, like all 12 original Xbox "Star Wars" games or all 5 "007 Bond" games for the series. Life is too short at my age of 60, I have to be realistic with my game collecting goals my friend.

    I have a passion for games from Magnavox to PS5. I'll buy anything if it's a) cheap enough, b) in good condition, c) how complete it is & lastly d) how valuable it is. Never pass up a good deal. Use it as trade/barter. I don't buy, "just to buy". There's a method to my madness!😉

      I collect because I enjoy the hobby and the games. I only started collecting in March of 2021 and will never go for a full set of anything. I mostly go for n64, gamecube, and switch games but will buy basically anything that has a blockbuster rental case or "property of blockbuster" sticker.

    Definitely going through the same thing. I have too much stuff. I can’t even display everything that I do love. N64 is not a console I have many memories with actually and I’m asking why do I have these sports games I’ll never touch on it? I have gone back to play some of the games I missed because I was a PlayStation guy at that time. I just don’t need these games taking up space from the games I do love. The process has already begun with the ps2 and Xbox stuff. I’m just unloading low dollar items in mass at game stores to buy things I do want. I found if I trade in 30 games to get something I want to play I feel darn good about it. No money out of my pocket and I free up space!

  • @thecurmudgeon7350
    @thecurmudgeon7350 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Don't understand why people collect full sets anyway. The majority of a console's library is pure garbage, extremely mediocore or don't hold up too well.
    I'm a big fan of watching game room tours. Whenever I see someone mentioning how they have a complete set of this or that console or they are going for one I just roll my eyes and click off the video. The thing that gets on my nerves the most are people flexing expensive games that aren't really that good like Rule of Rose or Kuon for PS2. Extreme collecting always seemed like a waste of money, time and space to me.

  • @vinylreckoning
    @vinylreckoning ปีที่แล้ว +7

    We’ve been doing exactly this with our Collection. Selling off 15 records to get the 2 grails we have always wanted. It just makes sense… quality over quantity

  • @scramblesthedeathdealer
    @scramblesthedeathdealer ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Dude, I have so many games I don't play. Wii shovelware I picked up just because it was cheap, terrible NES games, I don't know... around the time I got an NES Everdrive, I finally stopped obsessively buying video game stuff and got into collecting guitar pedals, then guitars... now I have shelves full of video games with guitar pedals in front of them. 😅
    I may purge some of my games one day, but the thought of selling them individually sounds like a pain, and I don't want to take them to the local game store and get next to nothing. 🤷‍♂️

  • @SaturdayMorningGamer
    @SaturdayMorningGamer ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yeah dude. I feel this with my Wii U complete set collecting. While I also struggle with space, it the collecting budget that really suffers... Im continually asking myself whether it's worth spending money on a Monster High game for the Wii U just to work towards a complete set when Id rather have the cash for another N64 game for that set (which Im WAY more nostalgic for). It doesnt feel nearly as bad buying shovelware or sports games for the N64 because I love that console.

  • @leeokami1021
    @leeokami1021 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I learned a long time ago I only collect games I actually want to play. Complete sets just seems like something to brag about. And a lot of collectors have passed the line of collector to hoarder.
    If I don't want to play it I don't buy it, and I always go for the "best" version of a game so I can get the best out of my games (Xbox and GC at 480p) and if a game is over $100 not in my collection im not opposed to emulating. Obviously I have some grails but I never want to end up with more games then time to play them

    Phenomenal messaging and video man. Very well said, and a great way to highlight that we should be collecting things we actually want to collect, or have a fondness for. Definitely a video every retro collector needs to listen in on.
    So the GameCube I’m collecting for because it’s the console that meant an insane amount to me. But have been starting to pair down my collection of other consoles that just either aren’t that valuable to me anymore. I think I’m approaching 3.0 👍. Phenomenal video again man!

    Great video brotha. Agreed on pretty much everything. HAA. I’m at 3.0 in my collection right now. Just didn’t have the passion for all the crap I had. That’s why I decided to lessen the game collection and expend my movie/music section of my game room because I am/always been so passionate about movies and music, so decided to expand that part and always LOVE when I walk into the garage and see all the music and movies, memorabilia , etc.

    You should enjoy what you collect. Not necessarily to complete a set. When I see John Hancock outrageous collection in the garage and his completed series. I don't want to go that route. So I set myself to collect the best and unique games for each system. If I ever finish a set, I fail. Why? Because all systems have shovelwares. That's over 60-70% of that system. That leaves us with 20% are great games and 10% with unique games.
    I might offend you on this one. It's regarding N64. This system I have boycott because I didn't like the price tag of the n64 games. I was also into rpg and n64 didn't offer me. I did not like the controller. Half of the n64 is sports title. I'm not a fan of sports game. There are a few sport games I like. Ice hockey, Tecmo bowl and Dodgeball on nes, NBA jam on Snes, and Blitz on ps1. Only a few years ago did I purchase an N64 bundle, an Everdrive and a Brawls controller (I don't like the n64 controller). If I like the game on n64, I would buy just that game physically. That's where you come in because you have extensive knowledge of n64 libraries. You could do a video about hidden N64 games people should play. I would be interested in seeing that.

    My husband and I went thru this waaay back with Star Wars action figures in the 90's. It was a way for my husband to reclaim his small collection from childhood and for me to have a collection to begin with (my family was absolutely against girls playing with stuff boys play with. Not lady like..tisk tisk). We started getting the original characters, worked our way into the ships..then we got what wanted and then went nuts. We started getting stuff we didn't really care about because it looked cool..and then it started to dominate our shelves. Eventually, after the thrill of getting the stuff had died, we ended up sadly getting rid of the full collection with the exception of a 1st run Darth Maul.
    Current star wars collection is now stuff I truly care about and its rather eclectic...ranging from replica light sabers, funko, plushies, art books, and action figures that I actually want...not just to have every character and sub character there ever thought to be. Having learned this lesson ages ago..I approach my game collection the same way..its things I am passionate about...things I want to play or things our family wants to play (my boy LOVES Sonic). Also, living in such a small house helps me keep my sanity (lol kind of. I'm thinking we need a Riff shed).
    Excellent topic! I think we've all been there before.

      I love how you have gone through this with the Star Wars collection. Always great to see you in the comments!

    Tom here--I've often thought of scaling back the collection of stuff I don't necessarily care for, same as you, but the wife won't let me. My wife will NOT let me get rid of video games. We're actually working on turning a spare bedroom into an overflow library with the main game room being the "showcase" area. So, I guess I'm collecting what/the way I do because...it makes the wife happy and happy wife..., all that jazz?

    I once thought about collecting all the official NES games, but I changed my mind because I don't play every genre and there are also bad expensive games. I don't see a reason to pay $100 for Wayne's World. LOL. But I will probably still collect hundreds of games.

  • @ranger64gmfr
    @ranger64gmfr ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m slowly starting to downsize my collection, as I had too many systems I wasn’t playing as well as games I wasn’t playing. I bought a bunch of the NES classic games for the Gameboy advanced, I think I played them once and that was it. So, I traded them into the game store. In fact, I’m in the process of getting the boxed games of the games I currently have for the NES. If I can get them cheaply that is. I figured it’ll keep them from getting too dirty with dust/dirt. Just the games I have, I’m not going for a complete set of boxed games, just the games I enjoy playing/have nostalgia for. As I go along, the games I have loose will be traded in towards the purchase of a boxed game. I don’t have a huge collection for each system I have, but really just games I have nostalgia for.

  • @idxman01

    100%, great topic. I’m probably in the 1.5 collector mode and have started to pull back the last 6 months to take a breath, look at the volume and learn from mistakes.
    I got the bug again in 2021, collected a few familiar childhood items then accelerated into Gameboy and 5 other consoles new to me.
    Some verticals started to stand out like pinball, esp Gameboy pinball, though I didn’t go down the rabbit hole. I got hyped on an odd Japanese-only release that was kind of a dumb game along with another dud title. Had to step back and ask wtf.
    So for me I’ll look for unique titles I like along with carts with particularly cool artwork.
    I also started rolling too fast with more gamecube discs until I got Swiss running to at least demo games.

    The "why" is something that creeps into every collectors mind. I've curated what I collect ONLY because I don't have a lot of space. To be fair, I took over one of my mother's basement bedrooms and turned that into a game room, as well. This includes multiple CRT's I've "refurbished"...another "why" moment! I am liking Switch collecting, atm, because it barely takes up any room 😂

    It’s the same way for music I wanna collect all the band discography but then later down the line you honestly don’t need to at all. Just get what albums you really love. I just stop going for that and buy what I like and not worry bout omg I gotta get everything from this band. Same with video games I only buy what I like or I grew up with and not care or waste anymore money on other things I know I have no attachment with.

    Yes collecting should be about a curated games collection tailored to you.

    I collect for the stories.
    Everything in my collection is either something I had as a kid, wanted as a kid, or is a gift from a friend. So every item tells a story.
    I think this is the way to collect so that each time you physically handle one of the games there's a solid memory attached and not just a "oh I got that in a bundle deal" kind of memory.

    I’m beginning the collection 3.0 phase now. I’m only going for titles or series I love or have wanted to play. If I buy a game and don’t like it, I get one I will. I also don’t have a ton of room for my collection so I’ve been really picky about what I’m buying. That’s why I haven’t went into getting my MOTU and TMNT collections started.

    Loved this video. I collect in kind of a 2.5 phase. 95% of my collection means something to me. And the other 5% is mostly a collection I’m going for that not all the games are all that. I am actually working on the same GC subset and love the hunt, but I do like most of the games as well. Also going for a complete Sega CD collection. For me though both of these collections mean something even though all the games in said collections may not. The Sega CD might me my favorite console ever as silly as that sounds so there’s just always been something in me that wanted to have all the games. For the GameCube it’s the FOMO. I never had or played one growing up and as an adult have decided I want to play all the games I never could on other consoles. Some games are admittedly not so great, but I like it because it’s an experience you can only have in one place.

I had doubles and triples on multiple consoles and games I don’t think I’d ever play so I think I parted out almost 500 games lol. I by bundles like the most of us and kept what I didn’t have and sold the rest but I was keeping everything I didn’t have lol. Made no sense but hard to come to that conclusion when you look at it and say but I’ve made my money back so there free games I’ll keep them. 🤘🍻🤘

    Maybe you should start off by storing the games out of sight so you know that you can live without them.

    Love this idea! I did this as in recent months. I have a full set of wii u north american release and it was a blast to collect over the last few years or so (probably close to 4 years now). I also am collecting every star wars and harry potter games. As for a another full set I'm going with a full psp set north american release
    As of now I went back into the collection and if I didn't play or enjoy the game I would sell them. I ended up stop trying to collect every star wars game and if they have a version on the switch I would end up buying that copy and selling the old one. As for the Harry Potter the books and movies had such a profound impact on my life that I will charish those until the end or if I financially need too. (Alsp not that many HP helps too). Also the HP games are all different and it fun to go back and see how horrible some are.
    As for the psp collection I never had a psp as a kid and I always wanted one. I would play my friends one at school and dreamt that one day I could afford it. Well during covids first lock down I started to tinker with broken psp to see if I could fix them and to report back I have a fixed a handful of them and even sold a few. That jumped started the psp collection and I use those funds to buy the psp games.

    It should always be measured in how much passion you have for the things you collect. Not just some automated accumulation because a spreadsheet tells you it's part of a set. I get why people full set collect but it's never held longterm appeal. That high wears out real quick.

    Great advice you shared in this video Pacmancase, I like how you broke collecting down. As for me I feel like I'm past 1.0 but stuck between 2.0 and 3.0. I've calmed down on getting games that I have a slight interest in and even decided to trade away some of the fluff in my Switch collection to collect games that I know I'd love that I didn't get to really experience before. It's always changing with me but it's a comfortable place right now where I'm not collecting absolutely everything that I don't honestly need.

    It's bizar but this is how my mind always have worked. I just can't collect for things that i never had anything with. I have 0% fond memories for the XBOX. Never been an XBOX guy. So it doesn't really make sense for me to collect. However, my friend has switched from PlayStation to XBOX and he has been collecting a series bit of stuff (especially guitar hero.) He even had a spare (and mint condition) XBOX 360 and gave it to me. So i'm displaying it of course, because it came from my friend, so that is special to me. For me, it's more the SNES, GameBoy Color, SEGA MasterSystem and PlayStation consoles and games that i like to collect. Just got my second PS3 system delivered. Still need a slim though. I won't be getting the PS3 super slim, (i really don't like that version.) I'm going to get a mint condition PS2 soon as well for €60, (about the same in $.) So i'm starting to get somewhere.
    Anyway, if you are a collector, i would go with a collection that indeed really mean something to you. And don't get games you don't like or wouldn't ever play. For example, i don't like any sport/fps games. So soccer games like FIFA, or fps games like COD/Killzone, i won't ever collect.
    Though TOMBA (TOMBI in Europe) or Heart Of Darkness for the PS1 are really good games that i like to collect for the PS1 (but they are expensive!) 😩

    Another thing I should add is that people should buy what they want/have nostalgia for. I bought both the PS5 and the Xbox Series S because everyone was buying them and I felt I needed to follow the trend. If I’m being honest, I’m really not in love with either system, the PS5 is great, but the design is lackluster, I prefer the PS4 design if I’m being honest. As far as the Series S goes, great little system, but I don’t have any love for it. If I could turn back time, I’d stop myself from purchasing either system. I might get flack for that comment, but I don’t care.

  • @monkeycrow84
    @monkeycrow84 ปีที่แล้ว

    I collect ps1, ps2, ps4, gba and switch. Those are the systems I have nostalgia for (ps1, ps2) or have great libraries of games I enjoy (ps4, gba, switch). I only get games I know I'll like, and with anything retro I look up gameplay before adding it to my want list. I like rpgs and metroidvania and pixel art style games. Not interested in horror or first person type games. And once a year I have a purge and sell/trade off any games I've picked up that I didn't like after giving it a go or have sat on the shelf not played for way too long, of course there are exceptions. If they are low value I trade them in and put it toward an expensive, usually retro game I don't want to pay straight cash for. Last year I could of knocked off a heavy hitter ps1 game I wanted but needed a new phone so my aim is to get it this year by trading in finds from this summers carboots. The hunt is the fun part for me and getting a bargain. I rarely buy new, although this year I have 2 switch games I plan on buying day one when they release, suikoden 1 and 2 remaster and sea of stars. Everything else I can wait tillthe price drops

    I have been 3.0 from the jump. I just don’t have the space, the time, or the money to collect a bunch of games that are just going to sit on a shelf. Even if I pick up a game that is highly touted, but I don’t personally get any enjoyment out of, I won’t hesitate to sell it or trade it in for something else. That said, I still have way too many games 😅
