The advice of late Dr. Charles Stanley is what got me back into journaling. He would always remind people to write down all the small miracles or answers to your prayers that happen so that you could remind yourself of the good things and encourage yourself when times get rough. I started noticing much more miracles and serendipity events in life and find more things to be grateful for! 😊 And it really does lift up the mood and gives me hope when I go back and reflect on the good things that happened.

I’ve been journaling for more than a decade now but lost my old journals so I guess since 2015 counts?
Habit that keeps me journaling is a new pen! Throughout the years, I’ve experimented and collected pens to match my desired aesthetics. It wasn’t until JetPens when I really started spending money on stationery and it’s safe to say that my go to now is 0.4 Sarasa Dry black. My long time pen however, is a Faber Castelle LV5 blue ((:

I was thinking the same thing. It never occurred to me to journal in this fashion but I can see the usefulness of it. It reminds me of Cornell notes or some commonplace notetaking styles I've seen. I do appreciate this setup as I've gone back in my journals (nearly 30 yrs worth 😊) and it would've been nice to have a tag of some sort. I only know the general years or months maybe in which it was written and then skim till I find what I want. This would really help with being able to reflect or review previous memories more quickly. ^-^

I think my biggest tip for journaling is stop sweating it. Even this frugal style of journal shown in the video is eons above anything I ever produced if we talk about aesthetics. My writing style is fast and loose. The reason I write is not to make a beautiful book but to keep my thoughts and experiences.
Another tip in not sweating it is don't feel obligated to explain your absence to your book. If you miss a day or a week or a month, you don't have to make excuses for the missing pages. Just get back at it. I mean if you bail a friend, you may have to come up with an explanation but the book doesn't judge. Feeling obligated to have a good reason for not writing can make it harder to get back on it, so don't do it.
I have been writing a diary for almost 30 years.

I know i shoudknt be giving out tips if I just started journaling but my little tip (that I guess most of u know anyway..) is that DONT worry about making it look good. It’s not like you’re going to show this journal to the world or anything, it’s just your little space to write down what thoughts and feelings you were having in the day to clear up overthinking. Nobody is going to see it, and nobody has to see it.

The paper's texture is one reason I love writing with a fountain pen, as the scraping sound (within limits, obviously) it creates feels relaxing. I don't use the most recommended paper brands for fountain pens because I write too much each day for it to be cost-effective. Instead, I use different affordable brands that I've found working with fountain pens, meaning I get a wide variety of feedback when writing on these papers.
One thing I've learned from this is that the fountain pen itself also matters. I have some cheaper STYB fountain pens (bought for taking notes on travels without the fear of losing my more beloved pens) that feel a lot scratchier on some papers despite having a broader, medium nib than my Lamy's with a fine nib. But this complexity between paper, pens, and ink is why fountain pens are so enjoyable, no matter what you use them for.

I keep multiple journals-- a 5-year "one line a day" journal, where I write sometimes mundane details about my day, a commonplace book where I write down books I want to read, movies to watch, lines of poems that I like, interesting facts, etc., a nature journal for remembering the funny (and sometimes sad) things I've seen wildlife around my house do, a garden journal to help refine my vegetable/wildflower gardens, a gratitude journal, etc. The only one I write in daily is my one line a day journal, and the others are for whenever the need arises, or when I feel like it. I would be lost without my journals.

I've been journaling everyday since early March 2020, right before the COVID lockdown hit America. It began with a sentence for every day for two years, then when I got a Hobonichi A6 it naturally lengthened to a paragraph 😅. My aim is to write something positive about each day because my mental health often leads me towards depression. Journaling the good stuff has really improved my life, and I truly enjoy looking back. Although I do know a short entry generally means it was a bad day, however it could've been from years ago so I do not remember what was so bad anymore! Really gives perspective

Great video, videographer-san! Like yours, my journal is a hodgepodge of just about everything. My main tip is that there is no wrong way to write (or draw) it. (Someone asked me, years ago, "You mean, you can write dialogue in your journal?" Sure, you can!) I have kept mine for 50+ years now. For a few years, I had switched to keeping one only electronically, but then returned to writing in longhand; my notebook travels everywhere with me. (Decades ago, I was writing outdoors in a public space and heard a woman nearby say, "Ooh, is she writing about ME?" And I thought: I am now!) I've written in planes, trains, automobiles, boats, waiting rooms, shopping lines, etc. Pre-computer, I had used index cards to categorize content. Then I switched to typing up my handwritten journals on computer so that I could use the search function, and I continue that practice. My journal notes (which I call my "raw data") have yielded stories, poems, artwork, and more. Notebooks have varied over the years, from cheap blank books and pages in 3-ring binders to artist sketchbooks. My current notebook is a large Moleskine sketchbook, but I recently ordered a Leuchtturm1917 120 gsm A5 from JetPens, which is comparable in size. To tell my notebooks apart, especially those with black covers, I write the date range on the spines and front covers with a silver Sharpie. I use fountain pens, which are easier on my carpal tunnel these days. Keep up the great writing, everyone!

I started journaling in a 5-year journal with prompts specifically for parents since at the time I had 2 kids. I love to keep small memories accumulated about them as the years pass (and I've since added another kid). I finished that 5-year journal last year and copied the prompts into a fountain pen friendly Midori 5-year journal to keep it going. I also started a "morning pages" journal recently...it's helped me combine my desire to start a dream journal, but also help get a lot of my thoughts out of my head before I'm starting my day out of bed getting myself and my family ready. I really liked your video. I journal every day too. I think people believe that you have to do something special to be able to write about it in your journal. That could not be farther from the truth. There is beauty in the every day. I write every day about doctor’s appointments, what we are having for dinner, about the weather, what I did that day, what I really liked that day and what I didn’t like. Since I have been writing every day for many years now the words just flow out but when I find the words are not flowing I don’t push myself and find something else to do instead. I never guilt myself into writing. I only do it when I truly feel the need. Naturally throughout the day I gravitate towards my journal. I do take it everywhere I go. I am that one person in the doctor’s office not on my phone!❤

I love watching videos that feature Videographer-san! So soothing and useful and on-point. I'm probably a bit older than Videographer-san and have been journaling off and on since 1977. These days I mostly journal just to watch the ink flow out of the pen. I write about how much sleep I did or didn't get last night, or what I ordered from JetPens that morning. 😉Doesn't matter, it still looks pretty. And I also journal about a question or situation that's vexing me - it's how I think and sort things out.
Videographer-san has inspired me to think about journaling with a pencil! I've always resisted that because pencil is 'ephemeral.' But it's not unless you actively erase it. I have loads of notebooks and paper that will work perfectly well with a pencil and I like writing with pencils almost as much as with fountain pens. Thank you for the inspiration, Videographer-san!

I started journaling about 2 months ago. I actually found it really useful to help me explain things, thoughts and emotions as an autistic, I mainly wrote down what i saw, what i felt, what was thinking about and many similar things. At the beginning I started with short paragraphs to get the feel of it, and when I finally felt comfortable I started lively writing pages about literally anything.
It has taken me years to figure out what was stopping me from journaling and I think that I have finally cracked it. My mind thought that in order to journal you have to write down literally everything that happened each day and only that. Well turns out that that was wrong after all, it was this video along with others that made me realize my mistake. I mean we all start somewhere right? 😅

I love you, videographer san. Would you consider doing a small tutorial of how to doodle people? I can draw but I have a very heavy hand and I find very difficult to draw without some sort of guide (not tracing, but like seeing someone do it or getting instructions - which is kinda dumb, I know) but once I get it, it becomes like second nature and I’m able to ad my own spin on things; I just find it impossible without watching someone do it first so I can figure out how long in need to do a line or how to do something round… my brain is kinda dumb like that 😢 and is a bit frustrating. I can do faux lettering and cursive now because if the tutorials here, but drawing is still a mystery to me. Please help. I don’t want to be a master, I just want to be able to do a quick drawing of me emoting without it looking like a shapeless potato. I just can’t find a jetpens quality (camera close and very patient) turorial . Am I making any sense? 😢

Hi there! People are definitely challenging subjects to draw. Videographer-san and some other team members are trained artists, and they mentioned it takes many hours of looking, sketching, and redoing to make progress. For Videographer-san, her art professor taught her some techniques from the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. She finds that realism helps her to understand shapes better, which then she can simplify into "cuter" forms.
We don't have a lot of art tutorials, but we have plant doodle videos on our channel if you wanted to try them out!

I am one of those people who can't fall asleep because there are too many thoughts crowding our minds; I am a compulsive thinker. But when I can't get to a resolution even after going in circles all day that's when I pick up my notebook and talk to God. Helps with acceptance and moving on.

Thank you for this video. I'm just about to place another order with JetPens. I'm going to look into those Life notebooks. (As if I need another notebook!)

I like to look up prompts when bored - new year prompts, life prompts (like birthdays), reflections, etc

I start my 1st Bullet Journal on 1st of May 2022 (small book for trying) , 2nd Bullet Journal on 1st of July 2022
Mine is Bullet Journal, have mini diary, appointment date and favorite life quotes from anime or movie
Avoid making journal too cute looking or fancy looking for 1st journal, as cute and fancy looking takes time to do, as time flies, may feel lazy and not motivated
I'm using different color of highlighter and pens to decorate my Bullet Journal, sticker used for signifier or marking at important dates or notes
I'm writing my 4th Bullet Journal currently

Hello! Is the smudge-proof lead also left-handed-smudge proof? I love my mechanical pencil but always shade my page in grey clouds from my hand passing over the lines and drawings I make...

I love writing with mechanical pencils but after a few years it fades away so have switched over to ball point pens. Gel pens if there is water smudges even after a few years.

I see that you created a narrow column on each page. What do you use that for? Keywords? Titles? Would love to know more! And thank you for this video!

    Excellent!
As a person who is interested in journaling but does not know what-and how-to write, i follow your videos carefully.
I have a request/suggestion: could you consider making a be video for newbies who are not creative (don't have artistic bent) but want to develop this habit? You could demonstrate some pointers regarding what to write-and more importantly how to addresse the dread that stares at the person when he/she sits down to write?
    Thank you!

After you have journaled for several years, how do you organize your journals? How do you keep them?

    • @JetPens
      @JetPens  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi there! It depends on your personal preference. Videographer-san keeps them on a bookshelf because they fit for now. If her collection got too big, she would consider scanning and shredding them to save space. If there are certain entries she likes more, she would keep that spread!

Obv this doesn't work for everyone, but for the past 5yrs BulletJournaling (the minimalist, "official" way that Ryder Carroll created and shares) has been my saviour in all walks of life when it comes to journaling

Noticed the margins are bigger. What do you write in those?

    • @JetPens
      @JetPens  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Videographer-san uses the margins to write in "headers" for quotes to make it easier to skim. Sometimes she goes back into her journals and adds in more reflections months or a years later!

Request that you have over-dubbing or bigger captions. I have a hard time reading these on my phone.

Hi there! Thanks for letting us know. We added captions in TH-cam, which you can access by clicking the CC button in the video. If you go to the Settings button next to it, you can click on Subtitles/CC then Options to change the style of the captions to your liking!

Hi there! You might find the previous journaling video helpful. Connie is left-handed and uses mostly fountain pens to write with!
